Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers already within Metro Manila, reaching Bay Area Suites Manila is straightforward. Depending on your starting point, you can utilize the LRT/MRT system, buses, jeepneys, or taxis and ride-sharing services. For instance, if you are coming from Quezon City or Makati, the LRT-1 or LRT-2 lines can connect you to stations near Malate, followed by a short ride.

If you are in areas like Pasay or Parañaque, buses and jeepneys heading towards Lawton or Baclaran often pass through routes accessible to Malate. Taxis and ride-sharing apps offer the most direct but potentially more expensive option, especially during peak hours.

Traveling to Manila from Cebu, the Queen City of the South, is most efficiently done by air. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate numerous daily flights between Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) and Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 20 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on booking time and season, but budget around PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip if booked in advance.

Upon arrival at NAIA, you can take a taxi, airport shuttle, or ride-sharing service to Bay Area Suites Manila, a journey of about 30-60 minutes. For those who prefer to book their travel arrangements in one place, it's convenient to book flight tickets through platforms that offer comprehensive travel solutions.

From Davao City in Mindanao, flying is also the most practical method to reach Manila. Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer direct flights from Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) to NAIA. The flight time is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Similar to the Cebu route, expect to pay anywhere from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip ticket, depending on promotions and how far in advance you book.

Once you land in Manila, the same transport options—taxis, shuttles, or ride-sharing—are available to take you to your accommodation in Malate.

Best Time to Visit Manila

Manila experiences a tropical climate, characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season generally runs from November to April, offering the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity and cooler temperatures, particularly from December to February. This period is considered peak tourist season, meaning attractions might be more crowded, and accommodation prices could be slightly higher.

For Filipino travelers who prefer comfortable weather for sightseeing and outdoor activities, this is the ideal time to visit.

The wet season typically spans from May to October. During these months, expect frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours, and higher humidity levels. While this season might deter some from outdoor activities, it also brings fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for flights and hotels. For budget-conscious travelers or those who don't mind occasional rain showers and prefer a more relaxed pace, the wet season can still be a rewarding time to visit.

It’s also a good period to focus on indoor attractions like museums, galleries, and shopping malls.

Considering both weather and crowd levels, the shoulder months of November and February to April often strike a good balance. You can enjoy relatively good weather with fewer crowds compared to the absolute peak of December and January. For a truly local experience, consider visiting during national holidays or festivals, but be prepared for larger gatherings and potentially altered transport schedules.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila is a culinary playground, and Malate itself offers a diverse range of dining experiences. A dish that is a staple and a source of national pride is Adobo. Whether it's chicken or pork, the savory and slightly tangy flavor derived from soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns is a taste of home for many Filipinos. You can find excellent versions in traditional Filipino restaurants around Malate, often served with steaming white rice.

Look for establishments that have been around for a while, as they often have perfected their family recipes.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, beef, or seafood. The distinct sourness, usually from tamarind, is incredibly comforting and appetite-stimulating. It’s a dish that perfectly complements the local palate and is evidence of the Filipino love for flavorful broths. Many local eateries and carinderias in the Malate area will serve this, offering a hearty and authentic taste.

For those with a sweet tooth or looking for a refreshing treat, Halo-Halo is indispensable. This popular dessert is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a colorful and layered treat that offers a burst of different textures and flavors with every spoonful. You’ll find this readily available in many restaurants and dedicated dessert shops, especially during warmer months.

Don't leave Manila without trying Lechon. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, many restaurants offer Lechon Kawali (crispy fried pork belly) or Lechon Paksiw (pork stewed in its own sauce) as regular menu items. The crispy skin and succulent meat are a culinary delight. For an authentic experience, seek out restaurants known for their Filipino specialties, where you can savor this iconic dish.

Exploring the local food scene is an integral part of any trip to Manila, and these dishes represent just a fraction of the delicious offerings available.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor, a smile, and respectful language go a long way. It's common to use terms like "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority, showing respect. While Manila is generally welcoming, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your belongings secure and be mindful of pickpockets. Avoid displaying expensive items openly.

For safety, it's advisable to stick to well-lit and populated areas, particularly at night. If using public transport, be aware of your fellow passengers. For taxis and ride-sharing services, ensure the driver is legitimate and the meter is used or the fare is agreed upon beforehand. In case of emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your hotel, Bay Area Suites Manila, readily accessible.

To enhance your travel experience in Manila, several apps can be very useful. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are essential for convenient and relatively safe transportation around the city. For navigation, Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around and estimating travel times. Food delivery apps such as GrabFood or Foodpanda can be handy if you prefer to dine in your room after a long day.

Lastly, a currency converter app can be helpful for managing your budget, especially if you plan to shop or dine at various establishments.

The room is clean and contemporary. We can say that it is also sanitized based on our arrival. The food is very pricey and some of their ingredients were already spoiled. We experienced diarrhea right after. The staff was somewhat accommodating but nothing compared to other hotels where they grant most of your requests. It seems like they are underpaid. An employee that is treated well will treat their guests well. The parking is too narrow for maneuvering. Especially if you brought an SUV. Our car experienced a mechanical issue after parking there. Our suggestion is to don’t bring a car if it’s not a sedan, or else you’ll have a hard time parking. Also, available parking slots for hotel guests are at higher floor levels, making it even more difficult since your vehicle will endure a lot of narrow turning radius. I guess the turning radius was not even considered when the building was planned.

We weren't able to experience the swimming pool, hopefully at least there is a notice before we proceed with the reservation "due to pandemic, swimming pool is not available". In other hotels it is available. I hope he even gave a notice :) We also paid 5k for the damage supposedly because the red roses allegedly stayed on the floor. I don't know if you need deep cleaning, but only Domex can be removed :) The room would have been nice, but the service is very unsatisy :)

Service is great. Hotel staff is very helpful. There are some minor problems with the facilities. The first day I checked it, the elevator key card didn't work. There was also one time when they reset the room key card and a guest from the other room is able to open my room using his room's key card. The bathroom ceiling is leaking water. The whole tissue paper roll is wet! Wifi is unstable. I got disconnected often.

How can a hotel have swimming pool and the room is without freezer box? I bought my bottle of water and other drinks before checking in yesterday, but when I enter inside the room, I discovered that there was no freezer box. I was forced to drink my drinks hot.

Bad experience. Wash small towels after washing hands in the sink which is a substitute for tissue (because it is not provided) soiled with coffee liquid. Considered guest negligence. A 350 php fine. And worse I say with a fine of that size I ask for a small towel / handkerchief that they are not pleasing. Suaga material for other guests who will choose this property and take it into consideration 😠👎👎👎

No matter what, the comforter charged me very lightly for 1,500 as if I bought the stain. Swimming pool per pool costs you 200 not included as you check in before 24hrs validity of swimming pool pass and no consideration for children all charge

I forgot my watch then I called their receptionist, but a call center agent answered my phone. After almost an hour, call center called me back and said that the hotel didn't find my watch at my room. So I decided to ride back to hotel and poof! I just found it instantly 😪
