Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers planning a trip to the world-renowned Boracay Island, getting there from major hubs like Manila, Cebu, or Davao is a well-trodden path with several convenient options. The most popular and efficient route from Manila involves flying into either Caticlan Airport (MPH) or Kalibo International Airport (KLO). Flights to Caticlan are generally more expensive but offer a much shorter transfer time to the jetty port. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate frequent flights.

Booking your book flight tickets in advance, especially during promotional periods, can significantly reduce costs, with fares often ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and booking time. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour.

From Kalibo, it's a longer bus or van ride (around 1.5 to 2 hours) to Caticlan Jetty Port, but flights to Kalibo are often cheaper, with fares sometimes as low as PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 round trip.

From Cebu and Davao, direct flights to Caticlan or Kalibo are also available, though perhaps less frequent than from Manila. Again, booking in advance is key to securing favorable prices. If direct flights are not available or are too costly, connecting flights via Manila are a common alternative.

Once you land at either Caticlan or Kalibo, the journey to Boracay Island involves a short tricycle or van ride to the respective jetty port (Caticlan Jetty Port or Tabon Port for Kalibo, though Caticlan is more common), followed by a scenic 15-20 minute boat ride to Boracay's Cagban Port. From Cagban Port, tricycles are readily available to take you to your accommodation, such as Boracay Ocean Club.

For budget-conscious travelers or those who prefer a land-and-sea adventure, bus travel is an option, particularly from Luzon. Buses depart regularly from major terminals in Metro Manila (like Pasay or Cubao) bound for Caticlan. This is a long journey, typically taking 10 to 14 hours, and can be tiring but is significantly cheaper than flying, with bus fares usually ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 one-way.

Some bus companies offer overnight trips, which can help maximize your time on the island. Upon arrival in Caticlan, you'll proceed to the jetty port for the boat transfer to Boracay. Driving your own vehicle is also possible, but it involves a long drive and ferry crossings, making it less practical for most unless part of a larger road trip.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

Boracay Island experiences two main seasons: the dry season (Amihan) and the wet season (Habagat). The dry season typically runs from November to May, characterized by calmer seas, less rainfall, and gentle northeast winds. This period is considered the peak tourist season, especially from December to February when the weather is most idyllic, with sunny skies and comfortable temperatures. For travelers who prioritize perfect beach weather, swimming, and water sports, this is the ideal time to visit.

However, it's also the busiest and most expensive time, with higher hotel rates and more crowds on the beaches.

The wet season, from June to October, is influenced by the southwest monsoon, bringing stronger winds, occasional heavy rainfall, and rougher seas. While this period can see fewer tourists and potentially lower prices for accommodation and flights, the weather can be unpredictable. However, it's not all rain; there are often sunny spells interspersed with showers.

For travelers looking for a more laid-back atmosphere, fewer crowds, and potentially better deals, the shoulder months of the dry season (November and May) or the early part of the wet season can offer a good balance. The months of June to September are generally considered the off-peak season, offering a more tranquil experience for those who don't mind the possibility of occasional rain.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Boracay Island, while famous for its beaches, also offers a delightful culinary scene that appeals to the Filipino palate. One dish you absolutely must try is fresh seafood, prepared grilled or steamed, often caught daily from the surrounding waters. Many restaurants along White Beach offer a "paluto" style where you can select your seafood and have it cooked to your preference. Look for stalls near D'Mall or Station 3 for a wide selection.

The simplicity of preparation often highlights the natural sweetness and freshness of the catch, a true taste of the ocean.

Another local favorite that resonates with Filipino tastes is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. The tangy, slightly spicy, and refreshing flavors make it a perfect appetizer, especially in the tropical heat. You'll find excellent Kinilaw in many local eateries and even some higher-end restaurants, each with their own subtle variations.

It’s a dish that embodies the fresh, zesty flavors that many Filipinos love.

For those craving something hearty, try the Crispy Pata. While not exclusive to Boracay, a well-prepared Crispy Pata is always a welcome sight for Filipino travelers. This dish features deep-fried pork knuckle, resulting in incredibly tender meat inside and a satisfyingly crunchy skin outside. Served with a soy-vinegar dipping sauce, it's a dish meant for sharing and pairs perfectly with a cold local beer. Many restaurants on the island offer this popular Filipino comfort food.

Don't leave Boracay without trying Halo-Halo, the ultimate Filipino dessert. This iconic treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream, layered in a tall glass. The name itself means "mix-mix," and you're encouraged to stir everything together to enjoy the symphony of textures and flavors. It's the perfect way to cool down and satisfy your sweet tooth after a day under the sun.

You can find Halo-Halo everywhere, from street vendors to cafes.

Finally, explore the local fruit shakes. Boracay is famous for its incredibly fresh and diverse fruit shakes, made with locally sourced fruits like mango, banana, pineapple, and passion fruit. For a unique twist, try the buko (young coconut) shake, which is incredibly refreshing and hydrating. These shakes are readily available from numerous stalls along the beach and are an affordable and delicious way to enjoy the island's bounty.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

Boracay Island, while a tourist hotspot, retains a distinct local culture shaped by its fishing village roots and the influx of visitors. Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and this is very much present in Boracay. A simple "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way in fostering positive interactions.

Respect local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites like Iglesia Ni Cristo - Lokal ng Boracay, and be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas. The island has implemented environmental regulations, so it's important to dispose of trash properly and avoid single-use plastics.

Safety is generally high in Boracay, but as with any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like D'Mall or along White Beach at night. It's advisable to use official tricycles for transportation and agree on the fare beforehand if a meter isn't used. For swimming, pay attention to flag warnings on the beach, as currents can sometimes be strong.

In case of emergencies, the local police can be reached at [insert local emergency number if available, otherwise omit or state general advice]. It's also a good idea to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies.

For a smoother trip, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigating the island, finding attractions, and estimating distances. Ride-hailing apps are not prevalent in Boracay; instead, rely on the local tricycle system. However, apps for booking flights and hotels, such as Traveloka, are crucial for managing your travel arrangements efficiently. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used.

Having these tools at your fingertips will enhance your experience and help you make the most of your Boracay adventure.

Overall stay was great. Food selection was good, but could be better especially the breakfast, very limited choice. Also the service could be a lot better, they were not prompt when it comes to their welcome drinks.

We had a great stay at this hotel. Food was ok, but the service was great. We love the location as we can take a trike to the small and walk back along the beach. It’s at the end of all the entertainment and shopping so it’s peaceful in front for relaxation on the beach. Our only issue was with the AC in our room but they did a good job of fixing it daily in a timely manner. The rooftop is the best thing in the area. Great sunset views and great pool. For a cheaper option you can stay just a bit away and pay for a day pass for the rooftop pool.

This was a great little resort right on White Beach. They had an acceptable breakfast buffet with the water kettle and coffee in the room and a very nice bar that opened up onto the beach. The bed was extremely comfortable and the air conditioning was good. The shower was nice, however the water pressure was quite lacking.

There are only a few things we enjoyed during our stay. The best was the 2.5hr spa treatment! They did a wonderful job and would definitely recommend booking with their spa! We booked an ocean view suite. For the price we paid, we expected better. First off, they will only give one key to our room. This apparently is their standard and will not issue a 2nd key. They only responded with just come to the desk and we will open it for you. So we did this once and no one showed for 30mins. I had to talk to the manager to get it opened immediately. The room was very spacious and had a sitting area and decent terrace. The view was obstructed by coconut trees, so I would say it’s more of a partial ocean view. The room had quite a bit of damage and poor conditions. It rained one evening, in the morning I slipped as a puddle formed under the A/C, which maintenance looked and found that the hole to let the tube in for the A/C to pass through the wall was not filled in. The bathroom had random corners of the wall damaged and black spots along the edges. The toilet did not seem to flush properly every time as we would see presumably back flow before the next use causing the bathroom to have a smell. The phone in our room also would not work. As part of our booking, we did get complimentary buffet tickets. The buffet was decent for being complimentary. I would recommend thinking twice before booking here.

The breakfast is bearly edible, everything is processed or canned. If you need two key cards it is impossible for them to facilitate, not even possible for a fee. Got two queen beds rather than the king bed we booked. The good news is that it's clean.

Water from the rain would entered the room yet it was an expensive room. The breakfast was very basic. for example they didn't have tea/hot water on the breakfast items. No fresh juice. Some of the breakfast food items were cold or finished with 1 hour left before end of breakfast.

Very bad experience staying at this hotel. The room was very old with a noisy aircon. The shower does not have pressure so actually its impossible to have a proper shower. The breakfast buffet is bad and with little options. When something is over they don't refill and when you ask for refill you get an impression that you are bothering them. The Korean woman manager is useless and incapable of the the title. The worst part is that the night shift at the hotel is terrible and rude. They treat Filipino like prostitutes. Make yourself a favor and spend your money in any other same category hotel.

The recent typhoon at no fault of hotel, caused power failures on the island. I arrived to find no power at hotel . They were powering hotel with generators which adequate while working not without issues. I would appreciate that before arriving ,hotel could of notified Hotels.com so that I could make informed decision whether to arrive on an island with intermittent power. As much as I researched conditions online, reality was different than reported . Boracay is a place to be appreciated. I would just try to stay informed of untold events such as major storms.

The view was incredible, I'll give that a 5 on a scale of 1-5. The staff was also incredible. I had a couple of issues # 1 The water pressure in my room was barely there. # 2 Maintenance turn off what little water I had without informing me that made it very uncomfortable when you use the bathroom and have no water to flush the toilet. So needless to say I was without water for a few hours.
