Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

Reaching Puerto Princesa from major hubs like Manila, Cebu, or Davao is primarily achieved through air travel, offering the most efficient route for Filipino travelers. Several local airlines operate regular flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). From Manila, expect flight durations of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares typically ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets.

Airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia are common carriers. Similar flight times and price ranges apply for departures from Cebu and Davao, though direct flights might be less frequent, sometimes requiring a layover in Manila. Booking through Traveloka can help you compare prices and find the best deals.

While flights are the quickest option, bus travel is also available for the more budget-conscious or adventurous traveler, though it involves significantly longer journeys. From Manila, you would typically take a bus to Batangas port, then a ferry to Puerto Princesa. This entire journey can take upwards of 24 hours. Bus operators like Montenegro Lines and San Juanico Tours offer routes. The combined cost of bus and ferry tickets might range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 4,000.

This option is best suited for those who have ample time and wish to experience more of the Philippines' maritime landscape. Driving your own vehicle is also possible but extremely time-consuming, involving multiple ferry crossings and long stretches of road, making it a less practical choice for most visitors.

For those considering a trip to Puerto Princesa, the best time to visit generally falls within the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, ideal for island hopping tours, visiting the Underground River, and enjoying the beaches.

The peak tourist season is typically from December to February and again during the Holy Week in March or April, when crowds are larger and prices for accommodation and flights may be higher. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially lower costs, the shoulder months of November, May, or even the early part of the wet season (June to October) can be appealing, though you should be prepared for occasional rain showers.

The culinary landscape of Puerto Princesa offers a delightful array of flavors that Filipino travelers will surely appreciate. A must-try is the **Kinilaw**, the Filipino version of ceviche. In Palawan, it's often prepared with the freshest catch of the day, marinated in vinegar, ginger, onions, and chili, offering a tangy and refreshing start to any meal. You can find excellent kinilaw in local carinderias and seafood restaurants along the Baywalk.

Another local specialty is **Tamilok**, a type of woodworm harvested from mangrove trees, which is typically eaten raw, dipped in vinegar. While it might sound adventurous, it’s a unique Palawan delicacy with a briny, slightly sweet taste that many visitors find surprisingly palatable.

Seafood is, of course, a star attraction. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are abundant and prepared in various delicious ways. Look for restaurants that offer fresh catches of the day, grilled to perfection. For a taste of something hearty, try **Lumpia Ubod**, a fresh spring roll filled with heart of palm and often served with a savory peanut sauce. While available elsewhere, Palawan’s version often incorporates local ingredients that give it a distinct flavor.

Don't forget to sample local fruits like the sweet and juicy mangoes, or try **Halo-Halo** from a local stall for a refreshing dessert. Many restaurants near Casanas Suites, especially those closer to Robinsons Place Palawan, will offer these local favorites.

When exploring Puerto Princesa, embracing the local culture and staying aware of your surroundings will enhance your experience. Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and a simple smile and polite greeting go a long way. When interacting with locals, using "po" and "opo" shows respect, especially when addressing elders. For safety, Puerto Princesa is generally a safe city, but it's always wise to be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded areas like markets or the Baywalk.

Keep valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items unnecessarily. Emergency numbers for the police are readily available, and local barangay officials can also provide assistance.

For practical purposes during your trip, having a few essential apps on your smartphone can be very helpful. Ride-hailing apps are available for convenient transport within the city, though tricycles are the most common and affordable mode of transport for shorter distances. Navigation apps like Google Maps are invaluable for finding your way around and locating restaurants or attractions. Communication apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are useful for staying in touch.

Additionally, having the Traveloka app on your phone is essential for managing your bookings, checking flight statuses, and discovering local activities and dining options.

At Casanas Suites, the standard check-in time begins at 14:00 and extends until 12:30 the following day, which is a rather generous window for guests. This timing is standard across most hotels and allows the housekeeping team sufficient time to prepare the rooms for incoming guests. If your flight or onward journey is scheduled for later in the afternoon or evening, you can again utilize the hotel's luggage storage facility. This service ensures your belongings are safe while you continue to enjoy your last day in the city.

I love the homey ambiance & serenity of this place. Our room was at the 3rd floor & there was no elevator, but hotel staff promptly assisted us in bringing our luggage. Room was equipped with mini fridge and clothing rack for hanging your wet clothes. Had complimentary bottled water too. Hope they refilled it daily, though. Bathroom's drainage kinda bit of clogged up since water does not go down the drainage easily. Nonetheless, it's very clean. Free breakfast was good too, despite limited choices available. We requested to have our breakfast packed as we will leave early for our flight, and they gladly accommodated. They even helped us booked a tricycle for our convenience.

Friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms. Breakfast was included. I think it was worth the money.
