Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipinos traveling from Manila to Cebu City, flying is the most efficient option. Numerous airlines operate daily flights between Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect prices to range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip if you plan ahead. Booking your book flight early can lead to substantial savings.

If you prefer land and sea travel, you can take a bus from Manila to a ferry terminal and then board a ship bound for Cebu. This journey is considerably longer, often taking 20 to 36 hours, and involves multiple transfers. Bus fares to the port can range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500, while ferry tickets vary based on the class of service, typically from PHP 1,000 to PHP 3,000. This option is best suited for those who enjoy extended travel and scenic views.

Driving to Cebu from Luzon is also possible, involving a series of ferry crossings. The total travel time can extend to several days. Toll fees along expressways in Luzon and Visayas, combined with ferry costs for your vehicle, will add up. This route is generally chosen by those who prefer the flexibility of having their own vehicle throughout their journey or are undertaking a long road trip across the archipelago.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's warm and humid year-round. The dry season, generally from December to May, is considered the most favorable time for visitors. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, perfect for exploring outdoor attractions and enjoying the city's beaches and islands. Temperatures typically range from 26°C to 32°C.

The wet season runs from June to November, characterized by higher humidity and a greater chance of rain, often in the form of short, intense downpours. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it's wise to pack an umbrella and be prepared for occasional disruptions to outdoor plans. Despite the rain, many indoor attractions and cultural sites remain accessible and enjoyable.

For those looking to experience local festivals, the Sinulog Festival, held every third Sunday of January, is a major draw. This religious and cultural celebration is one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines, attracting massive crowds. If you plan to visit during Sinulog, booking your accommodation and flights well in advance is essential due to high demand.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu is renowned for its culinary scene, offering a delightful array of flavors that reflect its rich heritage. A must-try is Cebu's Lechon, often hailed as the best in the Philippines. Unlike other versions, Cebuano lechon is typically seasoned with herbs and spices like garlic, onion, and lemongrass, resulting in incredibly tender meat and crispy skin. You can find excellent lechon stalls and restaurants throughout the city.

Another local delicacy that captures the essence of Cebuano cuisine is Kinilaw. This dish features raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and zesty appetizer that perfectly complements the tropical climate. Many local eateries and seafood restaurants serve this popular dish.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is a beloved Filipino dessert that Cebu does exceptionally well. This icy concoction is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down after a day of exploring. You'll find various versions of this popular treat in local carinderias and dessert shops.

Don't leave Cebu without trying Dried Mangoes, a popular pasalubong (souvenir) that’s enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. These sweet and chewy mango slices are a taste of Cebu's abundant fruit produce. Many souvenir shops and supermarkets sell these, making them an easy and delicious item to bring home for friends and family.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuanos are known for their hospitality and friendly nature. While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic phrases in Cebuano (Bisaya), such as "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Maayong adlaw" (Good day), can be appreciated. Respect local customs, especially when visiting religious sites, by dressing modestly.

When it comes to safety, Cebu City is generally safe for tourists, but it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid displaying expensive items openly. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of petty theft. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911.

For seamless navigation and communication, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for booking rides and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is invaluable for navigating the city streets and finding directions to attractions. For communication, ensure you have a reliable local SIM card or an international roaming package.

Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may not be fluent in English. Having these digital tools at your disposal will significantly enhance your travel experience, allowing you to explore Cebu City with greater confidence and ease.

I'm sorry but I can't recommend this place. On the plus side they seem kind and have good intentions. I can feel how the staff wants the guest to feel as good as possible and for this, in grateful. But good intentions are not enough as almost everything is broken or inadequate. Bathroom cleaned once per week. Sheets changed once per week. You have hot water but it's either cold or very hot. The Internet is a joke most of the time and I spend about 600 PHP using my phone as a hotspot instead. Then you have the location. Sure, it's nice and romantic until you get hungry or you need something and then you realize how far away you are. And since jeepney are not always available or viable, you'll have to take a taxi. So if you go downtown and back, you'll pay 10 extra USD just on transportation. The food is not good. First evening I ordered a burger. I think it was microwaved. This was at the same price as a fresh burger in the mall. The food is not that bad but it's at least twice more expensive than it should be. And this can be told about everything. All are sold twice price and since you're far away from a store, you'll have to buy, eventually. For me, it was not worth it and my stay there was borderline depressing. It would have been cheaper to pay three times more and rent a nice place than to stay there. And while I appreciate the willingness to accommodate my requests, at the end of the day, almost everything is broken, most are mismanaged and you need a lot of patience. So unless you are really trying to save money, pay more and find something better. Even for the service level in the Philippines which is generally very bad, this place is disappointing. On the plus side, the beds are comfortable and interesting, made out of bamboo. The air con works (well, at least in my room). There are no strange smells and I haven't found any bugs. When the internet works, it is decent. You get free water and you can do laundry (although how the same load is one day 2 kg and another 3, I don't know). It's also quite secure with a gate and lockers, although being your own lock. The towels were clean and the sheets too, minus a huge burn hole in one of them. So there are many pluses but again, for me it's more hassle than it is worth. And unless you're really spartan and nothing like this bothers you or you have a lot of time to spend going back and fourth in jeepneys (which tend to get very overcrowded), you'll feel the same.

Overall is good. I stayed for 7 nights. But it will be better if the bathroom get cleaning service on routine. At least once every 2 or 3 days. Because it's easy to slip

They could have provided a lock for their lockers but none was given to me.

Staff were really helpful and accomodating. But the place was easy to miss. We had a fairly gard time looking for it.
