As part of my layover in Manila, I chose this hotel, mainly based on price and location. I must say that City State Tower Hotel met the grade on both of these. Although it is somewhat dated, the hotel has very adequate facilities with a very helpful and friendly staff. There are many stores, restaurants and other places of interest very close by, including Robinson, which has a huge supermarket and department store. The room had a comfortable bed, a very good air conditioner and good sink and shower with warm water. There is even a water kettle for coffee or tea. So overall, very satisfied and I definitely would stay there again in the future.

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers already within Metro Manila, reaching Citystate Tower Hotel in Ermita is straightforward. Numerous public transportation options are available. Jeepneys and buses traverse the city, with many routes passing through or near the Ermita district. For instance, if you are coming from Quezon City or Makati, you can find bus or jeepney routes that will take you close to A. Mabini Street.

The fare for these options typically ranges from PHP 15 to PHP 30, depending on the distance. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also readily available, offering a more direct but slightly more expensive journey, usually costing between PHP 150 to PHP 300 depending on your starting point and traffic.

If you are traveling from the Visayas, such as Cebu, the most efficient way to reach Manila is by air. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. Flight durations are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on booking time and season, but typically range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip if booked in advance.

Once you land at NAIA, you can take a taxi or ride-sharing service directly to Citystate Tower Hotel, a journey of about 30-60 minutes costing PHP 300-500. To secure the best prices, it's highly recommended to book flight tickets well in advance.

For those coming from Mindanao, particularly Davao City, flying is also the most practical option. Flights from Francisco Bangoy International Airport (Davao) to NAIA are available daily, with a flight time of around 2 hours. Similar to travel from Cebu, expect fares to range from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip, depending on booking conditions. Upon arrival in Manila, taxis and ride-sharing services are available to take you to the hotel.

Alternatively, for a more budget-conscious option from Luzon's northern regions or even from as far as Bicol, long-distance bus travel is an option. Major bus terminals in Cubao or Pasay offer routes to Manila. Bus journeys can take anywhere from 8 to 12 hours or more, with ticket prices typically ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500. From the bus terminal, you would then need to take local transport to Ermita.

Best Time to Visit Manila

Manila experiences a tropical climate, characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season generally runs from November to April, offering the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity and comfortable temperatures, typically ranging from 25°C to 32°C. This period, particularly from December to February, is considered the peak tourist season.

It's an ideal time for outdoor activities, visiting historical sites like Intramuros, and enjoying the city's many festivals. However, due to its popularity, expect larger crowds at major attractions and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season in Manila typically spans from May to October. During these months, expect frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours, and higher humidity levels. While this season might deter some travelers, it also presents its own advantages. The crowds are significantly smaller, leading to a more relaxed atmosphere at popular spots and often lower prices for flights and hotels.

For Filipino travelers who prefer a more laid-back experience and are not deterred by occasional rain, the wet season can offer great value. It's also a time when the city's indoor attractions, such as museums and shopping malls, are particularly appealing.

For a balanced experience, the shoulder months of November and April can be excellent choices. These periods often bridge the gap between the dry and wet seasons, offering a mix of good weather with fewer crowds than the absolute peak. If you are looking for a comfortable mid-range stay and want to enjoy Manila's offerings without the peak season rush, consider planning your visit during these transitional months.

Regardless of when you choose to visit, Citystate Tower Hotel provides a reliable base for your Manila adventures.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila's culinary landscape is a reflection of its rich history and diverse influences, offering a gastronomic journey that every Filipino traveler should embark on. A characteristic dish you must try is **Adobo**. While variations exist across the archipelago, Manila offers its own take, often featuring chicken or pork simmered in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. You can find excellent versions in traditional Filipino restaurants and even in some casual eateries around Ermita.

Look for places that serve it with perfectly steamed rice, allowing the savory and tangy sauce to be absorbed.

Another must-try is **Sinigang**, a sour and savory soup that is a comfort food staple for many Filipinos. The sourness typically comes from tamarind, but other fruits like guava or calamansi can also be used. Whether you opt for pork, shrimp, or fish sinigang, the combination of tender meat or seafood and fresh vegetables in a tangy broth is incredibly satisfying. Many local carinderias (small eateries) and restaurants in Manila serve this dish, each with their unique touch.

It’s a dish that truly embodies the Filipino palate's love for complex flavors.

For those with a sweet tooth, **Halo-Halo** is an iconic Filipino dessert that is particularly refreshing in Manila's warm climate. This layered concoction typically includes shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube (purple yam) ice cream. It's a delightful explosion of textures and flavors, and finding the best halo-halo is a popular pastime for locals and tourists alike. Several establishments near Robinsons Place Manila offer their own popular versions.

Don't leave Manila without trying **Lechon**, a whole roasted pig known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat. While lechon is a celebratory dish found throughout the Philippines, Manila offers access to some of the best lechon restaurants. Whether you order a full lechon for a group or a plate of lechon kawali (fried pork belly) or lechon paksiw (pork belly stewed in liver sauce), the rich, savory flavor is unparalleled.

Many restaurants in the city specialize in this beloved dish.

Finally, for a taste of street food culture, explore the offerings of **Isaw** (grilled chicken or pork intestines) and **Kwek-kwek** (deep-fried quail eggs coated in an orange batter). While these might seem adventurous, they are popular snacks enjoyed by many Filipinos. You can often find vendors selling these delights in areas with a lively night scene or near public markets. Enjoying these local street food snacks is an authentic way to experience Manila's vibrant food culture.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Filipinos are generally respectful of elders, so using "po" and "opo" (particles indicating respect) when speaking to older individuals is customary. While Manila is a generally safe city for tourists, it's always wise to exercise caution, especially in crowded areas.

Be aware of your surroundings, keep your valuables secure, and avoid displaying expensive items openly.

When using public transportation like jeepneys or buses, be mindful of your belongings. It's advisable to keep bags in front of you. For taxis and ride-sharing services, ensure the meter is used or agree on a fare beforehand. If you encounter any issues, feel free to approach uniformed personnel or hotel staff for assistance. Emergency numbers to keep in mind include 911 for general emergencies, and specific hotlines for the police or fire department can be found online.

Staying informed about local news and advisories can also be helpful.

To enhance your travel experience in Manila, several apps can be incredibly useful. Grab is essential for booking taxis, ride-sharing cars, and even food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is invaluable for navigation, helping you find your way around the city and estimate travel times. For currency conversion and staying updated on exchange rates, apps like XE Currency can be helpful.

Additionally, a translation app can assist with basic Filipino phrases if needed, though English is widely spoken.

This is a VERY mediocre hotel. Very bad for the price. The mattress was so bad, with springs poking me all night, I almost slept on the floor. The A/C is other off or on full blast, with l levers broken and always facing down at the bed. I spent the night freezing. The shower had hot water, for 2 minutes....

The hotel overal was good the size of the room was big but it did have cockroaches. That being said thats kinda just how most places are in manila. The location is really what i enjoyed the most. Being able to walk to mostly every location with convenience was the best part

The included breakfast is very good. Concierge service to Puerto Galera is good, but very expensive. However; the bed was very hard and springs were hitting me all night, the shower didn't work (no hot water anyway), strict rule of two small bottles of water, very inconvenient placement of outlets and a 1,000 peso deposit even though there is no minibar (what did they think we would steal, the bed?) and the overall feel was very run down.
