Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For many Filipinos, the journey to El Nido begins with a flight from Manila or other major hubs like Cebu or Clark. Several airlines operate flights to El Nido (Lio Airport - ENI) or the larger airport in Puerto Princesa (PPS). Flights to El Nido are generally more convenient, taking about 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares potentially ranging from PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. You can easily book your flight through Traveloka.

Alternatively, flying into Puerto Princesa and then taking a van or bus is a more budget-friendly option. The flight to Puerto Princesa is typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares often starting from PHP 2,500. From Puerto Princesa, vans for El Nido depart frequently and take approximately 5 to 6 hours, costing around PHP 500 to PHP 700 per person. This option requires more travel time but can significantly reduce your transportation costs.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces, a combination of bus and ferry services might be possible, though this is a much longer and more complex journey. Driving your own vehicle is also an option, but it involves a long drive to Puerto Princesa and then onward to El Nido, covering significant distances. The roads are generally paved but can be winding, especially closer to El Nido.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit El Nido for optimal weather conditions. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and lower chances of rainfall, making it ideal for island hopping tours, swimming, and other water activities. The peak tourist season falls between December and April, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights.

The shoulder months, such as November and May, can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially better deals, consider visiting during these periods. The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rain and rougher seas, which can sometimes lead to tour cancellations. However, this period also sees fewer visitors and lower prices, and the landscape appears lusher.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary heritage, and El Nido offers plenty of opportunities to savor local flavors. A must-try is the fresh seafood, often grilled to perfection right on the beach or in local eateries. Look for dishes like *sinigang na hipon* (shrimp in sour broth) or grilled *lapu-lapu* (grouper), which showcase the bounty of the surrounding waters.

Another Filipino favorite you should seek out is *Adobo*, the national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork adobo, the savory and slightly tangy flavor profile is a comforting taste of home, even when you're far away. Many local restaurants in El Nido serve their own versions, each with a unique twist.

Don't leave El Nido without trying *Kinilaw*, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, creating a refreshing and zesty appetizer that perfectly complements the tropical climate. It’s evidence of the Filipino love for fresh ingredients and bold flavors.

For a sweet ending, try *Halo-Halo*, the ultimate Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream is a delightful treat that offers a burst of different textures and flavors in every spoonful.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and El Nido is no exception. A common local custom is the practice of *bayanihan*, a spirit of communal unity and cooperation. While exploring, always be respectful of local traditions and customs. Dress modestly when visiting churches or interacting with elders. Learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Magandang araw" (Good day) can go a long way in fostering positive interactions.

Safety in El Nido is generally good, but like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. It's advisable to use reputable tour operators for island hopping and to always follow the safety instructions provided by your guides. For emergencies, the local police can be reached at [insert local emergency number if available, otherwise omit].

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. To manage your bookings and find local information, the Traveloka app is incredibly useful. Additionally, a currency converter app can be helpful for managing your budget.

Coral Reef has an old fashion safety box with the actual master key in the middle that can be opened without resetting the passcode. My friend’s wallet and mine were missing $100 each. The person was tempting to do it the next night by knocking on our door at 10pm saying ‘ room service’ while we didn’t order anything. I talked to the receptionist and she said she will conduct an investigation but it has been a week and no word from Coral Reef.

The good: Comfortable beds the breakfast was pretty tasty, albeit a bit small selection-wise. The not-so-good: The room was kind of dark and had a bit of a smell that may have come from the water. The water definitely had a smell from time to time. At the time of our stay they were installing a fire alarm system, which is great for future guests, but being in the middle of the installation they had left a hole in the ceiling covered with just a piece of paper that had torn. We suspected that hole and an opening to the side of the wall-mounted air condition unit to let in some mosquitos.

The room is sparse, service at the cafe is horrible - Example: sunny side up comes up hard. Asked for availaility of food for early tour - confirmed ok, but only coffee/tea, no food. Hotel is sub-par

Staff were nice and helpful, conveniently located in el Nido town; walking distance to markets and water activities. Room was ok, located on the 5th floor, so it was a little difficult to walk up and down every day without an elevator. while carrying bags or other things...

The WiFi doesn’t work much in the room. I had ants in the room on the beds. You could get a nice coffee at the cafe but have to pay for real coffee.

Great location, though rather noise given the happenings at nights and busy street in the morning. New hotel.

The staffs were very accommodating, friendly and kind. They helped us organized our El nido tours, canopy walk, van transfers with a discount price. I also love the place because it was only a walk distance to all el nido tours, foods and stores.
