Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common and efficient method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Manila from various provincial capitals. You can often find competitive fares, especially if you book in advance through platforms like Traveloka, where you can book flight tickets. Flight durations vary, but a trip from Cebu to Manila, for instance, is typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

From NAIA, reaching Makati is straightforward. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Grab are readily available at the airport terminals. The journey to Makati typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending heavily on traffic conditions, with fares ranging from PHP 300 to PHP 500. For a more budget-friendly option, you can take an airport bus service that heads towards various points in Metro Manila, from where you can transfer to a jeepney or bus bound for Makati.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces in Luzon, taking a bus is a viable and economical option. Numerous bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from Northern and Southern Luzon. Buses bound for Makati or those passing through its major thoroughfares like Ayala Avenue or Buendia Avenue are frequent. Bus fares are considerably lower than flights, typically ranging from PHP 400 to PHP 800 for longer inter-island routes, and travel times can range from 8 to 12 hours depending on the origin.

Driving to Makati is also an option for those coming from accessible regions in Luzon. Major expressways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) connect to Metro Manila's road network. Navigating within Metro Manila requires familiarity with the city's traffic patterns. Toll fees will apply, varying based on the entry and exit points used.

Best Time to Visit Makati

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Makati is no exception. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the cooler, dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is generally pleasant with lower humidity and less frequent rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the city's attractions, shopping, and dining al fresco.

The period between December and February is particularly favored, offering the most comfortable temperatures and sunny skies. However, this is also considered peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodations and flights. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially better deals, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or late April.

The wet season, from May to October, brings higher humidity and more frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy but are often short-lived. While this season might deter some outdoor activities, it offers a different charm, with lush greenery and fewer tourists. Traveling during this time can also be more budget-friendly, as demand is lower.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Makati, and the Philippines in general, offers a culinary landscape that is a delightful fusion of indigenous flavors and international influences. When in Makati, you must try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households and restaurants. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries around Poblacion.

Another dish that showcases Filipino comfort food is Sinigang. This sour and savory soup, often made with tamarind broth, features meat (pork, beef, fish, or shrimp) and a variety of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. Its distinct sourness is incredibly satisfying, especially on a cooler day. Many restaurants near Coro Hotel will offer this hearty soup.

For those seeking something a bit more adventurous, Lechon is a must-try. This whole roasted pig is renowned for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat. While a whole lechon is often for celebrations, many restaurants offer lechon kawali (deep-fried pork belly) or lechon paksiw (lechon simmered in a sauce) as more accessible options.

Don't leave Makati without trying Halo-Halo for dessert. This popular Filipino treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's a refreshing and visually appealing dessert that perfectly caps off any Filipino meal. You'll find many variations in local carinderias and dessert shops.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Makati, a polite demeanor and a friendly smile go a long way. It's customary to show respect to elders, and using terms like "po" and "opo" (yes, sir/ma'am) is a sign of good manners. While Makati is a cosmopolitan city, understanding basic etiquette will enhance your interactions.

Safety in Makati is generally good, especially in well-trafficked areas like the business district and shopping malls. However, like any major city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places, to avoid petty theft. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of unsolicited offers or overly friendly strangers. For emergencies, the local police hotline is 117.

When it comes to essential apps for navigating Makati, Grab is indispensable. It's a super-app for ride-hailing, food delivery, and grocery delivery, making transportation and daily needs much more convenient. Moovit or Google Maps are excellent for public transportation routes and navigation. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by Filipinos.

Consider downloading a currency converter app if you're dealing with foreign exchange, and a translation app can be helpful, though English is widely spoken in Makati. Having these tools readily available on your smartphone will significantly smooth your travel experience, allowing you to focus more on enjoying your stay in this dynamic city.

The hotel is a good value. The biggest issue is the check in and check out process. It takes too long and the process remains below industry standards. Hotel management should look into the process and work to improve. The doorman and concierge staff are great and the room servicing crews are great. It's just front desk process.

Asked the front desk about my laundry to be done after leaving it in the bed in the bag and being left on day one, and was told they took note of it for the next day. Next day comes, left behind yet again after I left a note asking them to please wash, was responded to on previously mentioned note “please inform front desk if you wish to schedule laundry being done”. Also managed to crush a few cockroaches in the hallway during my stay. Side notes if you don’t understand Makati, outside can be rugged and have people asking for money pretty consistently.

Business travelers should avoid. The internet is not stable and, periodically, not available. Was out for over 48 hours during my last visit, periodically out during this one. The staff handling bags and rooms are quite good. The front desk is not. The check-in and check-out procedures are very slow and below standards at most hotels. The property management seems very low key and largely invisible. The should examine improved processes at front desk including check in and check out as well as investing to fix the internet to hotel industry standards. The system dapperly to be a collection of managed hot spot points but it is really hard to tell. I received a 30 minute notice that I had to change rooms for maintenance.

The hotel is a good value. The biggest issue is the check in and check out process. It takes too long and the process remains below industry standards. Hotel management should look into the process and work to improve. The doorman and concierge staff are great and the room servicing crews are great. It's just front desk process.

The staff were friendly and super attentive. Hotel did not disappoint. Clean rooms and good rooftop wrt bar with a variety of options and local pulutan and pupus or tapas.

Room was great. Staff were incredible (short staffed on the one day in the dining room for breakfast). Also could use another coffee machine or two for breakfast.

Room was clean. Staff are very friendly, especially the bus boys. Amenities are not too bad. However, the area is a bit questionable.
