Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular route for many Filipinos seeking a cooler climate. The most common and economical way is by bus. Several bus companies, including Victory Liner and Genesis Transport, operate frequent trips from terminals in Metro Manila (like Cubao and Pasay) to Baguio City. Bus fares typically range from PHP 450 to PHP 800, depending on the bus type (regular or executive) and the season. The journey takes approximately 4 to 6 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

For those who prefer to fly, the nearest major airport is Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga. From Clark, you can take a bus directly to Baguio City, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. Alternatively, you can fly into Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and then take a bus to Baguio. To secure the best prices for your air travel, it is recommended to book flight tickets well in advance, especially during peak seasons.

Driving your own vehicle offers the most flexibility. The primary route from Manila is via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), then continuing onto the TPLEX and MacArthur Highway towards Baguio. Toll fees can add up, so it’s wise to budget for these costs. The scenic drive allows you to appreciate the changing landscapes as you ascend into the Cordillera mountains.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a pleasant, cool climate year-round, making it an attractive destination anytime. However, the dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with cooler temperatures, perfect for outdoor activities and exploring the city. The peak tourist season falls between December and April, especially during the Holy Week and the Panagbenga Festival in February, when the city is most crowded and hotel rates may be higher.

The rainy season, from June to October, brings frequent rainfall, sometimes heavy, which can affect outdoor plans. While the rain can add to the misty, cool ambiance that Baguio is known for, it’s advisable to pack rain gear and be prepared for potential travel disruptions. For travelers seeking a more tranquil experience and lower accommodation prices, visiting during the shoulder months of May or October, or during weekdays in the off-peak season, can offer a good balance.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is a culinary delight, offering a range of flavors that reflect its unique culture and produce. A must-try for any Filipino traveler is the **Strawberry Taho**. This local variation of the classic silken tofu dessert is infused with fresh strawberry syrup, a sweet and refreshing treat that perfectly complements Baguio's cool weather. You'll find vendors selling it in popular spots like Burnham Park.

Another local specialty is **Pinikpikan**, a traditional Cordilleran dish. This unique dish involves a specific preparation method where a chicken is lightly beaten to draw blood, which is then cooked with vegetables like etag (smoked pork) and ginger. The result is a rich, flavorful soup that offers a taste of authentic highland cuisine. Many local eateries and restaurants in Baguio serve this hearty dish.

Don't leave Baguio without trying **Ube Jam** and **Strawberry Jam**. These sweet preserves, made from locally grown ube (purple yam) and strawberries, are perfect souvenirs and delicious spreads for pandesal or toast. You can find high-quality jams at local markets and souvenir shops throughout the city. They capture the essence of Baguio's agricultural bounty in a jar.

For a savory experience, sample **Etag**, the smoked or cured pork that is a staple in Cordilleran cooking. It adds a distinct umami flavor to various dishes, including stews and vegetable preparations. Trying etag is a way to connect with the traditional flavors of the region and understand its culinary heritage.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and generally safe environment, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. The culture here is a blend of indigenous Cordilleran traditions and modern Filipino influences. When interacting with locals, politeness and respect are always appreciated. Learning a few basic phrases in Ilocano or Kankanaey can be a nice gesture, though English and Tagalog are widely understood.

For safety, it's recommended to keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas like markets and terminals. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, particularly at night. If you encounter any issues, the local police can be reached at their emergency hotline. It’s also a good idea to have the contact numbers of your hotel and any local friends or acquaintances readily available.

When it comes to essential apps for your trip, consider downloading **Google Maps** for navigation, as it will help you find your way around the city and locate attractions. **Grab** is useful for booking rides if you prefer not to use taxis or public transport, though taxis are readily available and generally affordable. For real-time weather updates, especially during the rainy season, a reliable weather app can be very helpful.

Finally, consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who might speak regional dialects. While English is common, having a translation tool can bridge any communication gaps and enhance your cultural exchanges. These tools can make your travel experience smoother and more enriching.

It was a beautiful hotel, yet the service was dreadful. It was Christmas eve when we booked a room and we haven't eaten anything yet. Luckily they had their own on demand food service. Ordered food at 6pm, it's 9pm and still no food served to the room. Left us searching restaurants in the middle of the night outside the hotel. And given that it was Christmas eve, most chains and restaurants were closing early. Also they said they had fiber internet, we can't even connect to the goddamn internet. We had to call the concierge multiple times which always replied "we'll reset it and then connect after a couple minutes". Guess what, still can't connect. And the morning breakfast? They had a buffet, sure. But they lacked variety and the food was bad, sunny side-ups were drenched in oil, no deserts, etc. Really wouldn't recommend staying here, you'll be better off booking a transient.

Bad service and housekeeping. The hotel looks good outside. The rooms are big and the bed are comfortable. But the bathroom is not so clean and was not cleaned on our second day stay. No new towels and toiletries, too. But they replaced us with a new roll of tissue and the trash was brought down. The coffee and the bottles of water were also not replenished. The service also in Bonjour Restaurant was terrible. We asked them first if we can be reserved for dinner and they said yes. But dinnertime come, no one from the several waiters wanted to approach us to tell us that they are closing or to get our orders. We were given a soup without spoon and fork. I will not recommend this hotel to any of my friends.

Nice well located property in Baguio City center. The only minus point is that there is no shower mat in any of the four rooms that I reserved. My 91 year old mother almost slipped while taking a shower. I suggest that they should look into this safety aspect to prevent potential accident/ injury to customers. Overall, the hotel is highly recommended.

Just adequate. No more no less. Will I go back again - most likely not. Breakfast ok. Room wifi was ok - performance wasn't the best. The day before I was planning to checkout, the toilet had blocked up. I informed the front desk at 6:30 am and when I got back at 10pm nothing had been done.

The bathtub at room 401 is a safety hazard. it’s hard to get in and out of the tub and water spill through the tub edges. No flash guards!

1. Few breakfast selection. Some of the food are not that hot anymore. 2. We checked in late, but still, the room wasn't ready and we had to wait for almost an hour before we can check in. But overall, it was okay.

The staff are very friendly and very very helpful always ready to serve with genuine smiles. After a long hour drive we look forward to relax but soon as we arrived, the lobby was chaotic. The hotel is old, mattress every hallway floor. Poor breakfast, restaurant staff was lazy to clean up buffet area.

Property is run down, cracks in the walls and ceilings, water leak stains on the ceilings, wallcoverings peeling off the walls, loose floor tiles, broken shower doors, only one electric outlet in the room. Minimal amenities, no minibar as advertised. This property does not deserve three star rating!
