Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the most common route to Metro Manila. Flight prices can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but you can often find round-trip fares from major cities like Cebu or Davao ranging from PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000. Booking your book flight early can secure better rates.

From NAIA, you have several options to reach Makati. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Grab are readily available and will cost approximately PHP 300-500, depending on traffic. Alternatively, you can take an airport bus or shuttle to a point closer to Makati and then transfer to a local jeepney or tricycle. This is a more budget-friendly option but requires more transfers and navigation.

If you are traveling from Luzon provinces outside Metro Manila, bus travel is a viable and economical choice. Numerous bus companies operate routes to major terminals in Metro Manila, such as those in Cubao or Pasay. From these terminals, you can easily catch a jeepney, bus, or taxi to reach your specific destination in Makati. Bus fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500 depending on the origin and bus class.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate. The best time to visit is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it more comfortable for outdoor activities and exploring the city. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 35°C.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy and prolonged. While this season offers lush greenery and fewer crowds, it can disrupt travel plans and make getting around the city more challenging due to potential flooding and traffic. If you visit during this period, it's wise to pack an umbrella and waterproof gear.

For travelers seeking to avoid the largest crowds and potentially find better accommodation rates, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or February. These periods fall within the dry season but might offer a slightly less crowded experience compared to the peak holiday season of December and January.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary heritage. While in Makati, make sure to try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households and restaurants.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, shrimp, or fish. The distinct sourness comes from tamarind, though other fruits like guava or calamansi can also be used. It’s a comforting dish, especially on a cooler or rainy day, offering a unique flavor profile that Filipinos love.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an absolute delight. This popular dessert is a colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a refreshing treat perfect for the tropical climate and a fun, interactive dessert experience that’s a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Don't leave without trying Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its crispy skin and succulent meat. While a whole lechon is often for celebrations, many restaurants offer lechon kawali (fried pork belly) or lechon manok (roasted chicken) as more accessible options. The rich, savory flavor is truly a Filipino specialty.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and warmth. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders is deeply ingrained in the culture, so showing deference is appreciated. Understanding basic etiquette will enhance your interactions.

When it comes to safety in Makati, like any major city, it's important to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also wise to have the hotel's contact number readily available.

For navigating the city and staying connected, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for booking rides and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is invaluable for directions, and a currency converter app can help you manage your budget. Having a local SIM card or ensuring your roaming plan is active is also advisable.

Familiarize yourself with common transportation methods like jeepneys and buses. While they are the most economical ways to travel, understanding their routes can be challenging for newcomers. Using ride-sharing apps or taxis for longer distances or when time is limited is often more straightforward. Always ensure taxi meters are used or agree on a fare beforehand.

Staff were incredibly accommodating, but the room leaves so much to be desired. There were no power outlets near the sink area, which means the microwave and water are pretty much useless. The floor tiles are loose, and some of them were already broken, which could cause an injury. Everything else is good, the staff are easy to talk to, they helped me when I left an important item in my room, and the location is near most stores if you want to buy food and other personal supplies.

It was so so. I booked a room that's a but bigger than what we stayed at. There was no table and chair to use. Dirty towels. Only 1 shampoo and soap was given when we were 2 pax. What I like was we were able to check in early and it was no hassle checking out. The place is also near quite a number of shops like cash and carry and etc..

I stayed for three nights in Dian. The experience was okay. The room price if you book online is far cheaper compare to walk-in price. My first night in a standard room was okay, however the sink in the bathroom took time to subside so I moved to the executive suite on my second day. The bed was bigger and comfy, microwave and mini fridge are provided but I couldn't use them at the same time because of the limited electric power etc... When I was using the fridge, the microwave just wouldn't work. There's no handheld bidet shower for the toilet use, and the water heater wasn't working during my stay. But still, I'd recommend this place to my friends and to you guys. There's privacy in here as long as the guests are considerate to the other guests and avoid shouting or making loud noises especially at the lobby area. The staffs are friendly too.

No wifi. TV remote not working. Shower not working. Electic kettle not working. Well you get what you pay for. It's enough for just staying overnight, though.

I highly salute the security guards of Dian Suites Hotel in Palanan, Makati. They are professional and always smile to the customers, attentive, and approachable. The accommodation is a perfect place for couples, etc.

Tiles were protruding or loose from the floor. No mini fridge on the room and utensils to eat. Quite okay place to spend the night.

Aircon not working. We had to use electric fan. Room full of cockroach. No telephone, no cable tv, and no wifi. Filthy bathroom. Price not justifiable.

it's not my firs time on the hotel. they must improve their service like cleaning the bathroom. I suggest to provide a wifi access inside the accommodation.

The place is good. The only thing that im not satisfied is the broken appliances. The microwave and electric kettle does not work. Just go down with me 3 times for electric kettle.
