Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most travelers coming from major Philippine cities like Cebu, Davao, or Iloilo, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila is the most practical option. Flights are frequent, and you can often find competitive fares if you book in advance. Prices can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the season and airline. You can easily book flight tickets through Traveloka.

From NAIA, reaching Makati involves a taxi, ride-sharing service, or a pre-booked airport transfer. The journey typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, but traffic can significantly extend this time, especially during peak hours. For a more budget-friendly option, you can take a bus from the airport terminals to designated drop-off points in Makati, though this requires more navigation.

If you are traveling from Luzon cities like Baguio or Pampanga, bus travel is a viable and economical choice. Numerous bus companies operate routes to Metro Manila, with terminals located strategically. The travel time can range from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the origin city and traffic. From the bus terminals in Metro Manila, you can then take a taxi or public transport to reach Makati.

Driving your own vehicle is also an option if you are coming from nearby provinces. Major expressways connect various regions to Metro Manila. However, be prepared for heavy traffic within the metro area, and ensure you are familiar with Makati's road network or use a reliable GPS navigation app. Parking availability and cost should also be considered.

Best Time to Visit Makati

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Makati is no exception. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the cool dry season, which typically runs from November to February. During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, with lower humidity and comfortable temperatures, making it ideal for exploring the city on foot or enjoying outdoor activities.

The hot dry season follows from March to May, where temperatures can soar, and humidity levels increase. While still a popular time for travel, especially during Holy Week, it can be quite warm. The rainy season, from June to October, brings frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this season can offer lower accommodation prices, be prepared for potential disruptions to travel plans due to weather.

For those looking to avoid the largest crowds and potentially find better deals on accommodation and flights, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as late October or early November, or late February. You can still enjoy relatively good weather while experiencing fewer tourists. Ultimately, the "best" time depends on your personal preferences for weather and crowd levels.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Makati offers a culinary landscape that reflects the Philippines' diverse flavors. When you're here, you absolutely must try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, the savory blend of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns is a comforting taste of home. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries and even some upscale restaurants in Makati.

Another Filipino favorite is Sinigang, a sour soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, shrimp, or fish. The tamarind-based broth is both refreshing and hearty, perfect for any weather. Look for restaurants that offer this comforting soup, especially on a cooler evening or after a long day of exploring. It’s a true taste of Filipino home cooking.

For a taste of something grilled, Lechon Kawali is a must. This dish features crispy, deep-fried pork belly that is incredibly satisfying. The crunchy skin and tender meat are often served with a dipping sauce. It’s a celebratory dish that’s widely loved and available in many Filipino restaurants throughout Makati.

Don't leave without trying Halo-Halo for dessert. This iconic Filipino treat is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a perfect way to cool down and indulge your sweet tooth. Many cafes and restaurants in Makati serve their own unique versions of this popular dessert.

Finally, explore the street food scene or local carinderias for dishes like Sisig. Traditionally made from chopped pig's face and ears, it's a sizzling, savory, and slightly spicy dish often served with calamansi and onions. It's a popular pulutan (bar snack) but also a delicious meal in itself.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to older individuals or those in authority, showing deference. Understanding basic Filipino phrases can also enhance your interactions.

When it comes to safety in Makati, like any major city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas like markets or public transport. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, particularly at night. If you encounter any issues, feel free to approach hotel staff or local authorities.

For emergencies, know that the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. It's also helpful to have the contact numbers for your hotel and the local police precinct readily available. Staying informed about current events and any advisories issued by local authorities can also help you navigate your trip safely.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used and offer convenient transportation options. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are popular among Filipinos. Having these apps on your smartphone will make your journey smoother.

There was nothing really wrong at all, however a bit over priced for the age, style and condition. A similar hotel is typically a bit lower priced on that area.

The staff was really nice and helpful. The free WiFi was spotty at best on all the floors. The free breakfast was cold at 9:00. The area around the hotel was under construction, not their fault though. I saw a mouse running across the hall and woke up with my bedside table covered in ants. Only half the TV channels worked in my room, but one floor lower and the majority of them worked.

This is a cheap hotel in the makati area. Sooooo the AC was cloud time to time. The hotel is marked incorrectly in google, its in the poor area which is where we ended up in, and to correct the situation, we tried calling the place and surprise, the number was not updated and incorrect. I would look else wear. The bathroom wasn't too clean either.

The hotle did exactly what it needed to, put me up near Greenbelt. It was reasonably comfortable. The room was clean. It's an older hotel, but in reasonable condition. The staff were friendly. The location is convenient. There are renovations going on, which is a bit of a disruption if you are sleeping during working hours.

Hallways are old and gloomy. Room was like a closet. The window was blocked cause the view seemed to be a block wall 2 foot away. Breakfast was terrible, Filipino hot dogs for breakfast? No attemp to accomodate a westerner. Would not recommend this hotel.

The hallways of El Cielito hotel are old and smell Moldy and Mildewy. I would be embarassed to bring a guest back. This is not a three star hotel. Also the windows in my room could not seel shut or close tight. This hotel is overpriced and overrated.

The English pronunciation of employees was really bad.. Sometimes I couldn't understand. Also, the room was too small and it doesn't have slippers as well as there's no showerhead which we can handle

Hotel is close to shops and sky way which makes it easy to travel to the airport. Food was ok. Room is quite big and comfy bed but carpet a bit old. Staff are helpful especially Ernie. Room rate very reasonable. I’ll definitely stay again.

There was nothing really wrong at all, however a bit over priced for the age, style and condition. A similar hotel is typically a bit lower priced on that area.

The place is old and quite basic but reasonably clean. Bed was comfortable amd pilloqs decent. Towels were tired and old. No safe in the room but safe facility in a room behind the reception (limited and old. Breakfast was uninspired and disappointing.

The hotel is clean. Room is not soundproof. A buffet breakfast is only served if the hotel's total guests reached 30, otherwise they will just serve your chosen breakfast menu from the limited list provided. Overall, the staff is friendly and my stay is comfortable.
