Rooms are basic, but they are kept very clean and the staff including the guards are very, very friendly and helpful. We spent 5 days there and it was always good to come “home” at the end of the day. The guards out the front would most of the time be a step ahead of us in what we would need and along with the other staff and the amenities made our stay seamless. Thank you to all the staff you made our stay not only comfortable but memorable.

Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers coming from Manila or other major islands, flying is the most efficient way to reach Cebu City. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Flight durations from Manila are typically around 1 hour and 30 minutes, with fares varying significantly based on booking time and season, often ranging from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip. Booking your book flight in advance is highly recommended.

If you prefer a more economical, albeit longer, journey, bus travel is an option for those coming from nearby Visayas islands. Ferries also connect Cebu to various ports in the Visayas and Mindanao, offering a scenic and budget-friendly way to travel, though journeys can take several hours. For those driving from islands like Bohol or Negros, ferry services are available for vehicles, connecting you directly to Cebu.

Once you arrive at Mactan-Cebu International Airport, you can take a taxi, ride-sharing service, or the airport bus to reach Cebu City proper. The journey to Escario Central Hotel typically takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. Taxis are readily available, and ride-sharing apps are also popular and convenient for navigating the city.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's warm and humid year-round. The dry season, generally from December to May, is considered the most pleasant time to visit, with lower chances of rain and slightly more comfortable temperatures. This period, especially from December to February, offers sunny days perfect for exploring the city's historical sites and enjoying outdoor activities.

The wet season runs from June to November, characterized by higher humidity and a greater likelihood of rainfall, often in the form of short, intense downpours. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower prices, it's advisable to pack an umbrella and be prepared for occasional disruptions to outdoor plans. Regardless of the season, Cebu City's attractions are generally accessible, and the city's indoor attractions and dining scenes remain unaffected.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Cebu is complete without savoring its culinary delights. A must-try is the world-famous Cebu Lechon, known for its incredibly crispy skin and flavorful, succulent meat, often seasoned with a blend of spices. While many places offer lechon, seeking out local favorites like CNT Lechon or Zubuchon will give you an authentic taste of this Cebuano specialty.

Another local favorite is Kinilaw, Cebu's version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is "cooked" in vinegar, often with ginger, onions, chili, and calamansi. It’s a refreshing dish, perfect for the tropical climate. You can find excellent kinilaw in many local carinderias and seafood restaurants across the city.

For those with a sweet tooth, try the Rosquillos, a sweet biscuit originating from Liloan, Cebu. These ring-shaped cookies have a slightly sweet, crumbly texture and are perfect with coffee or as a simple snack. You can find them in local bakeries and souvenir shops throughout Cebu City. Don't forget to also sample dried mangoes, a popular pasalubong that represents Cebu's tropical bounty.

Exploring the food scene near Escario Central Hotel means you're close to many establishments. For a taste of local Filipino cuisine with a modern twist, consider restaurants in the nearby Ayala Center Cebu. For more traditional Cebuano dishes, venture into local eateries that specialize in lechon and seafood, many of which are a short taxi ride away.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is known for its hospitality and strong sense of community. Filipinos are generally warm and welcoming, so feel free to engage with locals, but always be respectful of their customs. When visiting religious sites like churches or mosques, dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. It's also customary to greet elders with "po" and "opo" as a sign of respect.

Cebu City is generally safe for tourists, but like any urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid displaying expensive items openly, and be cautious of petty theft, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of your belongings. For emergencies, the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. It's also a good idea to have the hotel's contact number readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. Grab is indispensable for booking rides and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, helping you find your way around the city. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by locals. Having these apps can significantly simplify your stay in Cebu City.

I like the location and the staff and that they go about their functions in a orderly manner. The room was nice. But could do with a bit of sprucing up. A moveable table would do good. The bathroom lighting leaves a lot to be desired for shaving as it is quite dim. And, I did face a lot of problems with WiFi connectivity; which I wish that the owners would look into. All-in-all, I will definitely visit the place again, when I am in Cebu next.

I liked everything except the facts that: 1. There is no table in the room. If we need to have food. 2. The lighting in the toilet is poor, and as such is an inconvenience for men, when it comes to shaving.

My girlfriend and I stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks, so I think i have a pretty good idea about the amenities and services offered here. First of all, the service was poor. Really only two of the people that were working there seemed to know or care about their jobs or the comfort of the guests. The girls that greeted us there when we arrived treated us like they were doing us a favour letting us stay there, rather than like guests. I didn't feel welcome, cared for, accommodated, or humanised. I wasn't crashing at my friends pad for two weeks, I was a cash paying customer and expected to be treated hospitably. Moreover, the staff are in the habit of making rude remarks to the guests in Tagalog or Cebuano and that is wrong on so many levels. I can't explain why it happened, other than due to a lack of training or sheer unprofessionalism, but it was uncalled for. My girlfriend, a Filipino, agreed so herself. Lastly, we had a lot of mosquitos in our room, ants on the walls, and after only 3 or 4 days of staying at the Escario, our shower drain clogged, flooding the bathroom. There also was construction going on in a new restaurant just a ways from where were were staying. There was cutting, sawing, banging, laughing, scraping going on till 2:00, 3:00, and sometimes 4:00am for almost a week. I pleaded with hotel staff to have it stopped or controlled practically every night, but it went on and on. It bears worth saying that the best part of our stay at the Escario was leaving.

Easy access to public transportation routes, malls, restaurants, and services. Escario St is very busy, so crossing the street is not for the uninitiated or the faint of heart. Air quality is also a concern.
