Your Travel Guide to Naga as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Naga from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila, the most convenient way to reach Naga is by air. Flights typically land at Naga Airport (WNP) or nearby airports, with travel times being significantly shorter than land travel. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka, often finding competitive fares, especially if booked in advance.

Alternatively, bus travel from Manila to Naga is a popular and economical option for many Filipino travelers. Numerous bus companies operate daily trips, offering both day and night services. The journey usually takes around 8 to 10 hours, depending on traffic and stops. Fares are generally affordable, making it a practical choice for those on a tighter budget.

For those who prefer to drive, Naga City is accessible via the Pan-Philippine Highway. The road conditions are generally good, making it a feasible option for road trips. This allows for flexibility and the opportunity to stop at various points of interest along the way, experiencing more of the country's landscapes.

Best Time to Visit Naga

Naga City experiences a tropical climate, with generally warm temperatures throughout the year. The dry season typically runs from November to May, offering sunny days that are ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. This period is considered peak season, especially around holidays.

The wet season, from June to October, can bring frequent rainfall. While this might deter some outdoor plans, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. For travelers who don't mind occasional rain showers and are looking for a more relaxed pace, visiting during this time can be quite pleasant.

The Peñafrancia Festival, celebrated in September, is a major event that draws thousands of pilgrims and tourists. If you plan to visit during this time, expect the city to be exceptionally lively but also very crowded. Booking accommodations and transport well in advance is crucial if you wish to experience this significant cultural event.

Food and Dining Near Naga — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Naga, you absolutely must try Bicol Express, a spicy stew made with pork, coconut milk, and plenty of chilies. Its rich, creamy, and fiery flavor is a true representation of Bicolano cuisine. You can find authentic versions in many local eateries and restaurants throughout the city.

Another local delicacy to savor is Laing, which features taro leaves simmered in coconut milk with dried fish or shrimp. It’s a comforting and flavorful dish, often served as a side or main course. The subtle, earthy taste of laing is a delightful contrast to the boldness of Bicol Express.

Don't leave Naga without trying Kinunot, a dish made from shark or stingray meat cooked in vinegar and coconut milk, often with malunggay leaves. The unique texture and tangy flavor make it a memorable culinary experience. It’s evidence of the region’s creative use of local ingredients.

For those with a sweet tooth, try the local pili nuts, often candied or made into pastries. These nuts have a distinct flavor and are a popular pasalubong (souvenir). You can find them in various forms at local markets and specialty shops, offering a sweet end to your culinary journey in Naga.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Naga

Naga City is known for its devout Catholic population, with the veneration of Our Lady of Peñafrancia being central to its cultural identity. When visiting churches or religious sites, dressing modestly is appreciated. Filipinos are generally warm and hospitable, so engaging with locals respectfully can enrich your travel experience.

Safety in Naga is generally good, but as with any city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. For emergencies, know the local police hotline number, which can usually be found at your accommodation or through a quick online search.

For seamless travel, consider downloading essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-hailing apps or local transport apps can also be helpful for getting around the city. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Messenger to stay in touch with family and friends.

Having a local currency converter app can be useful for quick calculations, and a translation app might come in handy if you encounter language barriers, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. These digital tools can significantly enhance your convenience and safety during your exploration of Naga.

My overall experience for Eurotel Naga is good. The room is pleasant and comfy for a budget hotel. There’s also complimentary water. Toiletries is enough for the whole stay. The only thing I found disgusting are cockroaches inside the room although it didn’t bother me, just kindly update your pest control for it. For the breakfast, I’m satisfied and the hotel crew’s Hospitable. Thumbs up! Will definitely stay for next time! The front desk and security is great too! More power!

Booked for a 2-night stay. During that length of stay, I had to transfer to 3 different rooms. The first one was because my room didn't have mobile signal. The second room was flooding (Heavy rains due to typhoon Urduja). When I woke up the floor of the room was flooded. The other side of my bed was already wet and even my bags and stuff was wet. So they decided to transfer me to another room. Still the roof was dripping. But didn't mind it anymore as I was checking out the next day. And raining had stop already. The whole time I was there, there was no cable on the tv. They didn't have phone connection and so I had to go down to the lobby from 3rd/5th floor every time I had a request. Water smells bad. I was too scared to use it to brush my teeth. Only good thing about the place is the food.

The room's air condition unit was poor. WiFi connection was too slow.

The hotel is clean and the suite that I booked is classy and comfy at a very affordable price. The place is located in the centro (city proper) very accessible to other prominent areas in the city. The food is great and the staff are very accommodating. I would like to recommend the hotel to other travelers.

There is no option between the great and bad stay, actually it's just a good stay

Good for a one night stay. Shower and AC ok. Comfortable and neat beddings. Accessible and easy to locate. Front desk officers and guards are nice to talk to. Overall it was a good place to stay.

Everything was okay. Nothing too grand, nothing too shabby. Except I wish they could've provided the aircon's remote so we could adjust the temperature.
