Feels just like home. The vibe is great, staff are friendly. I love the benches at the backyard overlooking the sea. Would definitely come back next time.

I had an awesome time at the hostel. Perfect spot for relaxing. And the view of the beach is awesome. WiFi is great, too. Food a bit pricey but tastes good.

friendly staff, good breakfast, clean beach
Tried the kubo dorms and was okay for the price that they charge a night. I loved that the restrooms were clean and the beach was clean (except for a few cigarette butts here & there) The rates also include breakfast so hurray for that. great location as it is at walking distance from nice cafes

Good but can be better
This place was recommended to me bu a colleague for it’s super chill vibe and it’s exactly that. It was the perfect weekend hangout place with your dear friends. When we arrived, a tropical storm just exited the Ilocos region area and we thought that would somehow spoil our trip, it didn’t. Thanks to the relaxing waves of La Union, and the good food and relaxing ambiance and decent accommodation (clean rooms and shower & toilet even if it’s shared among guests) at Flotsam. How could it have been better? A touch of warm Filipino customer service will do— the kind that makes you feel you are welcome and that the staff/owners appreaciate your business. We arrived around few mins before 12, and naturally you would go to the reception area to checkin and drop ur bags. And the lady who was manning the reception adamantly said “Check in is at 2pm” when I said we were going to check in. I get it, your hostel policy said so in the website. And I honestly respect that. Astoria in Boracay, Nobu City of Dreams and a few others did the same thing to me, but they said it with courtesy and warmth, plus they offered you options on how And where I can spend my waiting time. That lady in the reception only started saying we can leave our bags and hang out at the resto after an awkward 5-sec silence and a “this girl is unbelievable” look on my face. Same experience when we asked if we can extend for a couple of hours, answer was a curt “No, someone is checking in after you”. We had to ask what options we have if we wanna hang out a little longer. It would also help if the resto cashier you reiterate that you’re a self service hostel. Setting the expectation on where to get water, napkins, utensils would make the experience better had it been done as they were giving you your change.

Much Improved over the years..you can grow with this place
Been here three years ago when they were just starting with kubo hut dormitory and a small building dorm and and big common dining kubo and small restaurant, the place has really matured into a nice hostels for the young millenials looking for a dynamic active social resort. The restaurant has expanded ans so has its menu and bar along with a new building in the back near the street that has more modern facilities for folks looking for a bit more of comfort. Even on weekdays, there are always a handful of guests just lounging if not surfers but the surfing is great around the typhoon season in October to December. A much better surfing alternative close to Manila than Baler or Siargao.

Chill vibe
Me and my friends booked the sea view room with daybed for 1 night last October 14-15. We were not disappointed with the room because it's really clean. The place itself is also clean which is a big plus points for someone like me. The staff were very accomodating and since they are all millenials you can approach them without hesitation. The breakfast was basic as stated on their website but they offered almost all flavors of jams you can imagine which is good. The party at night was the highlight of our trip. I think almost all of the tourists go here just to party. I would definitely recommend this to my other friends. Keep it up :)

Blah.
Stayed here overnight on a weekday. I booked on their website a "Garden View Twin with Daybed" but when I arrived to check-in late in the afternoon, my cousin and I where given a "Garden View Queen with Balcony." Later on, I found out on their website that we were given a cheaper room category, no explanations given whatsoever, not even an apology from the staff who checked us in. I didn't bother asking about it because I was too tired to even say anything and just wanted a bed to sleep-in and get some rest after a looooong bus ride. I guess if my cousin and I arrived earlier that day, we would've gotten the room that I initially booked with the separate beds, but maybe because we arrived late, they gave the room to some other guest. TIP: MAYBE it would help if you guys contact the resort ahead of time before your arrival so your ACTUAL booked rooms are given to you and you won't get any "unnecessary" surprises upon arrival. The hostel is not hard to find and super accessible by commuting since it is alongside the San Juan La Union surfing area highway. It is on the far end of the surfing area, so if you want privacy and to be away from all the other surfing public, this is a good spot for you. Food and everything else in their bar/ resto are reasonably priced, although nothing spectacular on the menu worth raving about. Room rate includes a "basic breakfast" for two which consists of two kinds of loaf bread (white or wheat), seasonal fruits, a selection of cereals, some local kakanins (sticky rice that time), milk, juice, and refillable brewed coffee. If you want to skip the free "basic breakfast" you have to wait until 8-ish am or 9-ish am when their kitchen is open. Rooms are well appointed and clean. Staff attitude are okay, may come off as intimidating but nevertheless when you start a convo with them, they would gladly answer your queries. If you want to surf, located just a few steps away from the hostel there's a surfing lesson area that charges 300-up for an hour depending on the season, maybe. The hostel is a good 5-10 minute walk to the other areas with "more people" and more restos. Overall the experience wasn't as fantastic as I expected it would be, considering that this hostel has been one of the go-tos of most millennials. Over-hyped. Not staying here again any time soon, but I will definitely try the other resorts/ hotels nearby in the not so distant future. Not SUPER recommending this hostel primarily because of the room mix-up I experienced upon check-in with no explanations from the poker-faced staff.
