"The surfing capital of the North has been a favorite spot for weekend warriors. Aside from surfing, La Union has a lot of interesting activities you can try. Go cliff-jumping in the main cascade of Tangadan Falls, visit Ma-Cho Temple, or visit Luna Pebble Beach which is also known as “the pebble capital of the North” because of its landscape."

The whole resort is clean. The room and the bed are so comfy. The beach front is also clean and calm. My kids loved the place, so it's family approved. Will definitely go back for more family time.

This place is perfect for couples, families with kids, and friends who want to have a peaceful La Union getaway. It is not situated in busy/party areas of San Juan, but is only 5-7mins drive away. The place is well maintained, the superior rooms are very spacious. I love that this property is located right by the beach, so you can conveniently watch the sunrise/sunset. We also enjoyed swimming at the property's pool right after spending time on the beach.

Great staff. Excellent service. Rooms are nice and clean. Swimming pools are good especially for kids. Food is not so great (we got a an undercooked pizza after waiting for 1 hour). There are plenty of flies which they could not control. It would be good if they put screens on their restaurants. The flies were really annoying, in fairness to the staff, they try to clean the place as much as they can but it was not really enough to stop the flies. Also, the breakfast include dried fish and shrimp paste which attract more flies. There are also electrical junction boxes next to the kids pool which are probably for the lighting, potential safety hazards which should be fixed. Some chipped tiles next to the infinity pool in the Villas which should also be fixed. They should also fix the road leading to the entrance and add more signs, report the flickering street light nearby. Other than those, it was a great place.

The resort and room looks exactly the same as the pictures online. The whole resort in general is clean, spacious and secured. Also, I like that it is beachfront and staff are polite and greet/approach us with a smile.

I hope I can give them negative stars. Here's what went wrong. 1. When we arrived, the parking lot was already packed. There was no security guard on duty so it was a struggle to find a parking space. Imagine I had to drive backwards from the parking lot to the road because there were cars that were about to get out, and the entrance/exit is only one lane (the entrance was steep). Good thing the drivers there were very helpful. 2. We ended up going to the nearby resort to ask if we can just pay a shower fee to use their shower area because there was a long line, and they ran out of water. 3. Come dinner time, we ordered our food from their restaurant. We waited for more than an hour only to find out that our order has not even been started yet. We were already hungry so we opted to cancel our order, and went out to look for another restaurant. 4. We decided not to get our breakfast because there was already a very long line at the restaurant at 7am and we were in a hurry. Also, a lot of the customers who waited in line very early were already complaining that they have been waiting so long for their order. Kawawa yung mga staff nila dahil sila sumasalo sa mga complaints ng mga tao. 5. We had another parking lot problem. We checked out at 8am. Upon getting to the parking lot, there was a car parked in the drive way. I went to the front desk to ask for assistance, but no one was there. I had to ask one of their restaurant crews for help, but nothing happened. I ended up asking people. However, I was not able to locate the owner of the car and we really had to go. Good thing the drivers in the parking lot were really nice, and they helped us solve the problem. Again, no guard on duty. If the management reads this, please please please do not just accept and accept customers if you cannot serve them well. I'm really disappointed with how we were treated even if we booked the pricey bali huts. It's not okay that we didn't get our money's worth, but what's more frustrating is that our long-awaited vacay turned into a nightmare. I hope your future customers do not get the same treatment.

About

San Juan Beach

The province of La Union is famous for its coastline which has perfect waves for surfing all year-round. In addition to its surfing beaches, La Union boasts of its historical places, old churches and delicious delicacies for its visitors who are not just seeking adventure but also beauty in a province.

La Union is located at the Northwest side of the Philippines resulting to it being lined with beautiful surfing beaches. It is a perfect place for a long stop-over if you are traveling from or further North.

How to Go

By plane

Direct commercial flights to San Fernando City Airport are currently limited and seasonal. There are private charter flights are available but are expensive. An alternative is to take a flight to Clark International Airport in Pampanga, take a jeepney or taxi ride to Dau Terminal, and then ride a bus going to La Union.

If you take a flight to Manila, from there you have to go to Partas Bus Terminal in Pasay where you can find buses going to La Union.

By boat or ferry

Traveling by sea is not yet an available option to go directly to La Union. If you are coming outside Luzon, your boat or ferry should take you to Batangas port. Then, from there you have to ride a bus going North.

By land transportation

From Manila, Partas buses are the most popular choice of ride going to La Union. There are other bus lines available. Travel time usually takes 5-6 hours. Renting a van is also an option if your group wants to travel exclusively.

If you are driving on your own, from Manila take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), exit at Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac, drive straight along the National Highway through Pangasinan, and then you will arrive at La Union.

Getting Around

In going around the province, there are jeepneys, tricycles, mini-buses and vans-for-rent. You can always ask the locals which mode of transport is the best for where you are going.

Tourist Attractions

La Union is sometimes called the Garden Coast because of its botanical gardens and its surfing communities.

Namacpacan Church

The Taoist Ma-Cho Temple and many old Catholic churches such as the Basilica of Our Lady of Charity and Our Lady of Namacpacan are important tourist spots.

Top Things to Do

Surfing is a must do when you to La Union. The surfing resorts in the towns of San Juan and Urbiztondo has everything for surfers, professionals, beginners or even for just the curious ones. Or you can just watch a surfing competition if you come in December.

Tangadan Falls

Visit also the ten-hectare Botanical Gardens in San Fernando City. Explore the rice fields of Bolikewkew, Delles and Burgos or walk along the Arosip Ecotrail. You may also see the Tangadan Falls and other natural water formations in the province such as Luna Pebble Beach. As a day ends in La Union, stop to watch the sunset on the beach.

Where to Eat

Halo Halo de Iloko

Meals served in most resorts are excellent and must be tried at least once when you stay with them. For authentic Ilocano food, visit Halo-Halo de Iloko. There are also numerous seafood restaurants that you can try. The Australian-Filipino restaurant Lola Nanny’s is highly recommended for those who wish to try authentic Australian meat pies in La Union.

Nightlife

At night, La Union gives you a choice either to party or to relax. Most resorts have a bar and grill, though not many are open 24 hours. If you prefer a different ambience, you can sit by the beach and light a bonfire.

Where to Stay

Thunderbid Resorts and Casinos - Poro Point

Most accommodations are rooms at the beach resorts, so that if you want to sleep and wake up with the sound of the waves, try checking in at Isla Bonita Beach Resort, San Juan Surf Resort and Surfer’s Inn. Check out the fancy Thunderbird Resort if in addition to the surfing experience, you want some time playing in a casino or in a golf course as well.

There are also dorm-type accommodations were staying overnight is cheaper, like in Hacienda Peter’s Surf Resort.

Travel Tips

  • Visit the province during December to February for the best waves for surfing.
  • Bring a waterproof camera! Bring your best beach outfit as well, but keep a rash guard which is more suitable for surfing.
  • Prepare for a cold bus ride. Exercise a little as well after that 6 hour seated travel.
