Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For many Filipinos, Boracay Island is a dream destination, and reaching it from major hubs like Manila, Cebu, or Davao is more accessible than you might think. From Manila, the most common and quickest way is by air. You can book flight tickets to either Caticlan Airport (MPH), which is the closest to Boracay, or Kalibo International Airport (KLO). Flights to Caticlan are generally more expensive but significantly reduce your land and sea travel time.

Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate these routes. Expect flight prices to range from approximately PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 or more for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. Travel time to Caticlan is about an hour, while to Kalibo it's around 1.5 hours.

From Caticlan Airport, a short tricycle ride (around PHP 50-100) takes you to the Caticlan Jetty Port. From there, a 15-minute boat ride (PHP 50-100) will bring you to Boracay Island's Cagban Port. Terminal and environmental fees at the port will add another PHP 200-300. From Cagban Port, tricycles are readily available to take you to your accommodation, such as Giulius Boracay Italian Resort in Station 2, for about PHP 100-150.

If you fly into Kalibo, the journey to Caticlan Jetty Port is longer, typically a 1.5 to 2-hour bus or van ride (PHP 200-300), before you proceed with the boat transfer.

For budget-conscious travelers, bus travel is an option, though it's considerably longer. From Manila's various bus terminals (like Cubao or Pasay), you can find buses heading towards Caticlan. This journey can take anywhere from 10 to 14 hours, with ticket prices ranging from approximately PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 one way. This option is best suited for those who have ample time and prefer to save on airfare.

Similar bus routes are available from other major cities, though direct routes to Caticlan might be less frequent.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

Boracay Island experiences two main seasons: the dry season (Amihan) and the wet season (Habagat). The dry season typically runs from November to May, characterized by calmer seas, less rainfall, and gentle winds blowing from the northeast. This period is considered the peak tourist season, especially from December to February, when the weather is most pleasant for beach activities, swimming, and water sports.

If you prefer sunny days and ideal conditions for exploring the island, visiting during these months is highly recommended.

The wet season, from June to October, is influenced by the Habagat winds, which bring stronger winds from the southwest and more frequent rainfall. While this period can see occasional typhoons, it doesn't mean constant rain. There are still plenty of sunny days, but the seas can be rougher, which might affect some water activities.

The advantage of visiting during the wet season is that there are fewer crowds and accommodation prices can be lower, offering a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially better value for money for wallet-conscious travelers. For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or May.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When you're on Boracay Island, exploring the local culinary scene is as much a part of the experience as the beaches. Filipino travelers should definitely seek out fresh seafood, a staple here. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid, often simply seasoned and cooked to perfection, are readily available at beachfront eateries and local markets. Look for stalls in D'Mall or along the main paths for freshly caught options.

Another must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. The tangy, spicy, and refreshing flavors are perfect for the tropical climate. You'll find excellent Kinilaw at many local restaurants, often served as an appetizer.

Don't leave Boracay without trying Halo-Halo, the ultimate Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream is a delightful treat. It's a perfect way to cool down after a day in the sun. Many cafes and restaurants offer their own unique versions, so be sure to sample a few.

For a taste of local comfort food, try La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork, shrimp, and vegetables, originating from Iloilo but popular across the Philippines. While not strictly a Boracay specialty, it's a satisfying meal available in many local eateries and a comforting option, especially on a cooler evening. Exploring the smaller eateries away from the main tourist strips can often lead to discovering authentic and delicious Filipino dishes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

Boracay Island, while a tourist hotspot, retains a strong sense of local Filipino culture. The islanders are known for their hospitality and warmth. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites or when away from the beach areas. It's also customary to be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas or during late hours.

Safety on Boracay Island is generally good, but like any popular tourist destination, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. Be cautious of unsolicited offers for tours or services; it's best to book through reputable establishments or your hotel. For emergencies, the local police can be reached at their hotline, and it's always a good idea to have the contact number of your embassy or consulate readily available.

The island has a well-established medical clinic for minor issues.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigating the island, especially for finding your way between stations or to specific restaurants. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are widely used by Filipinos. If you plan on booking activities or tours, the Traveloka app is your go-to for finding and booking attractions, flights, and accommodation.

Having these tools on your smartphone can make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.

The room was full of mosquito. No water in the room unless you asked for this everyday. Poor and lack of toiletries. The guests were noisy and staff did nothing about it. Breakfast was bored to death. Overall, it was the worst hotel I have ever stayed. I will never be a return guest..

Awesome breakfast and hospitality! Left my wallet in the room when checked out, yet the Hotel management managed to contact me and arranged courier service to send it back direct to my house in another country! Very grateful to have stayed in Giulius.

Staff are friendly and engaging. Kept the room clean everyday. Proximity to the beach shore was realistically short distance. Price was definitely reasonable. Only downside was the tenants who occupied the room above us who kept us awake in the wee hours of the night.

Highly recommended! The CR is just a little smelly so I think the management needs to check on it. Other than that, it was great. Food, Staff and rooms.
