Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several local airlines operate regular flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flights from Manila typically take around 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares varying based on booking time and airline promotions, often ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip.

For travelers coming from Visayas or Mindanao, direct flights might be limited, often requiring a layover in Manila. However, booking your book flight in advance can secure better prices and more convenient schedules. Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia are the primary carriers serving this route, offering various options to suit different budgets.

While land travel is possible for those coming from nearby Luzon provinces, it is a significantly longer journey. Bus trips from Manila can take upwards of 24 hours, often involving a ferry crossing from Batangas to Puerto Princesa. This option is considerably cheaper but requires a substantial time commitment and is generally less comfortable than flying.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

The ideal time to visit Puerto Princesa for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, perfect for island hopping tours, snorkeling, and exploring the famous Underground River. The weather is generally pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C.

The shoulder months, such as November and May, can offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer crowds compared to the peak season of December to February. If you prefer to avoid larger crowds and potentially find better deals on accommodation and tours, consider visiting during these periods. The rainy season, from June to October, can bring intermittent showers and occasional typhoons, which might disrupt outdoor activities.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Puerto Princesa offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects Palawan's unique flavors. A must-try dish is the Tamilok, a type of woodworm harvested from mangrove trees, often served fresh or grilled. While its appearance might be unusual, its briny, oyster-like taste is a unique Palawan delicacy that adventurous eaters should sample.

Another local specialty is the fresh seafood, abundant in Puerto Princesa due to its coastal location. Grilled fish, buttered shrimp, and various shellfish preparations are readily available in restaurants around the city. Look for establishments that source their seafood daily for the freshest and most flavorful experience.

Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, is also a highlight. Prepared with fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili, it’s a refreshing dish perfect for the tropical climate. Many local eateries and even some higher-end restaurants offer their own take on this classic Filipino appetizer.

For a taste of local comfort food, try the Chicken Inasal, a grilled chicken dish marinated in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, and annatto oil, giving it a distinct smoky flavor and vibrant color. You can find excellent versions of these dishes in local carinderias and restaurants scattered throughout Puerto Princesa, many within easy reach from Go Hotels Puerto Princesa.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa is known for its friendly locals and generally relaxed atmosphere. While exploring, it's polite to greet people with a smile and use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders, showing respect for local customs. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, but like any travel destination, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings. Keep valuables secure, especially in crowded areas, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit places late at night. For emergencies, the local police hotline is 911. Adventist Hospital Palawan is also nearby for medical needs.

Essential apps for your trip include a reliable navigation app like Google Maps for getting around, a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who speak different dialects, and ride-hailing apps if available in the city for convenient transport. Having a local SIM card can also be beneficial for staying connected and accessing data services easily.

There was a system glitch. Someone or a group of people entered my room and they said they were given access to the same room. I was just about to sleep and I was shocked that a simple system glitch (as the management staff says) could ruin this experience. This is the first time it happened to me and it was a horrible experience.

The hotel has a good location but the service/facilities (internet, room amenities, etc) is poor. Hope they would consider providing some table, chair, drinking glass, etc) in all their rooms regardless of type, and most importantly hotel shuttle.

The only good thing about this hotel is the location if you plan to use the transport terminal. Service by the staff is terrible. Staff all have this expression on their faces like you are nothing but annoyance to them. They don’t seem to know that the stability of their jobs depend on their guests and whether the guests would recommend their hotel to others or not. Aircon does not get cold, at night you’d think that you only have an electric fan. Wifi is terribly slow.

The room is not clean, the beddings has small stains and pillows looked very untidy. I wish I could transfer on that time due of tiredness I did not manage to. The cable tv is not clear. I called the reception to fix it but no one answered. I took more than 5 minutes but no one answered. The bthroom still wet and most of all the AC is not cool or cold. Very much dissappointed on this place unlike in other go hotels in the metro. Will not try this place again. Bad stay for me.

Affordable but it also refuses to make the experience homey. I particularly hate the hotel’s no food in the room policy, and while I got away with eating in my room, the signs plastered in the room made you uncomfortable about it. The hotel also needs serious interior work. They have a large mirror in the headrest but they don’t have storage. Granted it’s a hotel and they may argue that you don’t need all that storage, I would like to put my bags out of the way and out of sight. It would also be a good opportunity to organise your clothes and hang them. They mount a desk on a wall and you really can’t do much with it. You’re also given a sign that the desk can only handle a laptop at most (to do light work), but it’s also situate don’t in the darkest corner of the room where there is no lighting. The television is mounted too high and flat, and its hard to watch from the bed’s level when you lay down as there’s more glare. The air conditioning goes direct to the bed. A deflector would help. Granted it promises to make the hotel experience affordable for all Filipinos, I think most Filipinos would feel short-changed by the deliberate disingenuousness in providing the real no-frills comfort that everyone deserves.

Front desk is really good. But we arrived in the room - no towels, no bottled water, phone line was disconnected, aircon was not functioning well.

The front desk staff, yes, they are nice and accommodating. Their accommodation process was very poor and so with the room service, very very poor. I stayed there for 3 nights. First and foremost, the aircon was not working well. The first day i walked inn had to asked to fix that cause the ac was not working. The 2nd and third nights the same thing. So bad for the aircon. Another thing, they don’t clean the room. Every time I get back to the hotel room, it was still untidy. I have to asked them again and again to clean. The worst experienced was my third night. When I arrived from the beach need to shower, so tired and sleepy. It took me almost an hour to get inn cause the key entry to the room was disabled and when I stepped into the room was still a mess and untidy. I flared up so I called the room service again to do the thing while I was already in. Again the ac of the aircon was not working. They asked me to transfer room late in the evening without helping on transferring my things and I was already sleepy need to rest cause I had an early flight on the next day. So sorry to tell all these negative experiences, but that was I experienced with them . I was so mad, unsatisfied, unhappy and discontented during my stay with that hotel.

There was a system glitch. Someone or a group of people entered my room and they said they were given access to the same room. I was just about to sleep and I was shocked that a simple system glitch (as the management staff says) could ruin this experience. This is the first time it happened to me and it was a horrible experience.

Location is great, very near Robinsons and a few more establishments. A few minutes from the airport. Staffs are helpful enough. However, they have no airport transfer service.

The hotel has a good location but the service/facilities (internet, room amenities, etc) is poor. Hope they would consider providing some table, chair, drinking glass, etc) in all their rooms regardless of type, and most importantly hotel shuttle.

Clean rooms and very helpful staff. I suggest every room should have a least 2 cups and a kettle water heater..

I had a good night sleep though they don’t have any convenience store nearby. Also they need to improve their cable connection.

Near the Robinson’s mall. Very accommodating staffs. Though wifi connection is available, net speed can and must be improved. Also, TV reception is not that good too... but the stay is quite good.

Hotel is near Robinson's which is great, and public transport is easily accessible. But they need to check the A/C settings in the room since it changes from okay to not functioning. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay.

We had 3 problems with the rooms they gave; 1. The lock on the door keeps beeping; 2. The hot water works half of the time;3. The WIFI internet connection does not work, if I need to do some work while staying here, it will be impossible.

It was okay for the price. A typical budget hotel. Breakfast unavailable unless you buy it from a cafe below hotel.
