Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Boracay Island from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Major airlines operate frequent flights to Caticlan Airport (MPH), which is the closest airport to Boracay. Flight durations from Manila are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares typically ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and booking time. You can book flight tickets easily through various platforms.

Alternatively, you can fly into Kalibo International Airport (KLO), which is about a 1.5 to 2-hour bus or van ride from Caticlan Jetty Port. Flights to Kalibo are sometimes cheaper than those to Caticlan, but the longer land transfer adds to the overall travel time and cost. Bus services from Metro Manila to Caticlan Jetty Port are also available, with travel times ranging from 10 to 12 hours and fares typically between PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,500.

For those who prefer to drive, the journey from Manila to Caticlan Jetty Port involves navigating major highways and expressways. The total driving distance is around 500 kilometers, and it can take approximately 10 to 12 hours, excluding stops. Toll fees can add up, and it's essential to factor in fuel costs and potential overnight stays along the way.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

The peak season for visiting Boracay Island generally runs from November to April, coinciding with the dry season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and pleasant temperatures, making it ideal for beach activities, water sports, and island hopping. This period, however, also sees higher prices for accommodation and flights, and the island can be more crowded.

The Amihan season, from November to May, brings gentle northeast winds, resulting in calm waters and sunny weather, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Conversely, the Habagat season, from June to October, is characterized by southwest winds, which can bring occasional rain showers and rougher seas. While this period is less crowded and offers lower prices, it might not be ideal for all water activities.

For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as late October to early November or late April to early May. You can still enjoy much of Boracay's charm with more favorable rates and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Boracay Island offers a diverse culinary scene, blending local Filipino flavors with international influences. A must-try for any Filipino traveler is fresh seafood, often grilled or prepared in various traditional dishes. Look for restaurants serving *kinilaw*, a Filipino ceviche made with raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, and spices, or grilled squid and fish seasoned with local herbs.

Another local favorite is *La Paz Batchoy*, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo, which offers a comforting and flavorful experience. You can also find delicious *Halo-Halo*, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream, perfect for cooling down on a hot day.

For a taste of Boracay's unique offerings, try *Chori Burger*, a grilled chorizo patty served in a bun, often with a spicy sauce. It’s a popular street food snack that’s both satisfying and affordable. Many local eateries and food stalls around Station 2 and Station 3 serve these authentic dishes.

Don't forget to sample *Sinigang*, a sour and savory soup, often made with pork or seafood and a variety of vegetables. Its distinct tangy flavor is a staple in Filipino cuisine and a comforting dish to enjoy by the beach. Exploring the local markets and smaller eateries will often lead you to the most authentic and delicious versions of these dishes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

It’s advisable to use reputable transport services and be cautious of unsolicited offers. In case of emergencies, contact the local police or tourist assistance centers.

Ride-hailing apps or local transport booking apps might also be useful for getting around. Having a communication app like WhatsApp or Messenger is also handy for staying in touch.

The hotel staff were polite and accommodating; however, our overall stay was very disappointing. The electricity fluctuated frequently, and the generator kept overheating, which caused the air conditioning in our room to stop working. Unfortunately, my son and I both developed a high fever during our stay, and the lack of proper cooling added significant stress and discomfort. I requested at least a partial discount due to these issues, but the hotel did not coordinate with Expedia and never provided any update or resolution. Because of this experience, I will not choose to stay at this hotel again when I visit Boracay.

A great friendly bar. Staff were the best. Breakfast buffet was very Filipino based, nothing for foreigners. As a 77 year old I found it difficult to walk adjacent to the pool towards my room. Staff did their best to keep walkway dry but you can't stop kids from splashing

Terrible hotel, incompetent housekeeping personnel who do not know how to clean the room...just sweeped the floor and left, didn't refill the toiletries or made up the end or washed the coffee cups. The management tolerates liquor drinking and smoking infront of guest rooms until midnight with people shouting and laughing like it's their private place, your room will smell like cigarettes especially the row of 1009-1017, 1008-1016...in the morning, the area looks like a dumpster of trash left behind people.

We were in Boracay recently and booked our stay with Golden Phoenix. The first room offered to us had two single beds. The picture used on this website is quite misleading as I was told there are very few rooms in the hotel with a king size bed. Also, the room seemed to have been cleaned but one of the beds had a lot of sand on it. After speaking to reception we were finally given a new room with a king bed. The wifi system is quite annoying as well. At the front desk they display prices for wifi usage but we were given free access, only thing was we had to get a new code every 24hours. The breakfast mainly offers South-east Asian cuisine and nothing to write home about. The hotel is located in Station 3 but if you are a family or a want to get some sleep at night, I would recommend Station 1 or the end of Station 2 closer to Station 1. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this hotel. The money is better spent elsewhere.

Checked in nice and easy but soon discovered the "free WiFi" didn't reach our room on the 4th floor. It was Christmas so we wanted WiFi to stay in touch with family. No one seemed to want to help us with this and one employee was very rude. Our air conditioning dripped in the night and got fixed on our last day. The water went off on the last day too, and no explanation was given. The bar sold very few drinks and breakfast was always busy, maybe due to the time of year. It was nice and clean, but I am sure we could have stayed in better places for the price.

Some staff like reception staff are not friendly or smiling. It would be nice if they have a warm smiling faces not sulky. But the rest of the staff are polite and friendly. Pool area slippery dangerous, witness a kid slipped and hurt herself bleeding nose and lump on the head. Staff no clue how to give first aid. No incident report at all which is the management to take the necessary responsibility. No action except ice for the head that's it. Never reported to parents the incident. That's really bad. Room is smelly and leaking Aircondition. Food not bad. Buffet breakfast is limited choices. Building needs some upgrading and improvement. Overall I rate is 2 1/2 star. Please improve floor area on the pool. Make it anti slip flooring.

Room was ok for the price. Nice big bathroom. Terrible view. Hotel grounds a little dated but very clean. Staff was more than helpful and courteous. Bartenders were excellent. I made some good friends with the staff.

Hotel is situated right in front of the beach which is brilliant. Excellent staff. Very clean room and we’ll maintained pool. Food’s good but lacking fresh fruits. Some of the residents are quite noisy at times.

Air conditioning was not working well. Told the front desk. They said they checked it and it was ok. Room never made it to a comfortable level. Room was booked with a free dinner. Hotel only honored dinner for one night not the two nights booked. At checkout they tried to charge us for the dinner. We had to remind them. Room was noisy till 4:00 am. Hard to sleep.
