Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Getting to Manila, the country's capital, is a common journey for many Filipinos, whether for leisure, business, or visiting family. For those coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu, Davao, or Iloilo, flying is the most efficient option. Numerous airlines operate daily flights into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but expect prices to range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip.

For travelers coming from Luzon’s more distant provinces, bus travel is a popular and economical choice. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from Northern Luzon (like Baguio or Laoag) and Southern Luzon (like Bicol or Batangas). Bus fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, depending on the distance and the type of bus service (e.g., executive class). Travel times can be long, often ranging from 6 to 12 hours or more.

Driving to Manila is also an option for those in nearby provinces. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to the city. Be prepared for potential traffic congestion, especially as you approach the metropolitan area, and factor in toll fees, which can add up depending on your starting point.

Best Time to Visit Manila

Manila experiences a tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures and humidity year-round. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking pleasant weather is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you'll find lower humidity levels and less frequent rainfall, making it more comfortable for outdoor activities and exploring the city.

The cooler months within the dry season, specifically from November to February, are often considered ideal. Temperatures are slightly milder, and the skies are generally clear. This period coincides with the Christmas season, adding a festive atmosphere to the city with elaborate decorations and events. However, it's also peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season, from May to October, brings with it increased rainfall, often in the form of heavy, short-lived downpours, and occasional typhoons. While this season might deter some travelers, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for flights and hotels. If you don't mind occasional rain showers and are looking for a more budget-friendly trip, visiting during the wet season can still be a rewarding experience.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila is a culinary playground, offering a vast array of flavors that reflect its rich history and diverse influences. For any Filipino traveler, sampling iconic local dishes is a highlight of any visit. You absolutely must try Adobo, the unofficial national dish, a savory and tangy stew of meat (usually chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. It’s a comforting and familiar taste that varies slightly from household to household.

Another essential dish is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth, meat (pork, beef, or fish), and a medley of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The sourness is incredibly refreshing, especially in Manila’s warm climate. You’ll find excellent versions in local carinderias and restaurants across the city.

For those seeking something hearty, Kare-Kare is a must-try. This rich stew features oxtail, tripe, and vegetables in a thick, savory peanut sauce, traditionally served with bagoong (fermented shrimp paste) on the side. The combination of the creamy peanut sauce and the salty bagoong is a unique and delicious experience.

Don't leave Manila without trying Lechon, a whole roasted pig with incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, you can find Lechon stalls and restaurants serving it daily. The crispy skin alone is worth the indulgence. Exploring the local food scene is an adventure in itself, and Manila offers endless opportunities to discover these and many other Filipino culinary delights.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Manila, a friendly demeanor and a smile go a long way. It’s customary to show respect to elders, and using terms like "po" and "opo" (yes/no respectfully) is appreciated. While Manila is generally welcoming, it’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of pickpockets.

For safety, it’s advisable to avoid walking alone late at night in poorly lit or unfamiliar areas. Stick to well-trafficked streets and utilize reputable transportation services. In case of emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. Having the contact numbers for your embassy and your hotel readily accessible is also a good practice.

To enhance your travel experience in Manila, several apps can be incredibly useful. Grab is essential for booking rides (cars and taxis) and food delivery, offering convenience and transparent pricing. Waze or Google Maps are indispensable for navigation, helping you avoid traffic jams and find your way around the city’s complex road network. For communication, WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used for staying in touch.

I'm not a picky or finicky person so I'm gonna give my honest review in the perspective of one. I'm quite happy and satisfied with my whole stay, in terms of food, staff and service. Sure there are lapses (atleast in my room) like no hot water, only cold and colder. I know that the linens, sheets and towels are cleaned, washed and disinfected (as per my smell) but you can still see unremovable stains. I have no phone signal inside my room but wifi is OK. There are 2 outlets available, one for TV and one for your personal use. With all that being said, will I return? Yes, yes I will. For the price that I am paying and my basic comforts covered, I'd say it 's fine. I'm happy and would be happy to comeback here.

Wifi very slow, no trash can inside the room and there are insects in the wall which means not clean. The tv manual operated because the remote is defective. Not good to stay.

He was clean. Just enter the room smell cigarrette smoke. all are functioning well (hot / cold water, air conditioning, TV and telephone) and my switch on / off near the bed of all e-appliances. So if napasarap and lying down and sleepy. No need to get up to turn off everything. And since we backpacker. Also need to charge the phone. 2 cases are available. Ung TV one more stab the air. So you nd na lng tv. To use the outlet. Hopefully my extra outlet near the bed side table. Perfect for n and surprised / I laugh at that chair prang than 50 shades. Nd I wasted your pictures. Cute nun. Oh! And the location near LRT him. So very convinient. Scary just to walk the mdaling day. Quite dark and I like my artistic hohold up anytime. Buti na lang. Ok din ung loc. Many fast food near. Nd I love hungry here because the hotel order. Po ng out. Kembot just a little. He was ok for me.

It was a delightful stay. Unfortunately, not the hotel's fault, tho, but the WiFi isn't working 😅 But, all in all, it was okay! ❤️

It was alright. Not so fancy but not so cheap. The only problem was the shower. It must be broken, the heater only works at night.

The room itself is far different from what is shown in the ads as I selected the VIP room.

This hotel is very accessible to nearest landmarks, staffs are courteous, and a haven if you really need to stay in Manila for a couple of days.
