Your Travel Guide to Solana as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Solana from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Solana from Manila involves either flying or taking a bus. The quickest way is to book a flight to Tuguegarao Airport (TUG), the main gateway to Cagayan. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer flights, with fares typically ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip, depending on booking time and promotions. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. From Tuguegarao, you can take a van or bus to Solana, a journey of about 1 to 1.5 hours.

For a more budget-friendly option, consider taking a bus directly from Metro Manila (Cubao or Pasay terminals) to Tuguegarao or directly to Solana if available. Several bus lines like Victory Liner and Five Star operate this route. The travel time is considerably longer, usually between 10 to 12 hours. Bus fares typically range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,200 for a one-way trip. This option is best for those who don't mind a long journey and want to save on airfare.

If you are coming from other major cities in Luzon, you might need to travel to Manila first to catch a bus or flight. Alternatively, some regional bus routes might connect to Tuguegarao. Planning your trip in advance and checking schedules for both buses and flights is recommended. You can use Traveloka to book flight tickets and compare bus options for your journey.

Best Time to Visit Solana

The best time to visit Solana and the wider Cagayan region generally falls during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with lower chances of rain, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring attractions, and enjoying the local scenery. Temperatures can be warm, so packing light clothing and staying hydrated is essential.

The period from December to February is often considered the most pleasant, with cooler temperatures compared to the hotter months of March to May. However, this is also peak tourist season, so expect more crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and transport. For travelers seeking fewer crowds and potentially better deals, the shoulder months of November and late May can also be good options, though there's a slightly higher chance of occasional rain. The wet season, from June to October, brings more frequent rainfall and typhoons, which can disrupt travel plans.

Food and Dining Near Solana — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cagayan cuisine offers a delightful array of flavors that reflect its agricultural richness and cultural influences. When in Solana, be sure to try Pancit Batil Patong, a local specialty that goes beyond the usual pancit. It features thick noodles stir-fried with carabao meat, topped with a fried egg, and served with a side of broth. The combination of savory noodles and the rich broth is a true Filipino comfort food experience.

Another must-try is Dinakdakan, a dish often made from grilled pork parts like ears and liver, mixed with onions, vinegar, and chili peppers. It’s a flavorful and slightly spicy appetizer or pulutan that showcases the local palate. For those who enjoy seafood, the proximity to coastal areas means fresh catches are often available. Look for grilled fish or seafood dishes seasoned with local herbs and spices.

Don't forget to sample local delicacies and snacks. Many towns in Cagayan have their own versions of kakanin (rice cakes) or local sweets. Exploring local eateries, carinderias, and markets will give you the most authentic taste of Solana and its surrounding areas. Trying these dishes is a fundamental part of experiencing the local culture and supporting the community's food businesses.

For a more substantial meal, consider trying Sinigang na Kalabaw, a sour and savory soup made with carabao meat, which is a common alternative to pork or beef in the region. The tangy broth, usually flavored with tamarind, is perfect for a hearty meal. Exploring the local food scene is an adventure in itself, offering a delicious insight into the region's culinary heritage.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Solana

The people of Cagayan are known for their hospitality and strong sense of community. Filipinos generally value politeness and respect, so greeting locals with a smile and using polite language ("po" and "opo") goes a long way. When visiting churches or local homes, dress modestly. It's also customary to be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas and during nighttime.

Solana, like most places in the Philippines, is generally safe for tourists. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items unnecessarily. If you plan to travel at night, use reputable transportation services. For emergencies, know the local police hotline number, which can usually be obtained from your hotel or local information centers.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. If you're interested in local news or events, check for regional news apps or social media pages. Having a mobile banking app or e-wallet like GCash or Maya can also be very convenient for transactions.

Understanding basic Tagalog phrases can be helpful, although English and Ilocano are widely spoken in the region. Learning simple greetings like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) can be appreciated by locals. Being open to local customs and traditions will enrich your visit to Solana and the beautiful Cagayan province.

The staff were warm and accommodating, which I truly appreciated. However, during my stay, the room accommodation was disappointing and did not meet expectations. Instead of a proper comforter as advertised, only a thin blanket was provided, and the pillows were substandard and uncomfortable. The water pressure was very weak, and the surroundings were extremely noisy, with drilling going on during my stay. Overall, the amenities felt outdated, which significantly affected the quality and comfort of the experience.

I recently stayed at this hotel and gave it a 3/5 rating. The room itself was great—spacious, comfortable, and AC was great—but unfortunately, it wasn’t as clean as I would have expected. There were some areas that clearly needed attention, like cobwebs and dust. The sliding door to the balcony could not be opened unless you pry it open, and if you do indeed open it, it will take you a couple of minutes to close it back again. The real downside, however, was the parking situation. While the hotel offers self-parking, the lot was often full of business vehicles from other businesses in the lot (it was being shared by ~5 businesses) and didn’t have designated parking for hotel guests. To make matters worse, the parking attendant was rude and unhelpful, which was a frustrating experience. If the cleanliness and parking situation were improved, this could be a solid place to stay, but as it is, I can only rate it as average.

Small room, small washroom but large comfy beds. Aircon is fine, could be colder. Towels were terrible. Very clean rooms though no complaints on cleanliness. Had to pay extra for a roll away bed. Had to pay extra to check in 30 mins early. WiFi was good but only limited to one machine per person via some lame pieces of paper. TV is good. Can only have one keycard, not useful when you're staying as a family/large group. Lots of parking. Steps away from a mall and fast food. Things were under construction when we stayed, especially in the entrance. Didn't get to check out the pool.

Poor noise insulation. We can hear a lot of people walking, talking and laughing passing by our room. Other than that it was a good stay - comfortable beds. Staff are very accomodating.

The room was not clean, had an oader and there was no hot water. When I decided to leave the hotel they offered another room. It was cleaner than the previous room but still no hot water. The third room that they showed did have hot water. I did not stay at the hotel and I did not receive a refund. When leaving no help on carrying luggage out. Also no elivater so you have to use the stairs.

The hotel has a pool but the manangement won't allow guest from using it at night because there is no staff to take charge the filter. But anyway, i enjoyed the ambiance at their loan yard. My room may too small for all the single rooms i've tried before but it has complete ammenities and well equip bathroom.
