Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common and efficient method. Major airlines operate frequent flights from key cities like Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo to Manila. Fares can vary significantly, but booking in advance can secure flights for as low as PHP 2,000 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and airline. From NAIA, you can take a taxi, ride-sharing service, or the airport bus to reach Makati, a journey that typically costs between PHP 300 to PHP 500 and takes about 30-60 minutes. It's always a good idea to book flight tickets well in advance.

If you prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces, bus services are widely available. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from various regions. For instance, buses from Northern Luzon might arrive at terminals in Cubao or Pasay, while those from Southern Luzon often terminate in Buendia or Alabang. From these terminals, you can take a local bus, jeepney, or taxi to reach Makati. Bus fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, depending on the origin city and bus class.

Driving to Makati is also an option for those with their own vehicles. Major expressways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) connect to Metro Manila's road network, leading to Makati. Be prepared for potential traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, and factor in toll fees, which can add up depending on your starting point.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati experiences a tropical climate year-round, with two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, generally from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. Temperatures are warm, and rainfall is minimal, making it ideal for walking around, visiting outdoor attractions, and enjoying the city's vibrant street life.

The peak tourist season typically falls within the dry months, especially around the Christmas holidays and Holy Week. During this time, expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially better deals, consider visiting during the shoulder months of the dry season, such as November or February.

The wet season runs from May to October. While this period is characterized by frequent rain showers, they are often short-lived and usually occur in the afternoon. The rain can bring a refreshing coolness to the city, and you might find fewer tourists and more competitive rates for hotels and flights. It's still entirely possible to enjoy Makati during these months by planning indoor activities and being prepared for occasional downpours.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Makati offers a culinary landscape that reflects the Philippines' diverse gastronomic heritage. When you're in the area, make sure to try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households and restaurants alike. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries around Makati.

Another dish that captures the Filipino palate is Sinigang. This sour and savory soup, often made with tamarind broth, features a variety of meats like pork, beef, or fish, along with an assortment of vegetables such as kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. Its comforting warmth and distinct sourness make it a beloved dish, especially on cooler evenings.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, Lechon is a must-try. This whole roasted pig, with its incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat, is a celebratory dish often found at gatherings and special occasions. While a whole lechon might be too much for a solo traveler, many restaurants offer lechon kawali (deep-fried pork belly) or lechon baka (roasted beef) as delicious alternatives.

Don't leave without sampling Halo-Halo for dessert. This popular Filipino treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's a refreshing and visually appealing dessert that perfectly caps off any Filipino meal. You can find these dishes and more in various restaurants and food stalls throughout Makati.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders and a generally amiable demeanor are highly valued. While Makati is a modern city, understanding basic Filipino customs will enhance your interactions.

When it comes to safety, Makati is generally considered one of the safer cities in Metro Manila, especially in well-trafficked areas like the central business district and shopping centers. However, it's always wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places, and to secure your belongings. Avoid displaying expensive items openly and be cautious of unsolicited offers or overly friendly strangers.

For emergencies, the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. It's also helpful to have the contact details for your hotel and the local police precinct readily available. Staying informed about current events and any advisories issued by local authorities can also contribute to a safer trip.

To navigate and enhance your stay, consider downloading a few essential apps. Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city and checking traffic conditions. Grab is the go-to app for ride-sharing and food delivery, offering a convenient way to travel and dine. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by Filipinos.

The hotel itself looks very nice from the outside and lobby. Room 101 is no too amazing because there is no sound barrier from the room to reception, you can hear people opening the door to and from reception and to the lobby and also hear people talking very easily. There is also no window in the room so it feel like a cave but the room was very clean and comfy beyond those issues.

Hotel Durban is located very close to Filling Station, restaurants, nightlife and bars with famous P.Burgos street just around the corner. The hotel is modern and stylish, the staff welcoming and helpfull. Lobby is relaxing and modern design, with a outside terrace with high table and small tables for waiting and relaxing. Rooms are nice and cosy, good bed and a couch, also safety deposit box in good quality. The bathroom was clean, stylish and good equipment. Toilet has build in bedet like the japanese style version. I can recommend this hotel, price was good on hotels.com.

Great location and price on website. Great place for foreigners and USA travelers. Lots of great restaurants and bars and supermarket and mall all within walking distance. Would definitely stay here again for this price point.

Staff are quick, polite. Internet is non existent. Management is aware. “ we will fix it”. Starbucks just in the corner. Also macdonalds and 7-eleven, Lawson. No dining in the facility itself but surrounded with lots of good restaurants around it. Room cold, water pressure is excellent. Very clean. Looks newly renovated. Very cheap. Money changers are great down stairs. Will come back.

The staff don’t read explicit notes about the details of the specific request (e.g. room next to elevator, queen bed not double and single bed, etc). The wifi is terrible only reaching 0.6 mbps ave. And worst will dc you. The pillows were too stuffed and stiffed.
