The bathroom was not very clean. There was mildew around the sink and on shower head. The staff immediately addressed the situation. They assigned me another room which was much cleaner. They went out of their way to make sure I had an enjoyable stay. I will stay there the next time I’m in Tacloban City.

Your Travel Guide to Tacloban City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Tacloban City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers planning a trip to Tacloban City, reaching Leyte's capital is most commonly done via air travel from Manila, Cebu, or Davao. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate regular flights to Daniel Z Romualdez Airport (TAC) in Tacloban. From Manila, flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares often ranging from approximately PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on booking time and season.

Flights from Cebu are shorter, about 45 minutes, and can be more budget-friendly, sometimes found for as low as PHP 1,500 to PHP 4,000 round trip. Booking your book flight in advance is highly recommended to secure better prices and ensure availability, especially during holidays and peak travel periods.

While flights are the quickest option, land and sea travel are also viable, though significantly longer. From Manila, you can take a bus that travels directly to Tacloban, a journey that spans over 24 hours and typically costs between PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500 for a one-way ticket. This option is best suited for those who prefer to see the country unfold or are on a very tight budget.

Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Manila to Tacloban, which also takes a considerable amount of time, often over 30 hours. Bus routes from other Visayas cities like Cebu are also available, usually involving a ferry crossing to Leyte and then a bus ride to Tacloban.

For those who enjoy road trips and have ample time, driving to Tacloban is possible, though it involves extensive travel. From Luzon, this would mean navigating through various islands via ferry crossings. The journey from Manila can take several days, depending on the routes taken and ferry schedules. Major highways like the Pan-Philippine Highway are your primary routes. While toll fees and fuel costs can add up, this offers the ultimate freedom to explore along the way.

However, for most travelers, especially those coming from distant cities, flying remains the most practical and time-efficient method to reach Tacloban City.

Best Time to Visit Tacloban City

Tacloban City experiences a tropical climate, characterized by warm temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking pleasant weather is generally during the dry season, which typically runs from December to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring historical sites, and enjoying the coastal areas.

The months of March, April, and May are particularly warm and sunny, perfect for those who enjoy beach weather, though it can get quite hot.

The wet season, from June to November, brings a higher chance of rainfall, which can range from brief, heavy downpours to prolonged periods of rain. This season is also when typhoons are more likely to occur in the Philippines, and Tacloban, being on the eastern coast, can be directly affected. However, visiting during the wet season can offer a different perspective, with fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices.

If you choose to travel during this period, it's crucial to stay updated on weather forecasts and be prepared for potential travel disruptions. For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the shoulder months of December and January, or the period between February and May, are often recommended.

Food and Dining Near Tacloban City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Tacloban City, and Leyte in general, offers a distinct culinary landscape that reflects its coastal location and cultural influences. One dish you absolutely must try is **Kinilaw na Tanigue**. This is the local take on ceviche, where fresh tanigue (Spanish mackerel) is "cooked" in vinegar, often with ginger, onions, chili, and sometimes coconut milk for a creamy twist.

The tanginess of the vinegar cuts through the richness of the fish, creating a refreshing appetizer or light meal that is a staple in the region. You'll find excellent versions in local eateries and even some higher-end restaurants.

Another local specialty that showcases Leyte's bounty is **Binagol**. This is a unique dessert made from taro (gabi), sweetened with sugar and coconut milk, and enriched with crushed peanuts or cashews. It's traditionally steamed inside a young coconut shell or banana leaves, giving it a distinct earthy flavor and a dense, pudding-like texture. The combination of creamy, sweet, and slightly savory notes makes Binagol a truly local delicacy that offers a different kind of sweetness compared to typical Filipino desserts.

Look for it in local markets or specialty food shops.

For those who enjoy seafood, **Pancit Maruyog** is a must-try. This is a local noodle dish that is distinct from other pancit variations. It features a rich, savory broth, often thickened slightly, and is loaded with fresh seafood like shrimp, squid, and fish, along with vegetables. The flavor is deep and satisfying, making it a hearty meal that highlights the freshness of the ingredients sourced from the surrounding waters.

It’s a comforting and flavorful dish that represents the everyday cuisine of Tacloban.

Don't leave Tacloban without trying **Sutukil**, which is not a single dish but a cooking method. It stands for Sugba (grill), Tuwa (stew/soup), and Kilaw (raw in vinegar). Many restaurants offer a Sutukil experience where you can choose your fresh seafood—fish, prawns, squid—and have it prepared according to your preference: grilled to perfection, simmered in a flavorful broth, or served fresh in a tangy kinilaw.

This allows you to sample the same fresh catch in three different delicious ways, offering a comprehensive taste of the local seafood.

When exploring dining options, consider visiting local carinderias and restaurants in downtown Tacloban. Many establishments near Hotel Estrella will offer these regional specialties. For a more curated experience, ask locals for recommendations on where to find the best Kinilaw or Binagol. Trying these dishes is an integral part of experiencing the culture and flavors of Leyte.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Tacloban City

Tacloban City is known for the resilience and warmth of its people, particularly in the wake of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Visitors will find a community that is rebuilding and moving forward with strong cultural roots. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) in Waray, the local dialect, is always appreciated, though Tagalog and English are widely understood.

Respect for elders and religious sites is paramount; dress modestly when visiting churches or shrines. Tacloban also hosts the annual Pintados Festival in June, celebrating the region's indigenous heritage with vibrant street dances and cultural presentations.

Safety in Tacloban City is generally comparable to other urban centers in the Philippines. Standard precautions should be taken: be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. Avoid displaying expensive items openly and keep your valuables secure. It's advisable to use reputable transportation services, such as taxis hailed from your hotel or designated stands, or ride-sharing apps.

For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 117, and it's wise to have the contact number for Hotel Estrella's front desk readily available. The city has made significant strides in recovery, and visitors will find a welcoming and increasingly secure environment.

To enhance your travel experience in Tacloban City, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around the city and locating attractions, restaurants, and your hotel. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. If you plan on booking local tours or need transportation, apps that facilitate these services can be very useful.

Having a currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget. Lastly, a weather app is crucial, especially if you are traveling during the wet season, to stay informed about any potential weather changes that might affect your plans.

Definitely my choice of hotel the next time I spend another staycation in Tacloban. No mosquitos and unidentified flying insects inside my room as compared to my first choice of hotel through traveloka. Complete with bath towels, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, slippers, coffee, bottled water, cable TV, wifi, buffet breakfast, very accommodating receptionist. Very well informed! Kudos to the lady receptionist! Very patient answering all my queries since it was my first time in Tacloban. The hotel location is very near the Sto. Nino church, just a walking distance also to Mcdonalds Real branch. Robinsons Marasbaras branch is a ride away through multicab with signage Robinsons. No taxis in Tacloban, options are just tricycle, jeepneys/multicabs/small buses. The hotel also allowed me to extend an hour more free of charge. Beyond that the hotel will charge guest Php500 for a day's extension. Just a suggestion is to add danggit to their buffet choices of food because it is a province so native delicacies such as danggit is a very nice inclusion. Thank you so much for the accommodation.

Delicious breakfast! But it takes time for the toilet bowl to flush.

We loved the breakfast buffet. Although, it was a bit annoying that the reception keeps on calling starting 11am to remind us of our check-out time. I mean, we already know that. But all in all, the room was nice and clean, same with the restroom.

Staff was very accommodating and my father did not have a hard time checking in. The food though, he said, was quite expensive for the quality/taste. But everything else was great. He was happy with the stay.

Breakfast buffet with limited food. Room was not cleaned when we arrived, there were used plastic bottles on the table drawer and bad smell on the hallway. Good place to stay if you just want to sleep after a whole day of tour in the city.
