Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular route for many Filipinos, and several options are available. The most common way is by bus, with numerous companies like Victory Liner and Genesis Transport operating daily trips. Buses depart from terminals in Cubao and Pasay, with travel time typically ranging from 6 to 8 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Fares usually fall between PHP 700 to PHP 1,000 for regular or executive seats.

For those who prefer a quicker journey, booking a flight to Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga is an option, followed by a bus or van transfer to Baguio. While there are no direct flights to Baguio's own Loakan Airport, this indirect route can sometimes be faster. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer flights to Clark from various domestic destinations. Remember to book your flight early for the best prices.

Driving to Baguio City is also a viable option for those with their own vehicles. The primary route is via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), leading to the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX). From TPLEX, you will take the exit towards Baguio City, navigating through scenic mountain roads. Toll fees can add up, so factor this into your budget.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a pleasant, cool climate year-round, making it a favored destination regardless of the season. However, the peak tourist season generally runs from November to May, coinciding with the dry season and holidays. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and cool, perfect for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. Expect higher hotel rates and larger crowds, especially during Christmas, New Year, and the Panagbenga Festival in February.

For a more relaxed and budget-friendly visit, consider traveling during the off-peak season, which is from June to October. This period marks the rainy season in Baguio, so you can expect frequent rainfall. However, the rain often brings a dramatic beauty to the landscape, and the cooler temperatures can be quite invigorating. You'll also find fewer tourists and potentially lower prices for accommodation and flights.

If you enjoy festivals, the Panagbenga Festival in February is a major highlight, featuring colorful parades of flower floats and street dancing. For a more serene experience, visiting during the shoulder months like May or November can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Baguio City offers a refreshing escape for Filipino travelers.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is a culinary delight, offering a range of flavors that reflect its unique culture and produce. A must-try is the Baguio Strawberry, famous for its sweetness and vibrant red color. Enjoy them fresh, in strawberry taho, or as part of delicious strawberry shortcake and ice cream. Many stalls and cafes around the city offer these strawberry-infused treats.

Another local specialty is the Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish. This dish involves a unique preparation method where the meat is lightly beaten to bring out its flavor and tenderness, then stewed with vegetables like etag (smoked pork) and native greens. Its rich, savory taste is a true representation of highland cuisine.

For those who enjoy hearty meals, the local version of sinigang, often made with pork or beef and local vegetables, is a comforting choice. The cool climate of Baguio makes a hot, sour soup particularly satisfying. You can find excellent sinigang in many local eateries and restaurants throughout the city.

Don't leave Baguio without trying their Ube Jam. While available elsewhere, Baguio's version is often praised for its rich flavor and creamy texture. It makes for a perfect pasalubong (souvenir) for friends and family back home. Many local bakeries and souvenir shops offer this delightful spread.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and a culture that blends indigenous Cordilleran traditions with modern influences. When interacting with residents, a polite demeanor and respectful attitude go a long way. Learning a few basic phrases in Ilocano or Kankanaey can be appreciated, though English and Tagalog are widely understood. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Safety is generally good in Baguio, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the local police hotline is 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact numbers of your hotel and local transportation services readily available.

For navigating the city and staying informed, several apps can be very useful. Google Maps is essential for directions and finding points of interest. Ride-hailing apps can be used for convenient transport, though local jeepneys and taxis are also readily available and affordable. Weather apps are helpful for keeping track of Baguio's famously changeable mountain weather.

Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may speak different dialects. Having offline maps downloaded can also be a lifesaver if mobile data becomes spotty. These tools can significantly enhance your travel experience, making it easier to get around and enjoy all that Baguio City has to offer.

Cons: 1. No toothpaste and toothbrush provided. 2. No complimentary water or snacks. You have to pay for water or coffee. 3. TV automatically turns off after 10mins so you have to turn it on every 10mins. 4. Road is being constructed so you need to walk. Not friendly when it is raining hard or if you don't have umbrella. 5. Bed linens are a little bit dirty. 6. Some towels are torn. 7. Shampoo and bath soap are not replenished daily. Pros: 1. Breakfast is delish. 2. Serene environment.

The bed assigned to us has mould and I know that it is a healthy and safety hazard for the guests. During our stay in the hotel for one night, I've seen and killed three cockroaches. Beds were comfy? Or me and companion were just too tired to complain. It is the worst hotel room I've ever stayed at.

perfect for budgetarians.. room is cozy and clean.. hotel is quiet.. have free tissue, soaps and shampoos but has only 1 pair of slippers.. please make it 2 pairs..unli coffee is awesome.. I booked this through app and it's cheaper than walk in. free breakfast tastes good but that time tocino and corned beef were not available. it's quite near burnham but when you go back to the hotel, it's tiring because the place is a bit high.so whenever we go back to our hotel, we ride on a taxi. hot water is already set.. comfort room is also nice. we were in standard room for 2 in 2nd floor. staff are helpful and informative. they helped us find a restaurant which delivers food at 2am. overall it was a fantastic stay.. God bless..

The room was good for the budget friendly price. Breakfast was delicious and the location was also good. However, the room lacked maintenance. The toilet flush was not working properly. We complained but they just told us to the pail for the flush to be faster. We had to use the common bathroom in the lobby to poop.

Even if the place is too far from Burnham, it's great because of the free breakfast.

Hotel location was OK. But the infrastracture was not maintained. Big rats running everywhere. Reception area does not smell good. Functioning bathroom not functioning well.

The staff is very accommodating, very close to Burnham, SM and Different tourist spots, very accessible, a good place to stay and at the same time super affordable plus with free breakfast during your stay 😉.

I had the most pleasant stay here, Staff: We got caught up by traffic so we checked in late also needed assistance while checking out, but everything went smoothly and the receptionists were really nice! Hotel: The hotel itself was okay, and the location was definitely a big plus! It was only 5 mins away from sm baguio, Burnham Park, Night market, etc. Price: I consider it to be a great deal! Will definitely come back! 🥰.
