Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular choice for many Filipinos seeking a cooler climate. The most common and convenient way is by bus. Numerous bus companies, including Victory Liner and Genesis Transport, operate daily trips from Metro Manila terminals like Cubao and Pasay. Bus fares typically range from PHP 700 to PHP 1,200, with travel time averaging between 6 to 8 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

For those who prefer to fly, the nearest airport with commercial flights is Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga, which is about a 3-4 hour drive from Baguio. Alternatively, you can fly into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) in Manila. From either airport, you can then take a bus to Baguio. Using Traveloka to book flight tickets in advance can often secure better prices.

Driving to Baguio is also an option for those with their own vehicles. The journey from Manila typically takes around 4 to 6 hours via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), then continuing onto the TPLEx and Marcos Highway or Kennon Road. Be prepared for winding roads as you ascend into the city.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a generally cool climate year-round, but the best time to visit depends on your preferences. The dry season, from November to May, offers the most pleasant weather, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 23 degrees Celsius. This period, especially December to February, is considered peak season due to the holidays and the Panagbenga Festival, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices.

The cool, dry months are ideal for exploring the city's parks, gardens, and outdoor attractions. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or March. The weather is still favorable, and you can enjoy Baguio's charm with a more relaxed atmosphere.

The wet season, from June to October, brings frequent rainfall, which can be heavy at times. While this period is less crowded and offers lush, green scenery, outdoor activities might be limited. However, if you don't mind occasional rain and enjoy the misty ambiance, this can be a good time for a more tranquil visit. Always check the weather forecast before your trip.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City offers a delightful culinary scene, blending local Cordillera flavors with popular Filipino dishes. A must-try is the Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordillera dish made with chicken or pork, often prepared by beating the meat to draw out blood, which gives it a distinct flavor and color. It's a hearty and savory experience.

Another local specialty is the Strawberry Taho, a variation of the classic silken tofu dessert. Baguio is famous for its strawberries, and this treat combines the soft tofu with fresh strawberry syrup and sago pearls, offering a sweet and refreshing taste that's perfect for the cool weather. You can find vendors selling this throughout the city.

For those who enjoy savory snacks, try the Ube Kinampay, a purple yam jam that is a staple in the region. It's often served with pandesal or as a filling. Also, don't leave Baguio without sampling their famous Ube Ice Cream and Strawberry Ice Cream, which are made with fresh, local ingredients and offer a delightful creamy texture.

When exploring Baguio, be sure to try the local corn on the cob, often grilled or boiled and seasoned with salt and chili powder. It's a simple yet delicious snack that captures the essence of Baguio's agricultural bounty. Many local eateries and street vendors offer these authentic tastes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and rich cultural heritage, particularly the indigenous Igorot people. When interacting with residents, politeness and respect are appreciated. Learning a few basic Filipino phrases can also enhance your interactions. The city is generally safe, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places.

Keep your belongings secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's also recommended to stick to well-lit and populated areas, particularly at night. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911. Familiarize yourself with the hotel's emergency procedures and contact information.

For seamless travel, consider downloading essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-hailing apps can be useful for transportation, though taxis are also readily available. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used by Filipinos.

To enhance your trip planning and booking experience, ensure you have the Traveloka app installed. It allows you to easily search for accommodations, flights, and activities, and manage your bookings on the go. This app is a valuable tool for any Filipino traveler looking for convenience and great deals.

The place was under renovation. I think there are only 3 staffs assisting the clients. I can say that not all the clients are assisted very well because of the few staffs. We expected very nice breakfast but it was disappointing. They said that their cook was not able to come because of the typhoon.

The place was under renovation. I think there are only 3 staffs assisting the clients. I can say that not all the clients are assisted very well because of the few staffs. We expected very nice breakfast but it was disappointing. They said that their cook was not able to come because of the typhoon.
