Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers planning a trip to Makati, the primary gateway is Manila, with its extensive transportation network. If you are coming from within Metro Manila, various options are available. Public transport is the most economical, with jeepneys and buses plying routes that pass through or near Makati. For instance, routes heading towards Ayala Avenue or Buendia (now Gil Puyat Avenue) will bring you close to the city center.

The MRT and LRT systems also serve parts of Metro Manila, with stations like Ayala and Buendia on the MRT line offering access to Makati. A typical bus or jeepney ride within Metro Manila can cost anywhere from PHP 15 to PHP 50, depending on the distance.

If you are traveling from other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Davao, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most practical option. Airlines such as Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer numerous daily flights from these cities to Manila.

Flight prices can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect fares to range from approximately PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip if booked in advance. From NAIA, you can then take a taxi, a ride-sharing service, or public transport to reach Makati. To secure the best fares, it is advisable to book flight tickets well in advance.

For those who prefer land travel from distant provinces, inter-provincial bus terminals are located in various parts of Metro Manila, such as Cubao and Pasay. Buses from Northern Luzon or Southern Luzon often terminate at these hubs. From these terminals, you can take another bus or jeepney route that leads to Makati. Bus journeys can be long, often spanning several hours, and fares typically range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 for longer routes.

Driving your own vehicle is also an option, with major expressways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connecting to Metro Manila and providing access to Makati. Toll fees will apply, and travel time can vary greatly depending on traffic, especially during peak hours.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season generally runs from November to April, offering the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity levels compared to the wet season. Temperatures typically range from the mid-20s to low-30s Celsius.

This period is considered the peak tourist season, meaning attractions might be more crowded, and accommodation prices could be slightly higher. However, the reliable weather makes it ideal for outdoor activities, shopping, and enjoying the city's many offerings without the interruption of heavy rainfall.

The wet season typically spans from May to October. During this time, expect frequent rainfall, which can range from short, intense downpours to prolonged periods of rain. While the rain can sometimes disrupt outdoor plans, it also brings cooler temperatures and a lushness to the surrounding environment. This season is often considered the off-peak period for tourism, which can translate to fewer crowds at popular spots and potentially more competitive rates for hotels and flights.

For travelers who don't mind occasional rain and are looking for a more relaxed pace and potentially better deals, the wet season can be a good time to visit. Itโ€™s also a great time to focus on indoor activities like visiting museums, art galleries, and enjoying the extensive dining and shopping options within Makati.

For most Filipino travelers seeking a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the shoulder months of November and February to April are often recommended. These periods fall within the dry season but may offer slightly fewer crowds than the absolute peak months of December and January. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Makati is a city that offers a dynamic experience year-round, with plenty to see and do regardless of the weather.

Food and Dining Near Makati โ€” What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Makati's culinary landscape is a reflection of the Philippines' diverse gastronomic heritage, offering everything from traditional comfort food to international flavors. For any Filipino traveler, a visit to this area wouldn't be complete without indulging in **Adobo**. While variations exist across the archipelago, Makati's restaurants and eateries often serve a well-executed version, typically chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns.

Look for establishments that offer a slightly crispy texture or a rich, savory sauce thatโ€™s perfect for spooning over steamed rice. Many local eateries and even some higher-end restaurants will feature this national dish.

Another dish that embodies Filipino home cooking and is widely available is **Sinigang**. This sour and savory soup, usually made with tamarind broth, is a comforting and flavorful experience. Whether itโ€™s pork, beef, shrimp, or fish sinigang, the tartness is balanced by the tender meat and fresh vegetables like kangkong (water spinach), radish, and tomatoes. The warmth and tanginess of a good sinigang are particularly satisfying, especially on a cooler evening or after a long day.

Many carinderias (small local eateries) and family-style restaurants in and around Makati serve excellent versions of this beloved soup.

For those seeking something a bit more celebratory or a taste of Filipino barbecue culture, **Lechon** is a must-try. While a whole roasted pig is a centerpiece for special occasions, many restaurants offer lechon as liempo (belly) or kawali (fried pork belly), both of which are incredibly popular. The crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat are irresistible.

You can find excellent lechon dishes in specialized restaurants or even in food courts within Makati's malls, offering a delicious and indulgent Filipino treat.

Don't leave Makati without trying **Halo-Halo**, a fitting choice for Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube (purple yam) ice cream is a refreshing and delightful way to end a meal. Itโ€™s a perfect antidote to the tropical heat and offers a delightful mix of textures and sweet flavors.

Many cafes and dessert shops in Makati serve their own unique versions, so be sure to sample a few to find your favorite. Exploring these dishes offers a genuine taste of Filipino culture and hospitality.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture in Makati, while influenced by its cosmopolitan nature, retains strong elements of hospitality and respect. Greetings are important; a simple "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) goes a long way. When interacting with locals, politeness and a friendly demeanor are highly valued. While Makati is generally a safe city, especially in its commercial and business districts, it's always wise to exercise caution, particularly in crowded areas or when using public transportation.

Be aware of your surroundings, keep your valuables secure, and avoid displaying expensive items openly.

For safety, it's advisable to stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night. If you are using taxis or ride-sharing services, ensure the driver is legitimate and the meter is used correctly. For emergencies, the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. Local police hotlines can also be found through quick online searches. When exploring, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area, itโ€™s helpful to have a map or a reliable navigation app.

The hotel staff at Hotel Merlo can also provide guidance on safe routes and areas to visit.

To enhance your travel experience in Makati, several mobile applications can be incredibly useful. For navigation, **Google Maps** is indispensable for finding directions, estimating travel times, and locating points of interest. For transportation, apps like **Grab** (for ride-sharing and food delivery) are widely used and offer a convenient way to get around the city and order meals. For communication, **Viber** and **WhatsApp** are popular among Filipinos for messaging and calls.

Having these apps installed on your smartphone will make navigating Makati much smoother and more efficient, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip.

1. Arrived at the hotel past 2pm but they were still cleaning the room assigned to me. I was only able to check in at 2:45pm. Worse is that the receptionist only asked for my ID and to fill up some forms when she handed me the key to my room. She could have done that while I'm still waiting for the housekeepers to finish the cleanup. 2. When I went to my room, there are still 2 housekeepers cleaning it. So I have to stand in one of the corners for about 10 minutes waiting for them to finish. They left with the floor still wet and smelling with clorox/zonrox. I have to open the door for several minutes to get rid of the smell and dry the floor. 3. I actually booked for a standard double room, which should have one queen size bed based on the photos the hotel posted online. But for the room assigned to me, they put two single beds beside each other and covered it up with one large bedding/duvet. (See photo) I wasn't able to maximize the size of the bed since it was really uncomfortable lying at the center where the edges of the 2 single beds were joined.
