Great place to stay at Dumaguete. Walking distance from famous Rizal boulevard. Near at Sansrival Bistro and every restaurant. Room was big and clean. Every day they cleaned the room and changed the towels and bedding which is good for a traveller. Also a free coffee everyday. Plus the hot and cold water is also free.

The rooms were as described, and true to the pictures. The staff were friendly and accommodating heads up if you enjoy a little drink at night, probably not the hotel for you as they have a no drinking policy. The surrounding area was close to everything you need.

Your Travel Guide to Dumaguete, Negros Oriental as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dumaguete from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Dumaguete City from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Sibulan Airport (DGT) serves Dumaguete and is serviced by several local airlines. Flights from Manila typically take around 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options can often be found, especially during off-peak periods.

For travelers coming from Visayas and Mindanao, direct flights might also be available to Dumaguete. If not, you can fly into nearby hubs like Cebu or Iloilo and then take a connecting flight or a ferry to Dumaguete. Ferry services are also an option for those coming from other islands, offering a more scenic but longer journey. For instance, ferries from Cebu to Dumaguete operate regularly and can take several hours.

While less common for long distances, bus travel is an option for those within Negros Oriental or nearby provinces. Buses depart from various terminals and can be a more economical choice, though significantly longer. For example, a bus journey from Bacolod City to Dumaguete can take approximately 5-6 hours. Driving your own vehicle is also possible, with major highways connecting different parts of Negros Oriental to Dumaguete, but be prepared for long driving hours and potential toll fees.

Best Time to Visit Dumaguete

The best time to visit Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower chances of rain, making it ideal for outdoor activities, island hopping, and exploring the city's attractions. The weather is generally pleasant, with temperatures ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius.

The period between December and February is often considered the peak tourist season due to the cooler weather and holiday festivities. While the weather is excellent, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. For a balance of good weather and fewer tourists, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November, March, or April. These times still offer favorable conditions for enjoying Dumaguete and its surroundings without the peak season rush.

The wet season, from June to October, brings more frequent rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy and prolonged. While this period might see fewer tourists and lower prices, it can disrupt outdoor plans, especially for activities like diving or visiting Apo Island. However, if you don't mind occasional rain showers and are looking for a more budget-friendly trip, the wet season can still be a viable option, provided you remain flexible with your itinerary.

Food and Dining Near Dumaguete — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Dumaguete, known for its relaxed atmosphere, also offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects its local flavors and influences. A must-try dish is the "Kinilaw," a Filipino ceviche made with fresh raw fish (often tuna or tanigue) marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the coastal essence of the region. You can find excellent versions at local eateries along Rizal Boulevard.

Another local specialty is "Sutukil," which is a combination of three cooking methods: Sugba (grill), Tuwa (stew), or Kilaw (ceviche). Many restaurants in Dumaguete offer Sutukil platters, allowing you to sample fresh seafood prepared in these distinct ways. This is a fantastic way to experience the variety of local seafood and cooking styles. Look for restaurants that highlight fresh, locally sourced catches for the best experience.

Don't leave Dumaguete without trying "Halo-Halo," a fitting choice for Filipino dessert. While available nationwide, Dumaguete offers its own delightful renditions. This shaved ice concoction is layered with sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, ube halaya, and topped with milk and ice cream. It's the perfect cool treat to beat the tropical heat. Many local carinderias and cafes serve this popular dessert.

For those seeking something more substantial, explore the local "Silog" meals, which are rice and egg combinations named after the Filipino words for garlic fried rice (sinangag) and egg (itlog). Popular variations include Tapsilog (tapa), Tocilog (tocino), and Longsilog (longganisa). These are typically served for breakfast but are enjoyed any time of day. Many small eateries and even Hotel Nicanor's restaurant will offer these satisfying meals.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Dumaguete

Dumaguete is celebrated for its "City of Gentle People" moniker, reflecting the warm and hospitable nature of its residents. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a friendly smile go a long way. Respect local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches or more traditional establishments. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially in more rural or traditional settings.

Safety in Dumaguete is generally good, with the city being considered one of the safer urban centers in the Philippines. However, as with any travel, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911, and it's advisable to have the contact details of your hotel readily accessible.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around the city and locating attractions. Ride-hailing apps or local transport apps can be useful for getting around, though taxis are also readily available. A translation app might be helpful if you plan to venture into more remote areas where English might not be as widely spoken, though in Dumaguete, English is commonly understood.

Familiarize yourself with local currency, the Philippine Peso (PHP). While credit cards are accepted in larger establishments and hotels, carrying some cash is essential for smaller shops, local markets, and transportation. ATMs are widely available throughout Dumaguete. Understanding basic Filipino phrases can also enhance your interactions and show respect for the local culture.

The rooms were as described, and true to the pictures. The staff were friendly and accommodating heads up if you enjoy a little drink at night, probably not the hotel for you as they have a no drinking policy. The surrounding area was close to everything you need.

Everything and all a round gets a 5 star, not because its a real expansive and super nice place. But people and rooms were overall pretty nice. Only thing is trying to check out. They will try to find the smallest details to try to charge you. My suggestion is dont get any blankets, towels dirty. Or you will get charged before checking out.

My Filipina girlfriend and her family were treated very poorly. When she checked out on the 24th of April, four staff members went to the two rooms we had rented. She was accused of taking a hair dryer but it was there in the room. She was threatened with being charged an extra 1000 pesos for eating in their room when there was not a mess. The staff went to her sister's room and found a broken shower hose that had been broken when she arrived and she was charged 1000 pesos. Her and her family was delayed an hour at the front desk while there rooms were inspected. She was treated rudely and without cause. I am an American and I cannot help but think that the hotel staff would not have been this rude to a foreigner. The poor treatment by the hotel staff caused me to cancel our reservation on the 24th of May. I would not recommend this hotel to any foreigner who has a Filipina in their life. The hotel staff seemed to go out of their way to abscond monies that probably would have gone into their pockets. Be very careful if you stay here so that you do not have to endure the rudeness that my companion had to.

No hair dryer which is a standard in any hotel room. Need to pay to use for 5 hours. So weird. Room service is terrible. Almost everything in the menu is not available.

It is in the heart of everything. A 3 minutes walk to the boulevard. Restaurants and malls are very close by that is why i keep coming back.

The rooms were as described, and true to the pictures. The staff were friendly and accommodating heads up if you enjoy a little drink at night, probably not the hotel for you as they have a no drinking policy. The surrounding area was close to everything you need.

First room wecgot was inside ( no windows) we paid extra to get one with windows. It should be mentioned while booking; we might have looked elsewhere.

Staff was good. We had to buy an upgrade to get a room with a window; i do wish it was stated wether a room is inside or exterior.

Room is clean but wish it comes with heavier blanket. They give u a sheet and you pay additional for heavier blanket. Overall it is a good stay. I like the location.

Its a budget hotel for solo travelers. I always stay at this hotel for the location, primarily. And the staff are great, always accommodating.
