Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the most common method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights from key cities such as Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book your flight.

From NAIA, you can take a taxi or a ride-sharing service directly to Makati. The journey typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, with costs ranging from PHP 300 to PHP 500, depending on traffic. Alternatively, you can take an airport bus service to a point in Makati and then a short taxi or jeepney ride to your specific destination.

If you are traveling from Luzon provinces outside Metro Manila, bus travel is a viable and economical option. Major bus terminals in Cubao, Pasay, and Taft Avenue serve routes to various provincial destinations. For those coming from the south, buses heading to Metro Manila will pass through or terminate in areas accessible to Makati. Bus fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500 for a one-way trip, depending on the origin city.

Driving to Makati is also an option for those coming from nearby provinces. Major expressways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) connect to Metro Manila's road network. You will need to navigate through the city's streets, using GPS or navigation apps to reach your destination. Toll fees can add up, so factor this into your travel budget.

Best Time to Visit Makati

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Makati is no exception. The dry season, generally from November to April, is considered the most pleasant time to visit. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and shopping areas. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 32°C.

The wet season runs from May to October, characterized by higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon showers. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower hotel rates, it's advisable to carry an umbrella and waterproof gear. Despite the rain, many indoor activities and shopping malls remain fully accessible, allowing for continued exploration.

For Filipino travelers looking to avoid the largest crowds and potentially find better deals on accommodation and flights, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as late October or early November, or February and March. These periods often offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer tourists compared to the peak holiday season.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No visit to the Philippines is complete without savoring Adobo, the national dish. This savory stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, offers a comforting and familiar taste. Many restaurants in Makati serve their own versions, from traditional to contemporary twists. Look for establishments that highlight slow-cooking methods for tender meat.

Another Filipino favorite you must try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, usually made with tamarind broth, meat (pork, beef, or fish), and a variety of vegetables. Its distinct tangy flavor is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. Restaurants offering authentic Filipino cuisine will often feature Sinigang on their menu, providing a comforting taste of home or a new culinary adventure.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is a characteristic Filipino dessert that you cannot miss. This popular shaved ice concoction is layered with sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and topped with ube ice cream. It’s a delightful and visually appealing treat that offers a burst of flavors and textures, perfect for cooling down after a day of sightseeing.

Lechon, a whole roasted pig with crispy skin, is a celebratory dish that is a must-try if you have the opportunity. While often found at parties, some restaurants in Makati offer Lechon portions. The succulent meat and incredibly crunchy skin are a culinary highlight that embodies Filipino festivity and flavor. Seek out reputable eateries known for their quality Lechon.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a friendly smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders or those in positions of authority as a sign of respect. Understanding these basic courtesies will enhance your interactions.

Makati is generally a safe city, especially in commercial and tourist areas. However, like any urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings and take standard precautions. Avoid displaying expensive items openly, keep your belongings secure, and be mindful of petty theft, particularly in crowded places. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night.

For emergencies, the local police hotline is 117. It's also helpful to have the contact details of your hotel readily available. Familiarizing yourself with the general layout of the area you are staying in can also contribute to a feeling of security and ease of navigation.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used and offer a convenient way to book transportation. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp are popular among locals and travelers alike.

The room was beautiful, but there was a blood stain on the pillow. We used the toothbrush and toothpaste provided, but when house keeping came in they threw these out and didn't replace with new ones. Overall the hotel was nice, but due to these things I would not say they are a 5 star hotel. 4 star maybe.

Short Stay Approved - Not enough time to really explore the hotel, it's very clean overall and fairly centrally located to the action in the area within walking distance. Spacious room, more on the modern feel, doesn't feel outdated, I don't recall how frequent room service was, but the big downside is the 1 beach towel in the bathroom... not sure if you need to request more towels and will receive them. Pool area looked good but only up there to take a few photos. Elevators feel a little congested and slow - again, for a 2-3 day stay you're gonna be fine, longer than that I can't say if it's better or not.

This is marked as a 5 star hotel It has the facilities of a 5 star The rooms are very 5 star BUT there are issues that bring it down.. - Check-in / Check out There are hoards of staff working on the front desk waiting to help, all very helpful - yet it regularly takes upto 45mins to check in This is not smooth, it’s annoying, it’s unnecessary and the hotel is well aware of this and they have done absolutely nothing to improve their systems - This is NOT 5 star service They take a cash or electronic deposit payment instead of a card reading as room security This has yet to be returned to my account after 2 weeks, it’s common to take deposits like this in Philippines but a 5 star hotel would have moved past this approach by now It means waiting in reception while a room inspection is conducted before leaving If you’re checking out in a rush for an early flight this is a big inconvenience and all of it completely avoidable by a hotel that cares about its customers experience I’d start here again, but I’d happily stay elsewhere too - The Elevators They have a mind of their own It’s very annoying, it’s slow, it’s clunky - it’s not 5 star - There is a smell of Damp around many corridors and in some rooms

The breakfast was poor and inadequate. The reception staff was not as professional as required. When leaving the hotel we were charged for a towel with a stain of dirt. The lobby is small and uninviting.

Breakfast good. Good location to walk around/ convenient for restaurants. Grab taxi easy to get. Claims to be five star but feels like a four star - very busy. Nice rooftop bar. Convenient for a central Manila stay.

Clean spacious room but not a 5-star room as coffee/creamer was sub standard quality. Internet was slow for the smart tv. The rooftop bar was good and nice drinks. Amenities around the area was good with 24 hours places nearby to eat and drink Would return again if nothing else is around to book with similar price

The only place to stay! I stayed here for one night and it was wonderful. The staff is amazing - very welcoming, professional, and genuinely happy. The rooms are amazing, lots of room and very well designed. Breakfast - yes!!!!! A great buffet with cook to order eggs. Mermaid Pool - beautiful, make sure you get there early because spots go quick.

The best service I've ever experienced. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. The restaurant was good but not incredible, but that's the only thing that was not.
