Your Travel Guide to San Juan as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to San Juan from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to San Juan, Siquijor, from Manila typically involves a flight to Dumaguete City (DGT) in Negros Oriental, as it's the closest major airport with regular commercial flights. From Manila, you can book flight tickets to Dumaguete, with fares often ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 depending on the airline and booking time. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Once you land in Dumaguete, you'll need to take a taxi or a tricycle to the Dumaguete Port. The port is about a 15-20 minute ride away, costing around PHP 100-150. From the Dumaguete Port, you can catch a ferry or fast craft to Siquijor Port. Several shipping lines operate this route, with trips running multiple times a day. The ferry ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, and ticket prices typically range from PHP 250 to PHP 400.

Upon arriving at Siquijor Port, you can easily find tricycles or habal-habal drivers who can take you directly to Infinity Sands Resort in San Juan. The journey from the port to San Juan along the Siquijor Circumferential Road takes about 30-45 minutes and usually costs around PHP 200-300 per person for a tricycle. This multi-step journey is a common way for Filipino travelers to reach the island, offering scenic views along the way.

Best Time to Visit San Juan

The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the best time to visit San Juan, Siquijor. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, which are ideal for island activities like swimming, snorkeling, and exploring. The weather is typically warm and pleasant, making it comfortable for outdoor adventures and enjoying the beaches.

The peak tourist season usually falls between December and February, coinciding with the Christmas holidays and the cooler months. During this period, expect more crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. For a balance of good weather and fewer people, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November, March, April, or May.

The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rainfall and occasional typhoons. While you might find lower prices and fewer tourists during this time, the unpredictable weather can sometimes disrupt travel plans and outdoor activities. If you don't mind occasional rain showers and are looking for a more secluded experience, the wet season can still be a viable option.

Food and Dining Near San Juan — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in San Juan, Siquijor, exploring the local culinary scene is a must. Filipino travelers should definitely try Kinilaw, a dish of raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It's a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the fresh seafood available on the island. Many local eateries and carinderias offer their own versions of this classic dish.

Another local specialty to seek out is SUTUKIL, a cooking method that stands for Sugba (grill), Tuwa (stew), and Kilaw (raw). Restaurants often offer a SUTUKIL platter where you can choose your fresh seafood and have it prepared in these three distinct ways. This allows you to sample a variety of flavors and textures using the freshest catch of the day.

Don't leave Siquijor without trying some local delicacies like Halo-Halo for dessert. This popular Filipino treat is a mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down and satisfy your sweet tooth after a day of exploring. You can find this and other local snacks at various food stalls and restaurants around San Juan.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for San Juan

Siquijor is known for its rich folklore and traditions, often associated with healing and mysticism. While these beliefs are part of the island's charm, it's respectful to approach them with an open mind and curiosity. Engaging with locals in a friendly manner is always appreciated. Remember to dress modestly when visiting churches or local communities.

For safety, Siquijor is generally considered a safe island for tourists. However, it's always wise to take standard precautions: keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. If you need to contact local authorities, the emergency number for the Philippine National Police is typically 911.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is crucial for navigation, especially when exploring the island's less-traveled roads. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter situations where communication is a barrier, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. Lastly, a weather app can help you stay updated on the forecast, allowing you to plan your activities accordingly.

I was disapointed. I picked a beach side resort with the word "Sands" in it expecting there is going to be a sandy beach to enjoy. While there was a beach, there's trash all over the place and dog sh*t, and to make things worse, waste water from the restaurant next door drains out into the ocean, which you could smell from the resorts beach front. Also, the staff all go home at 10pm. I did not get my money's worth here at all. Sad.

It was good. However, they don’t have any generator set to be used during brown out, which unfortunately happened during our stay. They have lesser options for meals, especially breakfast and it almost always took them long to serve the food. Their shower area is quite cramped and I dunno why they used a shower curtain for its door, when it was supposed to be glass. But in overall, it was a good stay.

The team at infinity sands are the most welcoming we have met on our travels through the Philippines. They make it a great experience, they have great knowledge of the island. The rooms are very nice, the beds soft and pillows lovely. The breakfast are very good, and pool is nice. The team at the bar deliver with happy hour, 4 till 8 at 100 pesos each. The food served at the hotel is also good, sizzling squid and calamari spring to mind. They have only 8 rooms which make it a quiet serene location on the beach. The balcony is a great viewing point for the sunsets. Overall a most enjoyable experience,a definitel 5 out of 5 would visit again.

Fantastic choice. Hotel was very nice, clean, comfortable but the best part was the staff. Extremely friendly amd helpful for anything you need whether it was organizing bike rentals, tips where to go or information regarding travel arrangements, they knew it all. Resraurant was very good as well with a nice patio for dining and good menu options. Location is good too, close enough to San Juan so many eating/drinking options in the area. This hotel also has a sister hotel which you can get access to their amazing infinity pool with incredible views. Don't miss taking advantage of that. There is a small sandy beach area which is good enough to get some sun and laze around on, but not much else. Definitely worth considering this property for your vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Fine rom, god frokost. God lokalisering.

Such an amazing hotel very accommodating to our needs. Offered to rent us a scooter for a couple days. Had a beautiful restaurant in the hotel. Right on the beach. Clean rooms and pool. 10/10 would recommend

Great spacious room. 4 adults (with 2 extra bed) fit in the room. Great location. Beside a good resto. Their beach wasn’t the best.

The staff were amazing. Overall the room was ok but the pillows have yellow stains on them and need changing so it made the room feel less clean

Location is great, right next to Baha bar (the best bar/resturant in Siquijor). Hotel rooms are getting a little run down, but still fine.
