Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers, reaching Makati from within Metro Manila is generally straightforward, with numerous options available. If you are already in the capital region, taxis, ride-sharing apps like Grab, and public transportation such as the MRT and LRT systems are efficient ways to get to Makati. For instance, taking the MRT to Ayala Station or Buendia Station (Gil Puyat) and then a short taxi or jeepney ride will bring you close to the city center.

These options are generally budget-friendly, with fares often ranging from PHP 20 to PHP 50 depending on your starting point.

If you are traveling from major hubs like Cebu or Davao, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the most practical choice. From NAIA, you can easily take a taxi or Grab to Makati, a journey typically costing between PHP 300 to PHP 500 and taking approximately 30 to 45 minutes, traffic permitting.

Booking your flight in advance through platforms like Traveloka can often secure better fares, with round-trip tickets from Cebu or Davao to Manila sometimes available for as low as PHP 3,000 to PHP 6,000, depending on the season and airline.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces, bus travel is a viable and economical option. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila, such as those in Cubao or Pasay, offer routes to various points in Makati. Bus tickets from cities like Baguio or even further south like Naga can range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500, with travel times varying significantly from 6 to 10 hours or more.

While this option requires more time, it allows you to see more of the country and is often preferred by budget-conscious travelers.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, typically from November to April, is generally considered the best time to visit for travelers who prefer sunny days and less humidity. During these months, you can comfortably explore the city's outdoor attractions, enjoy al fresco dining, and engage in activities without the interruption of heavy rainfall.

This period also coincides with major holidays like Christmas and Holy Week, making it a popular time for both local and international tourists, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season, from May to October, brings intermittent rainfall, which can range from light showers to heavy downpours. While this season might deter some from outdoor activities, it also offers a different appeal. The city can feel less crowded, and you might find better deals on flights and hotels. For travelers who don't mind occasional rain and are looking for a more relaxed pace, the wet season can be an excellent time to visit.

You can focus on indoor attractions like museums, shopping malls, and enjoying the diverse culinary scene that Makati offers.

For a balanced experience, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as November or February. These periods often offer pleasant weather without the peak season crowds. You can enjoy the city's offerings with more ease and potentially at a more moderate cost. Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on your personal preferences regarding weather, crowd levels, and budget.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No visit to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary heritage, and Makati offers a fantastic array of dining experiences. A dish that truly represents Filipino comfort food is Adobo. Whether it's chicken or pork, the savory and slightly tangy flavor profile, achieved through soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a national favorite. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries around Makati, often served with steamed rice.

Look for smaller, family-run restaurants for an authentic taste.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that is incredibly comforting, especially on a rainy day. The sourness typically comes from tamarind, but other fruits like guava or calamansi can also be used. It’s usually packed with meat (pork, beef, fish, or shrimp) and a variety of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The unique tanginess is something distinctly Filipino and a delightful contrast to richer dishes.

Many Filipino restaurants in Makati will feature this staple on their menu.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, Lechon Kawali is a treat. This is deep-fried pork belly that results in incredibly crispy skin and tender, juicy meat. It’s often served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce. The satisfying crunch and rich flavor make it a popular choice for celebrations and everyday meals alike. You'll find this dish in many Filipino restaurants and even some food courts within Makati's malls.

Don't leave without trying Sisig, a dish often made from chopped pig's face and ears, seasoned with onions, chili peppers, and calamansi, and often served sizzling on a hot plate. While its ingredients might sound adventurous, its savory, spicy, and slightly sour taste is incredibly addictive. It’s a perfect pulutan (bar snack) or a hearty meal when paired with rice. Many establishments in Makati offer their own unique take on this beloved dish.

Finally, for dessert, Halo-Halo is an iconic Filipino treat that you must sample. This refreshing dessert is a mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a colorful and delightful concoction that offers a sweet and cooling end to any meal. You can find this popular dessert in many Filipino restaurants and dessert shops throughout Makati.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and warmth, and this is very much evident in Makati. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) is always appreciated. While English is widely spoken, especially in business and commercial areas like Makati, making an effort to use a few local phrases can enhance your interactions. Respect for elders and a generally amiable demeanor are key aspects of Filipino culture.

When it comes to safety in Makati, it's generally considered one of the safer districts in Metro Manila, especially in its commercial and business areas. However, like any major city, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings. Be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded places like malls and public transport. Avoid displaying expensive items openly and be cautious of unsolicited offers or overly friendly strangers.

For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 117, and it's advisable to have the hotel's contact number readily available.

For navigating Makati and the wider Metro Manila area, several apps can be incredibly useful for Filipino travelers. Grab is essential for booking rides, food delivery, and even grocery shopping, offering a convenient and often cashless way to get around and access services. Waze or Google Maps are indispensable for real-time traffic updates and navigation, helping you plan your routes more effectively.

GCash or Maya are popular mobile wallets that allow for easy cashless transactions, which are becoming increasingly common for payments in shops, restaurants, and for online bookings.

Understanding local customs can greatly enrich your travel experience. For instance, it's customary to remove your shoes before entering someone's home. While this isn't typically required in hotels or commercial establishments, it's a good practice to be aware of. Tipping is not mandatory in the Philippines, but it is appreciated for good service, usually around 10% in restaurants if a service charge is not already included.

Embracing these cultural nuances will help you connect more deeply with the local way of life.

Breakfast has limited selection. I was in room 319. It smelled weird in the room, almost musky. Then the safe locked my items inside giving an error code. It took 2 visits + 30 minutes before the “housekeeping” staff fixed the issue. I was here for a week. The second last day of my stay the air conditioner poured water all over my clothes that were under it. It took 7 (maybe more) calls to reception desk to have housekeeping come to my room (7+ times) over an hour. I had my waste bucket catching water, it was that bad. The staff said initially it was due to me having the temperature at 22, so they put it to 18! It still leaked water. Then it was due to a valve in the basement. The reasons were ridiculous and didn’t fix the problem. I got annoyed and turned it off. (it still dripped.) They said all rooms were booked and I couldn’t be moved. In the morning a room was still not available, but at 1pm (13:00) I was told it was a business suite that I was upgraded to at no extra charge. I moved my things to room 410. The room smelled better for the first 10 minutes. It was a little more spacious then the last. It’s air conditioner wasn’t leaking. While charging my phone in the wall outlet close to the window, I noticed a big water stain near by. I noticed water leaking from the wall. The wall paper had a broken seam, & was peeing water. Under it was older wall damage. Maintenance doesn’t seem to be done. If not fixed water issues can cause mold!

Good hotel for a short stay, only thing was not happy about is they charge 1,400 pesos for a transfer from the airport with Avis but a Lyft costs 400 pesos so felt a bit ripped off as they did not provide this information as a cheaper option. Staff also not very helpful with providing recommendations for food / activities in there area , just gave us the mao

Shopping center is within 8 minute walk. The facility is clean. Mattress and pillow are too firm for me. I'm just glad the sheets are clean and AC is in good condition. Breakfast buffet was not spectacular but acceptable. Coffee though is weak. For the price I paid, I'm satisfied. Would definitely book this hotel again .

Jinjian Inn in Makati is a very convenient place for those of us who need to be where we want to be in a quick manner. It's conveniently located near everything, and parking is available for guests, which is very much needed in the area when driving a car. A few other things I like about this hotel are the daily breakfast they offer (which you need to pay for, of course), the polite service of the staff and the cleanliness of the rooms where I stayed. The first room where I stayed had a leaking air conditioning unit that needed fixing. For people with allergies, that's a big deal because you don't want to wake up in the morning with a stuffed nose and a sore throat! However, the staff was quick to respond, and they promptly moved me to a new room with a new air conditioning unit. Other than that, and the internet on the TV that constantly warned of a weak connection, I have no regrets in staying with Jinjiang. Matter of fact, I'm happy to stay there again, provided there's no more leaking aircon unit in my room! :)
