Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common way to reach Boracay Island from Manila is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Caticlan Airport (MPH), which is the closest airport to the island, with fares typically ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on booking time and season. Flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Alternatively, you can fly to Kalibo International Airport (KLO), which often has cheaper flights, usually between PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000, but requires a longer land transfer of about 1.5 to 2 hours to Caticlan Jetty Port. Booking your book flight in advance is highly recommended.

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Clark, direct flights to Caticlan or Kalibo are also available. Similar to flights from Manila, prices and travel times will vary. If you prefer a more overland journey, you can take a bus from Manila to Caticlan. This is a longer option, typically taking around 10 to 12 hours, with bus fares ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500. This route is more suitable for those who enjoy road trips and want to see more of the country.

Once you arrive at Caticlan Airport or Kalibo Airport, you will need to take a tricycle or van to Caticlan Jetty Port. From the port, a 15-minute boat ride will take you to Boracay Island. Be prepared for terminal and environmental fees, which are mandatory for all visitors. The total travel time from Manila, including transfers, can range from 4 to 6 hours for flights to Caticlan, and 6 to 8 hours for flights to Kalibo.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

The ideal time to visit Boracay Island for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to April. This period offers sunny skies, calm seas, and lower humidity, making it perfect for beach activities, swimming, and water sports. The months of December to February are particularly popular, offering pleasant weather but also attracting larger crowds and higher prices for accommodation and flights.

For those who prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, the shoulder months of November and April can be excellent choices. The weather is still generally good, though you might encounter occasional rain showers. The amihan season (northeast monsoon) from November to May brings calmer waters to the western side of the island, where White Beach is located. Conversely, the habagat season (southwest monsoon) from May to October can bring stronger winds and occasional rainfall, though it's also a time when you might find better deals.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in local flavors, and Boracay offers plenty of opportunities to do so. A must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, typically made with fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. You can find excellent Kinilaw at many beachfront restaurants, often prepared with locally caught tuna or tanigue. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly complements the tropical climate.

Another Filipino favorite you should seek out is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo. While Boracay is a beach destination, finding a good bowl of Batchoy can be a comforting experience, especially on a cooler evening or after a long day of activities. Look for local eateries or carinderias that serve this rich broth filled with pork, shrimp, and crispy garlic.

Seafood is, of course, a highlight in Boracay. Freshly grilled fish, prawns, and squid are readily available at numerous dining spots. Many restaurants allow you to select your seafood from a display and have it cooked to your preference, often grilled or steamed. This is a fantastic way to enjoy the ocean's bounty. For a taste of something sweet, try Halo-Halo, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s the ultimate cool-down treat.

For authentic Filipino dishes, explore the eateries around D'Mall and Station 2. You can find everything from simple silog meals (rice and egg with various meats) for breakfast to more elaborate Filipino feasts for dinner. Don't shy away from smaller, local establishments; they often offer the most genuine flavors and best value for money.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

Boracay Island, while a tourist hotspot, maintains a local culture that values respect and community. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Be mindful of local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites. The island has implemented environmental regulations, so it's important to dispose of trash properly and avoid single-use plastics.

Safety is paramount for any traveler. Boracay is generally a safe destination, but it's always wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, the local police hotline is usually available through the front desk, and it's good to have the number of your hotel readily accessible. The island has a local tourism office that can assist with any concerns.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is crucial for navigating the island. For communication, apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used by Filipinos. If you plan on booking activities or tours on the go, the Traveloka app is indispensable for finding and booking attractions and accommodations. Having a currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget.

Remember that Boracay has specific rules regarding noise levels and public consumption of alcohol in certain areas to maintain peace and order. Familiarize yourself with these regulations to ensure a pleasant stay for yourself and others. Respecting the local environment and community guidelines will contribute to a more positive and enriching travel experience on this beautiful Philippine island.

The place is okay because it's just a short walk to the white beach. Station 1 is better for me, last time I was at station 3 there were too many people. If you have something to order or are walking, you can eat. But if you're swimming at station 1, there are fewer people.

The place is okay because it's just a short walk to the white beach. Station 1 is better for me, last time I was at station 3 there were too many people. If you have something to order or are walking, you can eat. But if you're swimming at station 1, there are fewer people.

Casa de Boracay is easy to access to the station 1 beach, which is around 20 to 30 meters away. That's what I like about it.

If you are on a tight budget but still want to go to Boracay and looking for a budgetarian place to stay, this one is for you. La Bella is a walking distance to shoreline.

The room was clean and tidy and the staff was very nice, but the only downside is they need to fix their WiFi because it keeps cutting off, back and forth.

La Bella Casa is great for budget travelers. A house converted into a small hotel is a great place if you're trying to save money and enjoy your vacation in Boracay at the same time. The staff especially Imee and Joanne were very helpful. Great Location! Only 2-minute walk to the beach and The Grotto and 1 E-trike away from d mall and restaurants.

We actually stayed on Boracay Breeze Resort since they're just owned by single owners and La Bella Casa is still being renovated. Despite this, our stay went very well for the staff are accommodating and very helpful on providing us a pleasant stay. Will definitely return again!
