Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common way to reach Boracay Island from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights to Caticlan (MPH) are the quickest, with travel time around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate these routes, with fares typically ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on booking time and season. Kalibo (KLO) is another option, often with cheaper flights but a longer land transfer (about 1.5 to 2 hours) to the Caticlan Jetty Port.

For those preferring land travel, you can take a bus from major terminals in Metro Manila (like Cubao or Pasay) to Caticlan. This journey is significantly longer, usually taking 10 to 12 hours, with bus fares ranging from PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,500 one way. This option is more budget-friendly but requires a substantial time commitment. You can also book flight tickets and then arrange for bus transfers from the airport to the jetty port.

If you opt to drive, you can take your private vehicle to Caticlan. The drive from Manila involves navigating major expressways and national highways, with toll fees adding to the overall cost. This route takes approximately 10 to 12 hours. Upon reaching Caticlan, you will need to park your car and proceed with the boat transfer to Boracay Island.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

Boracay Island experiences two main seasons: the dry season (Amihan) from November to May, and the wet season (Habagat) from June to October. The dry season is generally considered the best time to visit, with sunny skies, calm seas, and lower humidity, making it ideal for beach activities and water sports. Peak season falls between December and February, offering the most pleasant weather but also the largest crowds and higher prices.

For travelers seeking a balance between good weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder months of November and May are excellent choices. During these periods, you can still enjoy favorable conditions with more affordable rates and a more relaxed atmosphere. The wet season, while prone to occasional rains and stronger winds, can offer significantly lower prices and a more tranquil island experience for those unfazed by the possibility of intermittent showers.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in local delicacies, and Boracay offers plenty of opportunities to do so. A must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, featuring fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. You can find excellent versions at local eateries along White Beach, often prepared with the freshest catch of the day.

Another Filipino favorite is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork, shrimp, and vegetables, originating from Iloilo. While not strictly a Boracay dish, many restaurants on the island offer it, providing a comforting and flavorful meal, especially on cooler evenings. Look for smaller, local carinderias for an authentic taste.

Seafood is, of course, a highlight. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are abundant and can be enjoyed at numerous beachfront restaurants. Many establishments allow you to select your seafood fresh from the display and have it cooked to your preference. This is a characteristic Boracay dining experience, best enjoyed with a side of garlic rice and a view of the sea.

For a sweet treat, try Halo-Halo, the iconic Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It's the perfect refreshment on a hot day. You'll find countless vendors and cafes offering their own unique take on this beloved dessert across the island.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

Boracay Island is known for its friendly locals and a generally relaxed island culture. While the island is a popular tourist destination, it's important to be respectful of local customs. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites like Iglesia Ni Cristo - Lokal ng Boracay. Always greet people with a smile and be polite in your interactions.

Safety is a priority for visitors. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night. Be aware of your surroundings and keep your valuables secure. The local authorities are present, but it's always wise to take personal precautions. For emergencies, the local police hotline is usually available through directory assistance or by asking your hotel's front desk.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app can help you find your way around the island, though tricycles are the primary mode of transport. Ride-hailing apps might be limited, so familiarize yourself with local tricycle rates. A weather app is also useful for planning your daily activities.

Additionally, having a communication app like WhatsApp or Messenger is helpful for staying in touch with travel companions or coordinating with your hotel. Ensure you have offline maps downloaded as a backup, as internet connectivity can sometimes be spotty. These tools can significantly enhance your travel experience and preparedness.

This was my third visit within 7 years at Le Soleil Boracay. The first 2 times was perfect, this time, the rooms (we booked 3 rooms) were musty and the restrooms smelled of urine, even after housekeeping- maybe it’s time for a renovation. Overall, staff was pleasant and you can’t beat the complimentary daily breakfast.

This is not a 4 star hotel, poorly maintained, rooms very outdated, nothing like the photos, pool, chairs and surrounds in need of upgrade, staff unfriendly, breakfast average only catering to Asian travelers. The only redeeming thing is the location where you walk out directly onto the sand of the magnificent White Beach.

The room is very nice and clean. The area is walkable to all shopping area like D’Mall. All employees I have met is very friendly and accommodating. I made a great decision to request for a pick up from the Airport to the Hotel and back to the Airport. The service is really great. If coming back to this place, I would chose them again.
