Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common and efficient method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights from key cities such as Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo. Flight durations typically range from 1 to 2 hours, with fares varying significantly based on booking time and airline promotions, often starting from PHP 1,500 for a one-way ticket. You can easily book flight tickets through Traveloka for competitive rates.

If you prefer land travel or are coming from nearby Luzon provinces, bus services are a practical and economical option. Major bus terminals like Cubao and Pasay cater to routes from various provincial destinations. For example, a bus trip from Baguio City to Manila takes approximately 4 to 6 hours, with fares typically ranging from PHP 500 to PHP 800. Buses offer a more scenic route and allow you to carry more luggage.

Driving to Manila is also feasible for those residing within Luzon. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to the city. Toll fees will apply, varying based on the entry and exit points, but generally ranging from PHP 300 to PHP 600 for a round trip. This option provides the most flexibility for exploring beyond the immediate city center.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is generally sunny with lower humidity, making it more comfortable for outdoor activities and city exploration. Temperatures usually range from 24°C to 32°C, with occasional cooler evenings in December and January.

The period from December to February is particularly pleasant, often considered the peak tourist season due to the favorable weather and festive holiday atmosphere. However, this also means higher hotel rates and larger crowds at popular attractions. For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or March to April. The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy and disruptive to travel plans.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households. You can find excellent versions in traditional eateries and even in hotel restaurants. Look for establishments that offer a rich, well-balanced flavor profile.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, shrimp, or fish, soured with tamarind or other local fruits like guava or calamansi. The comforting warmth and distinct tang of Sinigang make it a favorite, especially on cooler evenings or after a long day. Many local carinderias and restaurants serve this hearty soup.

For a taste of something sweet and refreshing, Halo-Halo is essential. This popular dessert is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect antidote to Manila’s heat and a true Filipino treat. You'll find numerous stalls and cafes offering their unique take on this beloved dessert.

Don't leave Manila without trying Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its crispy skin and succulent meat. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, many restaurants offer Lechon portions for everyday enjoyment. The rich flavor and satisfying crunch make it an indulgence worth seeking out. Exploring the local markets and specialized Lechon restaurants will offer the most authentic experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a friendly smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. Understanding and appreciating these cultural nuances will enhance your interactions.

When it comes to safety, it's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets and public transport. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also wise to have the contact details of your hotel readily accessible.

For navigating the city and staying informed, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for ride-hailing and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Waze or Google Maps are invaluable for real-time traffic updates and navigation. For communication, ensure you have a local SIM card or an international roaming package.

Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively in local dialects, although English is widely spoken in Manila. Staying informed about local events and news through reliable sources can also help you plan your itinerary and stay updated on any advisories.

Stayed 1 night to have my child's confirmation at the nearby Quiapo Church. The hotel is dated but seems to be clean. Some reviewers did not like the bed but that was ok to us. Our shower did not have hot water and pressure was light. At one time the whole block's power was cut off, the hotel's generator did not automatically kick in, had to wait about 20mins for generator to be started. Lots of shops and authentic chinese eateries around this hotel. Stay was ok except for the shower...good thing it was for only 1 night.

Positives: Close to the bus station. Negatives: Old, musty, run-down building in a not-so-nice neighbourhood.

if you like shopping for surprisingly affordable gold jewellery, there are so many nearby shops. You just need to be able to cope with the hard mattress that is on the bed in your room.

Staff good; food good, Chinese; bed very very hard & pillows flat. When wanting better & additional pillows wanted fee of Php 50. Rooms clean. Not a good safe area and further from Manila centre than ad.

Needed a place to stay near Divisoria. Conveniently nearby where we needed to go. Hotel was accommodating at last minute booking. Place is clean and room was suitable.

The beds where hard as a rock. There was cockroaches in our room. We booked this hotel for two nights but only stayed the first night and used your app to find another hotel for the second night. This hotel is very bad. I stay in a lot of hotels and this one is the worst one ever.

It was dreadful experience - No hot water, poor service... mattress were like rocks, not comfy at all. Only the reception area was good. Location wise, our taxi driver could not locate the hotel at first.

I was very disappointed with my stay. The safe in my room was not fixed to the wall or any surface, making it completely insecure and useless. Even worse, there were many small cockroaches in the room, which made me feel very uncomfortable.
