Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, Manila is most commonly reached by air. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from key cities such as Cebu, Davao, and Palawan. Flight durations typically range from 1 to 2 hours, with fares varying based on booking time and airline, but you can often find competitive prices if you book flight tickets in advance.

Land travel via bus is another viable option for those coming from Luzon's northern and southern regions. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila, such as Cubao and Pasay, serve as hubs for inter-provincial bus routes. Journeys can range from 4 to 10 hours or more, depending on the origin city. Bus fares are generally more economical than flights, offering a budget-friendly way to reach the capital, with prices typically ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500.

Driving to Manila is also possible for those residing within driving distance. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to the city's road network. Toll fees will apply, and travel time can vary significantly due to traffic, especially as you approach the metropolitan area. Planning your route and considering off-peak travel times can help make the drive smoother.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time for Filipino travelers to visit Manila is generally during the cooler, dry season, which runs from November to February. During these months, the weather is more pleasant, with lower humidity and average temperatures ranging from 24°C to 31°C. This period is perfect for exploring the city's outdoor attractions, historical sites, and enjoying walks without the intense heat and frequent rains of other seasons.

The shoulder months of March to May can be quite hot, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C, making outdoor activities more challenging. The rainy season typically spans from June to October, characterized by heavy downpours, potential typhoons, and increased humidity. While this season might offer lower accommodation prices, it can disrupt travel plans and limit outdoor exploration. Therefore, the November to February window is highly recommended for a more comfortable and enjoyable visit.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. A must-try is Adobo, the unofficial national dish, featuring meat (usually chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. Its savory and tangy profile is a true taste of Filipino home cooking. You can find excellent versions in traditional eateries and even in more upscale restaurants around the city.

Another iconic dish is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat or seafood, along with various vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The comforting, slightly tart flavor is perfect for any weather. Many local carinderias and restaurants near the Manila Grand Opera Hotel will offer this hearty soup.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an essential dessert experience. This popular Filipino treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a refreshing and visually appealing dessert that perfectly caps off a meal. Look for specialized halo-halo stalls or dessert cafes.

Don't forget to try Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its crispy skin and succulent meat. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, many restaurants offer lechon portions for everyday dining. Its rich flavor and satisfying crunch make it a beloved Filipino delicacy. Exploring the local markets and food streets will reveal many opportunities to sample these and other Filipino favorites.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) is appreciated. Respect for elders is paramount, and it's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to older individuals or those in authority. Tipping is not mandatory but is always welcome for good service.

When it comes to safety in Manila, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, to avoid petty theft. Keep valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's also recommended to use reputable transportation services, such as accredited taxis or ride-sharing apps. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. Google Maps is indispensable for navigation, helping you find your way around the city and estimate travel times. Grab is the go-to app for ride-sharing and food delivery, offering convenience and transparent pricing. A currency converter app can also be useful for managing your budget.

Familiarize yourself with basic Filipino phrases; while English is widely spoken, knowing a few words can enrich your interactions. Understanding local customs, such as removing shoes before entering someone's home, shows respect. Being prepared with these cultural insights and practical tools will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable visit to Manila.

It's a nice hotel located right next to Doroteo Jose MRT. Not a very nice area, a bit too crowded and not many clean street food stalls available. This hotel serves good food and good service. Room is spacious and nice but interior design can be improved (room is painted blue).

Generally, we enjoyed our stay esp the kids when they went for a swim. The rooms & bed spreads are not that pristine but can be considered as clean and it's good that the ACs are working well. Although, I wish they had served a more decent breakfast buffet, other than hotdogs, corned beef & eggs.

I love the food. They offer varieties of food such as Chinese, Filipino food, etc. The place looked good but the rooms have big curtains but no windows. I was really excited to see the view but unfortunately, it was just a curtain. The television is old. Staying there was boring. The parking was full that time so we waited for some customers to check out in order to park. The guard there was really disrespectful. He disrespected my mom because my mom was only suggesting about the parking thing but he shouted something to my mom. However their service was really exceptional. They treat us like royals.

I have stayed with my mom who came from Leyte to spend long weekends with us during the holidays. The room is what you get with what you pay for. Everything is nice except for the old television with poor reception. What makes it more worst is that on our second day, the cable connection was lost and the technicians couldn't fix it anymore until the third day that we checked out. Doing movie marathon while lying all day in bed for a vacation is what we are supposed to do but we ended up going to the mall to spend the day and goes back to the hotel to sleep.

Rooms have no windows, so the air you breathe is circulating via the air conditioning unit only.

Rooms amenities are not complete. No slippers and no hot water in shower room. The pillows are not comfortable and bed lines too. But the staffs were very accommodating.
