Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common and convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate regular flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on the origin city. Fares can vary significantly based on the season, booking time, and airline, but booking flight tickets in advance, especially during peak travel periods, can help secure more affordable rates.

For travelers coming from areas not directly served by flights to Puerto Princesa, or for those seeking a more economical option, overland travel combined with a ferry is also possible, though significantly more time-consuming. This usually involves traveling to a port city like El Nido or Coron and then taking a ferry. However, for most travelers originating from Luzon or the Visayas, flying directly into PPS remains the most practical choice. Consider using Traveloka to book flight options that best suit your schedule and budget.

While bus travel is extensive within Luzon, direct bus routes to Puerto Princesa are not common due to the geographical separation by sea. Travelers typically need to reach a major port and then take a ferry. For those who prefer to drive their own vehicle, it involves a combination of land travel and ferry services, which requires careful planning and can take several days. Therefore, for most Filipino travelers, booking a flight is the recommended method for reaching Puerto Princesa efficiently.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa experiences a tropical climate, with generally warm temperatures year-round. The best time to visit for most travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall, more sunshine, and calmer seas, making it ideal for island hopping, exploring the Underground River, and enjoying the beaches. The peak tourist season often falls between December and February, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights.

The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rain, which can sometimes be heavy and prolonged. However, this period also sees fewer tourists and can offer more budget-friendly travel options. If you don't mind occasional rain showers and are looking for a more tranquil experience, visiting during the shoulder months of November or May can also be a good compromise, offering pleasant weather with fewer crowds. Regardless of when you choose to visit, always check the weather forecast closer to your travel dates.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Puerto Princesa, exploring the local culinary scene is a delight for any Filipino traveler. One dish you absolutely must try is Kinilaw. Similar to ceviche, it features fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. Palawan's version often uses locally caught seafood, offering a distinct and refreshing taste that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent Kinilaw at many local eateries and restaurants, especially those near the coast.

Another local specialty to seek out is Tamilok, often referred to as woodworms. These are actually a type of saltwater clam that burrows into mangrove wood. They are typically served fresh, dipped in vinegar, or lightly cooked. While the appearance might be unusual for some, the taste is often described as briny and slightly sweet, with a texture similar to oysters. Trying Tamilok is an adventurous culinary experience that many visitors to Palawan seek out.

For those who enjoy grilled dishes, look for fresh seafood like grilled squid (pusit) or fish, often seasoned simply and cooked over charcoal. Many local carinderias and restaurants offer a variety of grilled options that showcase the freshness of Palawan's marine bounty. Pair these with a side of garlic rice and a local dipping sauce for a satisfying Filipino meal. Don't forget to try some fresh buko (young coconut) juice to quench your thirst.

Finally, no trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in some sweet treats. Look for local delicacies like Palawan honey or various fruit-based desserts. Exploring the local markets can also lead you to discover unique snacks and pastries that offer a taste of the region's flavors. Engaging with local food vendors and asking for recommendations is a great way to discover hidden culinary gems.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipino culture in Puerto Princesa, like much of the Philippines, is characterized by warmth, hospitality, and a strong sense of community. Visitors are encouraged to be respectful of local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites and always greeting elders with respect. Learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Magandang araw" (Good day) can go a long way in fostering positive interactions with locals.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, but as with any travel destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and keep your valuables secure. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For any emergencies, the local police can be reached at 911. It's also advisable to have the contact details of your accommodation and any tour operators readily accessible.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city and finding your way to attractions. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter language barriers, although English is widely understood in tourist areas. For managing your bookings and finding local information, having the Traveloka app on your phone is highly recommended, allowing you to easily book attractions or find dining options.

Additionally, apps that provide real-time weather updates can be useful for planning outdoor activities, especially during the transitional seasons. Having a local currency converter app can also be handy for managing your budget. These digital tools can significantly streamline your trip, making it easier to navigate, communicate, and make the most of your time in Puerto Princesa.

Our 4-night stay was for my birthday celebration.I'm a breast feeding mom but since I didn't bring my little one with us, I had to ask them if they would allow me to put my expressed breastmilk in their freezer. I am so thankful for that, and I can't wait to share the experience to my fellow breastfeeding advocate. It was a wonderful gift for me already. The staffs are accommodating, the inn looks really good from the facade up to the interior. We finally had a decent sleep since our baby was born (pun intended). Highly recommended.
