Your Travel Guide to Naval as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Naval from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Naval from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air, flying into Tacloban City (TAC). Major airlines operate daily flights from Manila to Tacloban, with travel times typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly, so it's wise to book flight tickets well in advance, especially during peak seasons, to find more affordable options. From Tacloban, you can then take a bus or van directly to Naval.

Bus travel is also an option, though considerably longer. From Manila, you can find buses bound for Tacloban, which is an overnight journey of approximately 10-12 hours. The fare typically ranges from PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,500, depending on the bus company and class. Once in Tacloban, you can catch another bus or a van heading to Naval, which takes another 2-3 hours.

For those coming from other parts of the Visayas, ferry services might be available to Leyte, from where you can proceed to Tacloban and then Naval. Driving is also possible for the adventurous, but it involves a long journey, including ferry crossings if coming from Luzon. Regardless of your chosen mode of transport, planning your route and booking in advance will ensure a smoother travel experience to the beautiful island of Biliran.

Best Time to Visit Naval

The climate in Naval and Biliran province is generally tropical, characterized by warm temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The dry season, typically from March to May, offers the most pleasant weather with less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, island hopping, and exploring the waterfalls and rice terraces. During these months, you can expect sunny days perfect for enjoying the beaches and natural landscapes.

The wet season runs from June to November, bringing with it increased chances of rain, sometimes heavy, and occasional typhoons, particularly from July to October. While the rain can be intense, it often comes in short bursts, and the landscape becomes even more lush and green. For travelers seeking fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, visiting during the shoulder months of the wet season can be a good option, provided you are prepared for possible weather disruptions.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the months of March, April, and May are often recommended for visiting Naval. However, the beauty of Biliran can be appreciated year-round. Always check the weather forecast before your trip and pack accordingly, including rain gear and insect repellent, especially if you plan to visit during the wetter months.

Food and Dining Near Naval — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Naval, Biliran, be sure to sample the local delicacies that showcase the region's fresh ingredients and culinary traditions. Seafood is abundant, so dishes like grilled fish (isda inihaw) and kinilaw (Filipino ceviche) are highly recommended. Enjoying these fresh catches by the sea is a truly satisfying experience that captures the essence of island dining.

Another local favorite you should try is Pancit Bilbil, a unique noodle dish specific to the province. Unlike other pancit variations, it uses a thin, almost translucent noodle and is often served with a flavorful sauce and toppings. Its distinct texture and taste make it a must-try for any foodie exploring Biliran.

Don't forget to try some local sweets and snacks. Look for delicacies made from local fruits like bananas and coconuts. You might also find various types of puto (rice cakes) and bibingka (a baked rice cake) that offer a taste of traditional Filipino comfort food. Exploring the local markets and eateries will give you the best chance to discover these culinary treasures.

For a hearty meal, consider trying La Paz Batchoy, a rich noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular across the Visayas. Its savory broth, tender pork, and fresh toppings make it a comforting and delicious choice, especially on a cooler evening. Exploring the local eateries in Naval will provide ample opportunities to savor these and other regional specialties.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Naval

The people of Naval and Biliran are known for their hospitality and friendly nature. It's customary to greet locals with a smile and a polite "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you). Respecting local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas, is appreciated. Understanding and observing these simple courtesies will enhance your interactions with the community.

Safety in Naval is generally good, with crime rates being relatively low. However, as with any travel destination, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or when using public transport. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, local police assistance can be reached through standard emergency numbers, and it's good practice to have the contact details of your accommodation readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around Naval and the island. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter phrases you don't understand, although English and Tagalog are widely spoken. For booking transportation or activities, the Traveloka app is your go-to resource, offering convenience and access to various services.

Additionally, having a weather app can help you stay updated on any potential weather changes, especially during the rainy season. Staying informed about local conditions will allow you to adjust your plans accordingly and ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Remember to also keep your mobile phone charged and consider getting a local SIM card for better connectivity and potentially lower call and data rates.

Property is older and not well maintained or kept. Parking sucked. Restaurant had limited food items available from the menu. Breakfast items was also very limited. Pool water smelled like oil / gas. Customer service was non-existent. I should’ve done my homework and gone with other options that I found out about later.

The property has an excellent restaurant. The food we ordered for dinner was delicious especially the grilled fish. The big problem is that because of this it’s very popular and the restaurant is critically understaffed. As for the rooms, they are ok; the aircon is very noisy and not powerful enough for the room size. I booked two rooms but at check-in they insisted that I only had one until eventually they found the second booking. Initially I was given the wrong room (twin beds instead of a queen bed). The property also advertises a ‘pool’ but it was badly maintained and looked unclean. In summary; the restaurant is excellent, the rest of the experience was mediocre.

The pictures don’t do it justice. The furniture and cabinets were a bit worn, but the room was clean and comfortable. Reception took care of a couple of small issues I did have. Like most places I would have enjoyed a few more pay Premium channels. The property was clean and tidy. The pool could use some attention. The restaurant and new bar were excellent. The staff was very attentive and very professional…. Also very cute and funny!! I will staying here again!! Thanks everyone!!

Property is older and not well maintained or kept. Parking sucked. Restaurant had limited food items available from the menu. Breakfast items was also very limited. Pool water smelled like oil / gas. Customer service was non-existent. I should’ve done my homework and gone with other options that I found out about later.

Unexpected very loud parties, no warnings, No concern for older, family guests. All parties and party goers were given special treatment.

Was there for only a 3 day stay, but i could have stayed longer. Housekeeping kept our room clean, the in house restaurant was handy for something small or an actual meal. Staff was great. Hope to be back again next year.

Such a nice place to stay with a big pool and excellent restaurant right on the water. We really enjoyed morning coffee listening to the waves.
