Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found if you plan ahead. It's highly recommended to book your flight early to get the best deals.

For travelers on a tighter budget or those who prefer a more scenic journey, bus travel is an option, though it is considerably longer. Buses depart from various terminals in Manila, primarily heading towards Batangas port, where you would then take a ferry to Puerto Princesa. This entire journey can take upwards of 24 hours. While less common for direct travel from Manila, bus services are more prevalent for inter-island travel within Palawan, connecting Puerto Princesa to towns like El Nido and Coron.

Driving your own vehicle is generally not a practical option for most travelers coming from Luzon due to the significant distance and the need for ferry crossings. However, for those already within Palawan, driving is feasible. Road conditions have improved over the years, but it's always wise to check the latest updates. For most travelers coming from afar, booking a flight is the most efficient method to start your Puerto Princesa adventure.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa experiences a tropical climate, with two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, lower humidity, and calmer seas, making it ideal for island hopping, diving, and exploring the famous Underground River. The weather is consistently pleasant, perfect for outdoor activities.

The wet season runs from June to October. While this period can bring occasional rainfall, it doesn't typically mean continuous downpours. Showers are often short-lived, and you can still enjoy plenty of sunshine. Traveling during the wet season can offer a more laid-back atmosphere with fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. However, it's advisable to monitor weather forecasts, as typhoons can occasionally affect the region during these months.

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the shoulder months of November and May are often recommended. These periods fall at the beginning and end of the dry season, offering pleasant conditions without the peak season intensity. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Puerto Princesa offers its unique charm and attractions year-round.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Puerto Princesa is complete without indulging in the local culinary scene. A must-try is the famous Tamilok, a type of woodworm found in mangrove areas, often served fresh or fried. While its appearance might be unusual, its taste is surprisingly delicious, often described as briny and slightly sweet. Many local eateries and seafood restaurants in Puerto Princesa offer this unique delicacy.

Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, is another local favorite. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or mackerel, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. The tangy and spicy flavors are incredibly refreshing, especially in the tropical heat. You'll find excellent Kinilaw in most restaurants and even in smaller carinderias around the city, showcasing the freshness of Palawan's seafood.

For those who love grilled dishes, look for freshly grilled seafood like squid, fish, and prawns. Puerto Princesa is known for its abundant seafood, and grilling is a popular preparation method. Many restaurants offer a 'paluto' service where you can select your fresh catch and have it cooked to your preference. This allows you to savor the natural flavors of the seafood at their best.

Don't forget to try some local sweets and snacks. Halo-halo, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, and topped with ice cream, is a perfect way to cool down. You can also find various kakanin (rice cakes) and local pastries in markets and bakeries. Exploring these local flavors is an integral part of the Puerto Princesa experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipino culture is generally warm and hospitable, and Puerto Princesa is no exception. Locals are known for their friendliness and willingness to help. When interacting, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. It's customary to show respect to elders and be mindful of local customs, especially when visiting religious sites. Dress modestly when entering churches or other sacred places.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, making it a comfortable destination for travelers. However, like any city, it's wise to take standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets or terminals. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. For transportation, use reputable taxi services or tricycles and agree on the fare beforehand if a meter isn't used.

In case of emergencies, it's good to have key contact numbers handy. The local police emergency number is typically 911. For medical assistance, inquire at your hotel for the nearest clinic or hospital. Having a reliable internet connection is helpful, and several apps can enhance your travel experience. Consider downloading ride-hailing apps if available, local map applications for navigation, and perhaps a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may not speak English fluently.

For managing your travel plans and bookings, the Traveloka app is indispensable. It allows you to easily book flights, hotels, and even attractions, all in one place. We did get the chance to get a beach view room. On our night we stayed in acroom just beside the water compressor whichvwas extremely loud. The air conditioning facial was not inserted properly and made loud shaking noise every time the compressor would kick in to cool the room. The room itself was good all things considered. Lsst but not least the people occupying the room above us were constantly moving some furniture which did not help our noisy situation. After complaining in the morning and a total lack of sleep on our first night, they gladly moved us up the second floor with a low noisevA/C. The hotel needs some TLC but the beach and pool make up for some. Don't expect a swimmers beach!

Loved this place. The beach isn’t much good for swimming, but the pool was great. Wonderful staff, good restaurant. And the excursions were well worth the small price.

The staff, the service we're very attentive to my needs and responded as expected. Staff are well trained. The food served and good quality was excellent which surprised me being that the hotel was quite small. Good job to the chefs, cooks, servers and support staff there at the restaurant

The staff is really kind and the room spacious, however the aircon makes so much noise that is really hard to sleep. Also there’s nothing around the hotel and you’re ‘hostage’ of the hotel restaurant which sells considerably overpriced things. If they invested a bit more on the hotel surroundings and also offered more options at the hotel, like a spa for example, it would make the place a lot more attractive. The location is really bad and far from everything. They only have a free shuttle at night but that doesn’t even take you to the city centre… you end up spending a lot of money with tricycles. Other than that it’s a nice place.

I loved being right on the beach. It is pretty far from downtown Puerto Princesa, so you have to take a trike into town, but the pool and beach are lovely.

Property was nice. Staff was super helpful. But the beach was terrible. A lots of sea weed. No place to swim. You had to walk a very long distance just to get to the water. Nothing to really do there. They charge for breakfast. They only had 8 beers and they ran out. We walked both ways on the beach for thirty minutes.there was nothing to do. The best place was the sari sari store.

Nice Beach front Hotel great service, clean and friendly staff, just be aware that there is only the hotel restaurant nearby and you can't buy a cold drink or anything nearby. Moto taxis are available to take you places, it would be nice to have a mini fridge in the rooms, overall we had a great stay. Thanks to the wonderful staff.

Staff were friendly and courteous. They are very attentive to our needs. The hotel itself needs renovation. Bathroom tiles are dirty, I saw a roach in the bathroom . Road leading to the hotel needs to be paved. It’s also dark and will not recommend people to walk at night. Their main dining area needs to be air conditioned so there will be no birds and insects crawling on our food. The staff needs to pay attention with their utensils since I had to point out the dirt from the plate. Overall I say our stay was okay. It has a beautiful view of the beach and the sunrise from our room.
