The diving was awesome ... something new every dive. Guides (Ace) were very skilled and spotted all the things we wanted to see on our muck diving treasure hunts. Resort staff and manager were super friendly and sorted a couple of our trips outside the property. Trip to Oslob went well with total round trip 6am to 1pm and no wait in any queue to see those wonderful whale sharks. Another day trip to the Baslay hotsprings we did by scooter, what fun! Beautiful Tokamak restaurant was a great place to eat. Overall, no complaints with Mike's, peaceful and diving at the pace that suits you.

Your Travel Guide to Dauin as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dauin from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers coming from Manila or other major cities like Cebu or Davao, the most efficient way to reach Dauin is by air to Dumaguete Airport (DGT). Several airlines operate flights to Dumaguete, and you can often find competitive fares if you book in advance. Use Traveloka to compare prices and book your book flight tickets, which typically take around 1.5 to 2 hours from Manila.

From Dumaguete Airport, Mike's Dauin Beach Resort is approximately a 30-40 minute drive south. You can opt for a taxi service available at the airport, or arrange for a transfer with the resort beforehand. The cost for a taxi might range from PHP 500 to PHP 800, depending on negotiation and current rates. This journey offers pleasant views of the coastal road.

Alternatively, if you are traveling from nearby islands or prefer a more extensive journey, you might consider ferry services to Dumaguete port, followed by land travel to Dauin. However, for most travelers originating from Luzon or Mindanao, flying remains the most practical and time-saving option. Planning your transport in advance ensures a smoother arrival in Dauin.

Best Time to Visit Dauin

The Philippines generally experiences a tropical climate, and Dauin is no exception. The dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the best time to visit for most travelers. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming, diving, and exploring the local attractions.

The period between December and February often sees the most pleasant weather, with cooler temperatures and minimal rainfall. This is also when many local festivals occur, adding a cultural dimension to your visit. However, this peak season can also mean higher accommodation prices and more crowds at popular spots.

The wet season runs from June to October, characterized by higher humidity and a greater chance of rain, often in the form of short, intense downpours. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower rates, it's important to be prepared for weather disruptions. Diving conditions can also be affected by rougher seas during this time. For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or May.

Food and Dining Near Dauin — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Negros Oriental, and Dauin by extension, offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects Filipino flavors with local twists. When in Dauin, make sure to try Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that is perfect for the tropical climate. You can often find this in local eateries or even at the resort.

Another local specialty to seek out is SUTUKIL, a cooking method popular in the Visayas region, which stands for Sugba (grill), Tuwa (stew), and Kilaw (raw/marinated). Many restaurants offer this, allowing you to choose your fresh seafood and have it prepared in your preferred style. It’s a fantastic way to sample the local catch.

Don't leave Dauin without trying some of the local delicacies. Negros Oriental is known for its delicious pastries and sweets. Look for treats like *piaya* or other baked goods made with local ingredients. These make for great pasalubong (souvenirs) for friends and family back home. Exploring local markets can lead you to these authentic flavors.

For a more substantial meal, try some of the regional noodle dishes or hearty stews. Many small carinderias (local eateries) offer affordable and authentic Filipino meals. Engaging with locals can often lead you to the best hidden spots for delicious and genuine regional cuisine.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Dauin

The people of Negros Oriental are known for their gentle demeanor and hospitality, embodying the spirit of the "City of Gentle People." When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. Respecting local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas, is appreciated.

Safety in Dauin is generally good, as it is a relatively peaceful town. However, as with any travel, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For any emergencies, local police assistance can be sought through standard emergency numbers.

When traveling in the Philippines, having a reliable mobile connection is essential. Consider getting a local SIM card upon arrival for affordable data access. Useful apps include Google Maps for navigation, Grab for ride-hailing services (though availability might be limited in Dauin compared to larger cities), and a translation app if you're not fluent in Tagalog or Cebuano.

For managing your travel bookings and staying updated on your itinerary, the Traveloka app is indispensable. It allows you to easily access your hotel reservations, flight details, and even explore local attractions. Having these tools readily available will enhance your travel experience in Dauin and the surrounding regions.

Mike's really grew on us over the course of a 5-day 6-night stay. The friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff is infectious, this attitude affects all the guests; after a few days of hanging out, diving, eating with the other guests, you find everyone's happy, everyone's a friend. The resort has three parts: the hotel, the restaurant, and the dive operation. The hotel is nice but not deluxe, the room was very clean, spacious, and comfortable. The bed was so-so but not out of line for this price point, as were the provided amenities. Housekeeping was great, any requests were immediately looked after. The best review goes to the dive shop, headed by accommodating and friendly Nic. After deciding not to do our planned Advanced Open Water course, Nic set us up with two day trips diving at Apo Island which is a must-do for any diver. Novice divers, we were paired with divemaster Romel. Although not taking specific lessons from him, he was a most patient and helpful teacher, especially for my wife who felt very comfortable and safe diving with him. He also had amazing eyes, able spot so many interesting things. I kept trying to find something before he saw it but generally to no avail. I think the lowest review goes to the restaurant. The food we tried was just OK, but worse was the slow service. Example - breakfast ordered the night before for 7:00, we got coffee at 7:20, breakfast, just fresh fruit at 7:30, no one else in the restaurant. Still, really enjoyed our stay!

Great resort but not so vegan friendly if you are vegan there are only 2 meals on the menu and owner not sympathetic to vegan choices. This was our second visit

Very charming resort and they do a great job of helping you with learning to dive or diving trips. We did a discover diving trip which was a lot of fun, what a great experience! Also did a snorkeling trip to Apo Island which was fun. The food is quite good and reasonable. The bedrooms are spacious with large bathrooms and I loved the variety of trees and greenery on the property. The staff were very friendly and the service was very good. I would definitely go back again.

This was the second stay at Mike's Dauin Beach Resort for my fiancee and me. We stay her last year and was VERY IMPRESSED. So we decide to book here again this year. Once again, we were not disappointed. We had s wonderful stay. The staff were very nice and very accommodating to our needs. The onsite restaurant makes delicious food that is reasonably priced. The rooms & grounds are clean, comfortable and well maintained. There was some renovations going on this year, but the construction was not too intrusive on our stay. Once Again, we had a GREAT STAY and would happily recommend it to anyone who is looking for a wonderful place to stay and unwind while In the Dumaguete area.

The resort is a small, nice and comfortable feeling place. The accommodations are clean and equally simple. It is a fair price for what you get, nothing more and nothing less. The food is pretty good with a flair for the Mexican cuisine. The staff is nice and definitely makes an effort to ensure satisfaction. I am not really sure I would go back but that is not really the fault of the resort, it is just not my cup of tea kind of place and I am not a diver either. Have been wanting to try it for a while due to the high marks I have seen it get in reviews. I am glad I did and I am glad it was only for a short stay. Met my needs at the time. Thank You.

The property and gardens are beautiful - for those of us not fond of pets while eating - something the owners can think about with the dogs around the property …. Staff was phenomenal and picturesque property ! The Filipino aesthetics were on point and food pricing was excellent !

The resort was not as big as expected. The wait for restaurant food was too long, but it tasted great. The beach was not as good for snorkeling.

Room too small for the price and breakfast not included. Bed mattress too think. Bed too narrow. Air condition old. No safe box in room. Internet wifi only works close to the bar area. They have the potential but they have to invest in the business. Not comparable with properties beneath.
