Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, the journey to Boracay Island typically begins with a flight. From Manila (MNL), numerous airlines offer daily flights to Caticlan Airport (MPH), which is the closest airport to Boracay. These flights are generally short, lasting about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect prices to range from approximately PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip if booked strategically.

Kalibo International Airport (KLO) is another option, often with more budget-friendly flight deals, but it requires a longer land transfer of about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the Caticlan Jetty Port. Booking your book flight well in advance is recommended, especially during peak seasons.

If you prefer a more economical, albeit longer, journey, bus travel is a viable option, particularly from Luzon. From Metro Manila, you can take a bus directly to Caticlan. Several bus companies operate this route, with journeys typically lasting between 10 to 12 hours. The cost for a bus ticket usually ranges from PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500, depending on the bus class (e.g., ordinary, de luxe).

This option is best for those who don’t mind extended travel time and want to save on airfare. From the Visayas, like Cebu, you might need to combine ferry and bus travel, or opt for a flight to Caticlan or Kalibo.

For travelers coming from Mindanao, such as Davao, flying is almost always the most practical choice. Direct flights from Davao (DVO) to Caticlan (MPH) or Kalibo (KLO) are available, though sometimes connecting flights through Manila might be necessary. The total travel time, including layovers, can range from 4 to 7 hours. Alternatively, one could fly to Iloilo or Roxas City and then take a bus and ferry, but this is significantly more time-consuming.

Regardless of your starting point, remember that after reaching Caticlan Jetty Port, you will need to pay terminal and environmental fees before boarding the boat to Boracay Island.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

Boracay Island experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and pleasant temperatures, making it ideal for beach activities, swimming, and water sports. The Amihan winds, blowing from the northeast, bring cooler and drier air.

This period is perfect for those who want to maximize their time outdoors and enjoy the island’s famous White Beach under ideal conditions.

The wet season, from June to October, is characterized by the Habagat winds, which blow from the southwest. This can bring occasional rainfall and stronger waves, particularly on the western side of the island. However, the wet season also means fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for flights and accommodation, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers or those who prefer a more tranquil atmosphere.

Even during the wet season, there are often periods of sunshine, and the island remains beautiful and enjoyable. Many find the off-peak months offer a different, more relaxed charm.

For a balanced experience, the shoulder months of November and May can be particularly rewarding. You often get the tail end of the good weather in November or the beginning of it in May, with slightly fewer crowds than the absolute peak of December to February. Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on your priorities. If guaranteed sunshine and calm waters are paramount, aim for the dry season.

If you’re looking for a more laid-back vibe and better deals, consider the shoulder months or even the early part of the wet season.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary heritage, and Boracay Island offers a delightful array of local flavors. One dish you absolutely must try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh, raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. The tangy, zesty flavors are incredibly refreshing, especially in the tropical heat.

You’ll find excellent Kinilaw at many local eateries and even some beachfront restaurants, often prepared with the day’s freshest catch.

Another local favorite that showcases the island’s seafood bounty is Grilled Liempo. This is marinated pork belly, grilled to perfection, resulting in a smoky, savory, and slightly sweet flavor with a delightful char. It’s often served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce and garlic rice. Many small carinderias and restaurants around Station 2 and D'Mall offer delicious versions of this Filipino barbecue staple. The simplicity and deliciousness of grilled meats are a consistent hit with Filipino palates.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is a characteristic Filipino dessert that you’ll find everywhere. This popular treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream, all mixed together. The name itself means "mix-mix," and that’s exactly what you do before digging in. It’s the perfect way to cool down and satisfy your cravings after a day under the sun.

Look for local spots that offer generous portions and a good variety of toppings.

Seafood lovers should also seek out fresh Oysters. Boracay, being an island, has access to fresh oysters, often served raw with a squeeze of calamansi and a dash of soy sauce or vinegar. They are a delicacy that offers a taste of the sea. While not a specific dish, enjoying freshly shucked oysters while watching the sunset is a simple yet profound pleasure that many Filipino travelers cherish. Ask locals for recommendations on where to find the freshest ones.

Finally, don't leave Boracay without trying some local seafood barbecue. Many stalls and restaurants set up grills along the beach, especially in the evenings, offering a variety of fresh seafood like squid, shrimp, and fish, marinated and grilled to perfection. The smoky aroma fills the air, and the taste is simply divine. It’s a casual yet satisfying dining experience that embodies the relaxed island vibe.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

Boracay Island, while a popular tourist destination, retains a strong sense of local culture, primarily influenced by the Ati indigenous people and the surrounding Visayan communities. While the island is generally welcoming, it’s always wise to be mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

Safety is a priority for any traveler. Boracay Island is generally safe, but like any popular tourist spot, petty theft can occur. Always keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in busy areas like Station 2 and D'Mall. It’s advisable to use tricycles for transportation and agree on the fare beforehand, or ensure the driver uses the meter if available. For water activities, always choose reputable operators and heed safety instructions.

In case of emergencies, the local police can be reached at [Insert local emergency number if available, otherwise omit].

For a smoother trip, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigating the island. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used. If you plan on booking activities or tours, the Traveloka app is your go-to for finding and booking attractions and accommodations. Having these tools on your smartphone can significantly enhance your travel experience, making it easier to get around, stay connected, and manage your bookings.

Remember to stay hydrated, especially during the hot months, and use sunscreen to protect your skin from the strong tropical sun. Embrace the relaxed island pace, be open to new experiences, and you’ll find Boracay Island to be a truly rewarding destination. The local community is generally friendly and helpful, so don’t hesitate to ask for directions or recommendations if you need them.

Well located. Walking distance to beachfront. Budget friendly booking at last minute before new years day. Bathroom needs an upgrade. Privately owned hence service, professionalism, amenities and experience is lower.

Great location. Great to get out to the beach or restaurants. The place needs a little tidy but was very clean and comfortable. It is good for the price. The staff is as good as anywhere I have been and thats 67 different countries and counting. Really helpful and always kind.

Liked: Great location and price. Staff very friendly and helpful. Didn’t like: Had to ask 2 times to get the hot water sorted out and access to hotel only via small street full of puddles.

I booked online because it looked ok and I didn’t read reviews . We arrived 2 hours before check in. They charged us a fee to check in early . The road/walkway is muddy and puddles of water everywhere. It would be impossible to walk at night . The room wasn’t clean. Hair in the bathroom and on the toilet. Mosquitos everywhere inside the room. One bedroom comes with a bug light if that tells you anything . We walked straight to the beach and found a nice hotel and booked it . Walked back and checked out. Staff wasn’t friendly . The staff at uptown were very friendly .

Staff were very accommodating. Great service. Room is clean. I just have to comment about the cleanliness of the floor. It wasn’t that clean immaculately as I saw some hair and a piece of bamboo broom. But it’s all good. 😊 We had a great stay. I would recommend this hotel as it’s very convenient.

The first impression of the hotel is the entrance. A muddy path with trip hazards. Forget trying to wheel a nice suitcase up the entrace path. The rooms were fine. Clean and a good size. But you better hope you are not on the 4th floor. Quite a walk up the stairs with no lift. There are basically no facilities. No pool, bar, restaurant, deck chairs. Your only option for entertainment is a 5 minute walk down an uneven and muddy path to the beach. Its negotiable during the day time, but a bit hazardous at night. Overall not my idea of a 3 star hotel.

The place is new so it’s neat, staff are friendly. I can only say 3 negative feedback: entrance to the hotel, the keycard not working and no water heater or the water heater is not working.

Staffs are friendly and welcoming. They let us check in early for free. Rooms are clean and okay. I just wish they would put a broom on the room so we could sweep the sands that accumulated from our shoes. Best of all are the dogs at the lobby. The only downside is that there's no elevator which makes it hard going up and down especially if ur pregnant or have a toddler or with a senior.
