Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular route for many Filipinos. The most common and economical way is by bus. Numerous bus companies operate daily trips from various terminals in Metro Manila, including Cubao and Pasay. The journey typically takes around 6 to 8 hours, depending on traffic conditions and the specific route taken. Bus fares usually range from PHP 700 to PHP 1,200, offering a budget-friendly option.

For those seeking a faster travel experience, flying is an option, though direct flights to Baguio's Loakan Airport are limited and often expensive. Many travelers opt to book flight tickets to Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga, which is about a 2 to 3-hour drive from Baguio. From Clark, you can take a bus or arrange for a private transfer to reach the Summer Capital. Flight prices can vary significantly, but booking in advance can secure better deals.

Driving your own vehicle is another popular choice, especially for families or groups who want the flexibility to explore Baguio and its surroundings at their own pace. The primary routes are the NLEX-SCTEX-TPLEX expressway leading to the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), and then connecting to the Aspiras-Palispis Highway or the Kennon Road. Be aware that Kennon Road can be steep and winding, and is sometimes closed due to weather conditions.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a pleasant, cool climate year-round, making it an attractive destination anytime. However, the coolest months are typically from December to February, with temperatures sometimes dropping to as low as 15 degrees Celsius. This period is also considered peak season due to the Christmas holidays and the Panagbenga Festival in February, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices.

The "rainy season" in Baguio generally runs from June to October. While you can expect frequent rainfall during these months, the showers are often intermittent, and the city remains accessible. Visiting during the shoulder months, such as March to May (dry season but before the peak summer rush) or November, can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists. This can be an ideal time to enjoy the city's attractions more peacefully.

For travelers seeking a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially better rates on accommodation, visiting outside of major holidays and festivals is recommended. The cooler months are undeniably appealing, but the slightly warmer, less crowded periods can also provide a wonderful Baguio experience. Consider your priorities—whether it's the coldest weather, specific events, or a more tranquil visit—when planning your trip.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio is renowned for its culinary scene, offering a delightful array of local flavors. A must-try is the Baguio Strawberry, famous for its sweetness and vibrant red color. You can enjoy them fresh, in milkshakes, or as part of delicious strawberry taho, a warm soy pudding topped with tapioca pearls and strawberry syrup. Look for stalls selling these treats, especially near tourist spots.

Another local specialty is the Ube Jam, a sweet spread made from purple yam. Its rich, creamy texture and distinct flavor make it a popular pasalubong (souvenir). Many local bakeries and souvenir shops offer high-quality ube jam. Pair it with pandesal or toast for a delightful breakfast or snack. The unique taste is something many Filipino travelers look forward to when visiting the region.

For a more savory experience, try the Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish. This unique dish involves a specific preparation method that tenderizes the meat, often chicken or pork, and is typically cooked with etag (smoked or salted pork) and vegetables like sayote. Its distinct flavor profile is a true taste of the highlands and is best enjoyed at local eateries that specialize in Cordilleran cuisine.

Don't leave Baguio without trying the local coffee. The Benguet region is known for its coffee beans, and a freshly brewed cup offers a robust and aromatic experience. Many cafes and restaurants serve locally sourced coffee, providing a perfect way to warm up on a cool Baguio morning or afternoon. Enjoying a cup of Benguet coffee is a simple yet satisfying way to connect with the local produce.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and a culture that blends indigenous Cordilleran traditions with modern influences. When interacting with residents, politeness and respect are always appreciated. Learning a few basic phrases in Ilocano or Kankanaey, if possible, can be a nice gesture, though English and Tagalog are widely understood. Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas like condominiums.

Safety in Baguio is generally good, but like any city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas or public transport. Avoid walking alone late at night in poorly lit areas. If you encounter any issues, the local police can be reached at their emergency hotline. It’s also helpful to have the contact details of your accommodation readily available.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are widely used in Baguio for convenient transportation. Navigation apps such as Google Maps are invaluable for finding your way around the city's streets. For weather updates, especially during the rainy season, a reliable weather app can help you plan your day accordingly. Having these tools on your smartphone can significantly enhance your travel experience.

The property is overpriced with the condition of the property itseluninstalled AC unit, towel rack in the bathroom falling, plugs of lamps and hair dryer need adaptors, bathroom no shower cyst rain o divider to prevent water from the shower to spill the entire toilet and bath. Toiletries cheap kind, walls with fading paints, bedroom too small for a queen size bed, only a foot clearance of the 2 sides The bed is positioned against the wall. The Futon bed cushion is sagging. On top of the futon bed is the extra bed with an aluminum ladder to go up . The area is located along the major highway road. You can hear all kinds of vehicles passing by. Not enough parking. We have to leave our car key to the security guard so they can move your car. One night we have to park by the gas station for a 100 pesos gratuity pay. Do you think this kind of accommodation is priced at 7200 pesos for 2 nights compared to an overnight accommodation in a 3 or 4 star hotel in Metro Manila at 2500 pesos per night with breakfast included and customer service available at sight. The unit is a condo unit but it needs upgrade to sell it at their current price. The unit is too tight.
