Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers, reaching Makati from within Metro Manila is generally straightforward, with numerous options available. If you're coming from other parts of the capital region, taxis, ride-sharing services like Grab, and the MRT/LRT train systems are the most common modes of transport. For instance, from Cubao or Quezon City, you can take the MRT to Ayala Station or Buendia Station, both of which are central to Makati.

A bus ride from various points in Metro Manila is also an economical option, with routes often passing through major Makati thoroughfares. Expect bus fares to range from PHP 20 to PHP 50 depending on the origin.

Traveling to Makati from major Philippine cities like Cebu or Davao typically involves flying into one of Manila's international airports (NAIA Terminals 1, 2, 3, or 4). From NAIA, you have several choices to reach Makati. The most convenient is a taxi or Grab, which can cost between PHP 300 to PHP 600 depending on the terminal and traffic, taking approximately 30-60 minutes.

Alternatively, you can take an airport bus service or a public bus that heads towards the city, which is more budget-friendly but can take longer. For those planning their trip, it's always wise to book flight tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure better fares, which can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip depending on the airline and booking time.

For travelers coming from Luzon's other regions, inter-provincial buses are a viable option. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila, such as those in Cubao or Pasay, offer routes to various points in Makati. Bus journeys from Northern Luzon can take anywhere from 6 to 10 hours, with fares typically ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500. Similarly, from Southern Luzon, bus trips might range from 3 to 6 hours.

Driving your own vehicle is also an option, with major expressways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) connecting to Metro Manila's road network, eventually leading to Makati. Toll fees will apply, and travel time can vary significantly based on traffic.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, generally from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity and less rainfall, making it ideal for walking around, visiting outdoor attractions, and enjoying the city's al fresco dining options. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 33°C.

This period, especially from December to February, is considered the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds at popular spots and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season runs from May to October, bringing with it higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this might deter some outdoor activities, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for hotels and flights, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. The rain can also bring a refreshing coolness to the city.

If you choose to visit during this time, it's advisable to pack an umbrella or raincoat and plan your activities to include more indoor options like museums, shopping malls, and restaurants. Despite the rain, Makati remains a dynamic city with plenty to offer year-round.

For a balanced experience, the shoulder months of November and May can be excellent choices. You can often enjoy good weather with fewer crowds than the absolute peak season. These periods offer a good compromise, allowing you to experience Makati's energy and attractions comfortably without the intense heat of the dry season or the consistent rain of the wet season.

Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on your priorities: for guaranteed sunshine and outdoor comfort, aim for the dry season; for budget savings and fewer people, consider the wet season; or for a good mix, explore the shoulder months.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Makati is a culinary melting pot, offering everything from high-end international cuisine to authentic Filipino comfort food. A must-try for any Filipino traveler is **Adobo**, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken, pork, or a combination, the savory and slightly tangy flavor profile, achieved through soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a taste of home.

In Makati, you can find excellent versions in traditional Filipino restaurants or even in more modern establishments that put a contemporary spin on this classic. Look for places that slow-cook their adobo to tender perfection.

Another essential dish is **Sinigang**, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, beef, or seafood, and tamarind broth. The sourness is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. Many Filipino eateries in Makati will offer sinigang, each with their own subtle variations. The tartness can be adjusted, but the core comforting flavor remains. It’s a dish that evokes a sense of home and is perfect for a hearty meal.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, **Inihaw na Liempo** (grilled pork belly) is a popular choice. Marinated and grilled to smoky perfection, the crispy edges and tender meat are a delight. Often served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce, it’s a simple yet incredibly satisfying dish. You'll find this at many Filipino restaurants and even at some street food stalls in and around Makati, offering an authentic taste of Filipino barbecue culture.

Don't leave Makati without trying **La Paz Batchoy**, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo. This rich broth, filled with noodles, pork offal, shrimp, and vegetables, is a flavorful and filling meal. While not exclusively a Makati dish, its popularity means you can find authentic and delicious renditions in many Filipino eateries across the city, offering a taste of regional Filipino cuisine.

Exploring the local food scene is a significant part of the travel experience, and Makati provides ample opportunities to savor these beloved Filipino flavors.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

When interacting, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders or those in authority, showing respect. While Makati is one of the safest cities in Metro Manila, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions.

Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets or public transport, and keep your valuables secure. Avoid displaying expensive items openly.

For emergencies, the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. For specific local police assistance in Makati, you can contact the Makati Police Department at (02) 8817-2930. It's also a good idea to have the contact details for your hotel readily accessible. When using taxis or ride-sharing services, ensure the meter is used or the fare is agreed upon beforehand. For navigating the city, especially if you're unfamiliar with the routes, using navigation apps is highly recommended.

Essential apps for your trip include Grab, which is indispensable for booking rides (car and motorcycle taxis), food delivery, and even grocery delivery. Google Maps is excellent for navigating the streets and finding public transport routes. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used for staying in touch with family and friends back home. Chill spot at rooftop and the gym is really clean. Room is good enough for sleepover, has its own oven and ref, worth the price rather than wasting hours in traffic.

I love it 's proximity to my office. A convenient way for my family to stay safe and for me to have a convenient stay by my office in bgc.

Highly recommended. Aside from being one of the cheapest dormitels near bgc. The room was clean and the staffs are friendly. This was my second stay with oyo Amsterdam. Looking forward for the next one. :)
