Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common way to reach Boracay Island from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights typically land at either Caticlan Airport (MPH) or Kalibo International Airport (KLO). From Manila, airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer numerous daily flights to both airports. Fares can range from PHP 2,500 to PHP 7,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book your flight. Travel time to Caticlan is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, while flights to Kalibo are slightly longer.

From Caticlan Airport, it's a short tricycle ride (around 5-10 minutes, PHP 50-100) to the Caticlan Jetty Port. From there, you'll take a 15-minute boat ride (PHP 50 terminal fee, PHP 150-300 boat fare depending on type, plus PHP 100 environmental fee) to Boracay's Cagban Port. If you arrive at Kalibo International Airport, you'll need to take a bus or van (around 1.5 to 2 hours, PHP 200-300) to Caticlan Jetty Port before proceeding with the boat transfer to Boracay.

For those preferring land travel, buses are available from various terminals in Luzon, such as Cubao or Pasay in Metro Manila, heading towards Caticlan. This is a much longer journey, typically taking 10-12 hours, with bus fares ranging from PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,800. This option is best suited for budget-conscious travelers who don't mind the extended travel time and wish to see more of the country en route.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

Boracay Island experiences two main seasons: the dry season (Amihan) from November to May, and the wet season (Habagat) from June to October. The dry season is generally considered the best time to visit, with calmer seas, sunny skies, and lower humidity, making it ideal for beach activities and water sports. Peak season falls between December and February, and again during Holy Week and the summer months of April and May, when prices for accommodation and flights tend to be higher.

For travelers seeking a balance between good weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder months of November and May can be excellent choices. During these periods, you can still enjoy pleasant weather while potentially finding better deals on accommodation and flights. The wet season, while bringing a higher chance of rain, can offer a more tranquil experience and lower prices, though some water activities might be limited due to sea conditions.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in local flavors, and Boracay offers plenty. You absolutely must try Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, typically made with fresh raw fish (like tuna or tanigue) marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly complements the tropical climate. Look for it in local eateries and seafood restaurants along White Beach.

Another essential dish is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo, but widely enjoyed across the islands. It features a rich pork broth, noodles, pork offal, and is topped with chicharon (pork cracklings) and garlic. It’s a comforting and flavorful meal, perfect for a slightly cooler evening or after a long day of activities. Many local carinderias and restaurants serve this satisfying soup.

For seafood lovers, grilled specialties are a must. Freshly caught fish, squid, and prawns are often grilled to perfection and served with soy sauce, calamansi, and chili. Many beachfront restaurants offer a selection of fresh catches displayed daily, allowing you to choose your own seafood to be prepared. This is a characteristic Boracay dining experience, especially when enjoyed with a view of the sea.

Don't forget to try Halo-Halo for dessert. This iconic Filipino treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a colorful and refreshing way to end any meal. You can find various versions, from simple to elaborate, at local stalls and restaurants across the island.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and Boracay is no exception. A simple "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or showing respect goes a long way. Be mindful of local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites, though beach attire is perfectly acceptable on White Beach. Always ask permission before taking photos of people. The island is generally safe, but it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

For safety, keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. Stick to well-lit and populated areas at night. In case of emergencies, local police can be reached at [insert local emergency number if available, otherwise omit]. It's also a good idea to have the contact number for your hotel readily accessible. The local government often implements environmental regulations, so be sure to follow guidelines regarding waste disposal and beach conduct.

To enhance your trip, consider downloading a few useful apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is essential for navigating the island. For communication, apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used. If you plan on booking activities or tours on the go, having the Traveloka app handy will allow you to easily book attraction tickets or find last-minute deals.

Familiarize yourself with the local currency, the Philippine Peso (PHP). While some establishments might accept foreign currency, it's best to use Pesos for most transactions. ATMs are available on the island, but it's advisable to carry some cash, especially for smaller vendors and tricycle fares. I had an excellent stay for two nights. Service is outstanding and they even went out of their way to fulfill two special requests. The facilities and room are fine with great air conditioning and water pressure (important for me). Had an event at the Lind and this was a great alternative - go down to the lower level and the staircase to Lind lobby is in front of you. Don't even have to walk outside. Only small drawback was the breakfast - good and plentiful but selection a bit bare/basic.

Came for a destination wedding at the Lind and stayed 5 nights at the Pinnacle. Our family really enjoyed our stay. The rooms are nice (we were actually upgraded), the pools and beach access are great as well. The best part of the experience was the friendly and helpful staff. We used a number of hotel services like laundry, massages and booking water activities. We also arranged the airport transfer through them. They are always available and ready to help. I enjoyed the location as well. It was a little set apart from the chaos of the bars and restaurants on White Beach, but close enough to enjoy them as well. Overall great value. I would definitely consider staying here again in the future, or recommending this hotel to others looking to visit Boracay.

The Pinnacle is a fantastic hotel located at the far end of station 1 on White Beach. It’s very clean , the rooms are modern and spacious and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The restaurant and food are very nice. The only downside was the poor WiFi connectivity in our room, but when you’ve got White Beach on your doorstep WiFi is a minor niggle!!

Very affordable hotel. Close to the beach. Amenities could be better. They provide such a small amount of shampoo & body wash so you have to keep asking for more once you run out. They also throughly check your room before you check out (which has never happened to me before at any hotel we’ve stayed at). We forgot one hanger at the Lind as we were part of a wedding there and forgot to grab the hanger so they ended up charging us for it! They also have free breakfast which was ok.

Staff are very welcoming and they always greet us. We were 1 hour early for check in but rooms were ready. The also gave us drinks when we arrive in the lobby, very nive gesture. They are also quick in sorting our requests. We had a lovely stay. Thank you.

We were able to check in early at around 10:30AM, with a free upgrade also due to the fact that we have been waiting in the lobby for hours because of how early our flight was, which we were very satisfied about. The staff members were also very approachable and friendly. However, the breakfast buffet needs some improvement.

Overall a good hotel. Staff very helpful and polite. Room was very comfortable. Breakfast was not impressive especially the hot dishes. The worst part of the stay was the noise from outside the room. My room was on the ground floor right by the staircase. Everyday around 6 am there was pipe banging noise from outside. On the third day I went out to investigate. It turned out that a staff was sweeping floor and hitting the stair railing on every stroke. Apart from that, there were days with tourists hanging around the sitting area right outside my room chatting noisily also around 6 am. So everyday I was forced to wake up at 6 for either of these two reasons.

It’s a hidden gem, that’s for sure. Room was one of the best. They don’t have any signboard if you are ariving via the road, it’s in the Lind compound. Food was the Achilles heel of this hotel. Breakfast poor and lunch menu only consisted of pinay cuisin that too very tasteless and slow service. Otherwise, it’s one of the best resorts I stayed in.

Overall hotel is nice and clean. Location is far from shops. Can't see the beach from the hotel but it is only a 5 minute walk on the other side of another hotel. When you return from the beach there are about 3 flights of steps you have to walk up every time. Hotel drinks are expensive. No close restaurants except expensive beach front ones. Had an issue with the TV that took 2 days to fix. Breakfast was so so. Overall place is good because it is very clean and nice.

Super friendly staff. My room was clean on arrival, and the restaurant/bar was great for not being packed.unlike the other restaurants on the beach, it didn't feel like I was getting ripped off with subpar food l.
