Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common and efficient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on the origin city. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options are often available.

For those looking to travel by land and sea, it's a more time-consuming but potentially scenic option. This usually involves a ferry trip from Manila to other parts of Palawan, followed by a bus or van journey to Puerto Princesa. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Batangas port and then a ferry to Puerto Princesa. This route is best suited for travelers with ample time who wish to see more of the Philippines along the way.

When planning your trip, remember to check flight schedules and prices on platforms like Traveloka. Using the book flight feature can help you find the best deals and secure your seats, especially during peak travel seasons. Booking in advance is highly recommended to ensure availability and potentially lower costs for your journey to Palawan.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa experiences a tropical climate, with generally warm temperatures year-round. The dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the best time to visit for most travelers. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, which are ideal for island hopping tours, beach activities, and exploring the famous Underground River. This period generally sees higher tourist numbers.

The wet season runs from June to October. While this period can bring occasional rainfall, it doesn't necessarily mean constant downpours. Often, the rain comes in short, intense bursts, usually in the afternoon, followed by sunshine. Traveling during the wet season can offer a more laid-back atmosphere and potentially lower accommodation prices, making it a good option for wallet-conscious travelers who don't mind a bit of unpredictable weather.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Puerto Princesa, you absolutely must try Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh, raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate and is a staple in many local eateries and restaurants across Palawan.

Another local delicacy to savor is Tamilok. This is a type of woodworm found in mangrove areas, harvested and typically eaten raw, similar to oysters, often dipped in vinegar. While it might sound adventurous, it's a unique Palawan experience that many locals and daring tourists seek out. You can often find it in local markets or specialized restaurants that serve traditional Palawan cuisine.

For seafood lovers, grilled or steamed fresh catch is a must. Puerto Princesa, being a coastal city, offers an abundance of fresh seafood. From succulent prawns to various types of fish and squid, you can find them prepared in simple yet delicious ways at local carinderias and restaurants. Enjoying these fresh catches by the sea is a truly satisfying culinary experience for any Filipino traveler.

Don't forget to try some local sweets or delicacies. While not as famous as other dishes, exploring local bakeries or markets for unique treats can be a delightful part of your food journey. Trying these local flavors provides a deeper connection to the culture and the people of Puerto Princesa, making your trip more enriching.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and Puerto Princesa is no exception. A friendly greeting, a smile, and a polite demeanor go a long way when interacting with locals. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders or those in authority, showing respect. Understanding and respecting local customs will enhance your interactions and overall experience in the city.

When it comes to safety, Puerto Princesa is generally considered a safe city for tourists. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For transportation, it's advisable to use tricycles or taxis from reputable stands or arrange them through your hotel to ensure fair pricing.

In case of emergencies, it's good to have important contact numbers readily available. These include local police hotlines and your hotel's contact information. Having a reliable mobile network is also beneficial. Consider getting a local SIM card if you plan to stay connected extensively, as it can be more cost-effective for data and calls within the Philippines.

To make your trip smoother, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. Ride-hailing apps or local transport apps can be useful for getting around. Additionally, apps for weather forecasts and currency conversion can be helpful. For booking accommodations and activities, Traveloka is a comprehensive platform that simplifies your planning process.

It’s an affordable place. What I liked about them is that they are very accommodating when it comes to questions. There are mosquitoes, yes, but we found them in all the rooms we stayed in. So, if you just want to sleep for the night, this is an OK place. It’s quite far from the airport (5km), but it’s near Baker’s Hill. If you want to reach the hostel by commute, take a Sta. Monica multicab from Jollibee/ Caltex.

Perfect location when you plan to go to Crocodile Farm, Baker’s hill, Robinsons & etc. The residence is just across the Seedfarm/DOA. Great Wi-Fi connection and friendly staff. We had breakfast in bed since they don’t have a restaurant. The only down side was their CR, it’s a bir stinky & the toilet won’t flush. We got so tired after the long drive from El Nido and we don’t have enough time to complain. But it’s fine, the prima residences is still recommendable (I don’t have photos due to limited time).

5 stars and 2 thumbs up! Friendly, accommodating, and courteous employees. During my stay, they are taking care of a lost dog, they named the dog "Sumo"/"Sumu" short for "sumunod". Dahil sumunod nga lang naman sa kanila yung dog. Hahaha! Hope you'll be able to find the dog's family. If not, I know you'll take good care the dog. Thank you Prima Residences and Sumo for welcoming me in Prima! See you again! 😍😍😍

The room was very comfortable and cheap with mini ref, cable tv and heater! Power of wifi connection promise! We took a room with breakfast and never thought their menu would be delicious to choose from. In their coco coffee shop and serving only one owner's food which is also a thumb up of their theme and they are really delicious and you can't order any other dish at the cafe! 👍 Super friendly and very accommodating to their staff. Thank you!

Highly recommended. The place was really nice. The room was spacious and clean. They were even kind enough to provide us a different room for us to change from our island hopping trip as late check out in the room we occupied was not possible as someone has booked the room for the next day. Definitely a good deal and you get more than what you pay for.

The price we paid exceeded the services they offered. we had a room that, although cramped, was comfortable enough to have a good night sleep. we had a private bathroom, hot shower, airconditioning, and free breakfast during our stay. staff was also very accommodating and kind, feels like family. :) nice plus is the restaurant where we take our breakfast. it was cozy. would have loved to try their artisan ice cream but was not available then. hopefully we'll be able to visit again in the future.

Basic room with basic furniture with strong air conditioner. TV sound was broken and no hot water. It was clean and I was able to get deep sleep there. The front desk reception area looked like an old sari sari store. The refrigerator was working well but had lots of mold. Probably the best we can find during a super busy Lunar New Years weekend when other hotels are completely booked at that price range. The location was incredibly hard to find. The hotel signs are not showing well from both the road and the beach and trike don't know where it is or heard of it. We had to ask 12 local people for directions and even most local people did not hear of it. Only accessible by beach after walking 100 meters from the alley so this place is definitely backpacker or family style. There were lots of family oriented foreigners or backpackers staying but no romantic couples. I was transferred to Morenos Cottage on the second day with similar facilities. The restaurant next door serves excellent omelette. All laundry services including this area in boracay are overpriced per kilo from 70 to 140 per kilo using weighted scales so better to just buy detergent DIY.

The staff is friendly and helpfull. Clean rooms even given the nicer ones. The price is cheap but still get breakfast and other amenities. The location is close to a major road. Comfortable atmosphere and suitable for a place to rest.
