Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila is the most common method. Flight prices can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but you can often find round-trip fares from major cities like Cebu or Davao ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000. From NAIA, you can take a taxi, ride-sharing service, or the airport bus to reach Makati. Remember to book flight tickets early for better deals.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces in Luzon, taking a bus is a more economical option. Numerous bus companies operate routes to various terminals in Metro Manila, including those accessible to Makati. Bus fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500 depending on the origin city and bus class. From the bus terminals, you can transfer to a taxi or public utility jeepney (PUJ) to reach your final destination in Makati.

For those driving from other parts of Luzon, major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to Metro Manila. You will need to navigate through the city's road network to reach Makati. Be prepared for potential toll fees, which can add up, and always factor in significant travel time due to Metro Manila's notorious traffic, especially during peak hours.

Best Time to Visit Makati

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Makati is no exception. The dry season, generally from November to April, is considered the most pleasant time to visit. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city on foot or enjoying outdoor activities. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 35°C.

The wet season runs from May to October, characterized by higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower hotel rates, it can disrupt outdoor plans. However, the rain is usually short-lived, and indoor attractions remain accessible. For a comfortable trip, aim for the cooler, drier months.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. In Makati, you'll find a plethora of dining options, from high-end restaurants to local eateries. A must-try is Adobo, the unofficial national dish, featuring meat (usually chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. Its savory and tangy flavor profile is a true taste of Filipino home cooking.

Another iconic dish to seek out is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat or seafood, along with various vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The comforting warmth and distinct sourness of Sinigang are deeply loved by Filipinos and offer a unique gastronomic experience.

For those who enjoy grilled flavors, Lechon Kawali is a delightful option. This is crispy fried pork belly, boasting a perfectly crunchy exterior and tender, juicy meat inside. It's often served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce, enhancing its rich taste. You can find excellent versions of these dishes in many restaurants and food markets around Makati.

Don't forget to try Halo-Halo for dessert. This popular Filipino treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's a refreshing and visually appealing dessert that perfectly caps off any Filipino meal, especially during the warm weather.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to show respect to elders, and using terms like "po" and "opo" (for yes and a respectful particle) is appreciated. While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic Tagalog phrases can enhance your interactions.

When it comes to safety, Makati is generally considered one of the safer cities in Metro Manila, especially in its commercial and business districts. However, like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure, avoid displaying expensive items openly, and be cautious of petty theft. For emergencies, dial 911, which is the national emergency number.

To make your trip smoother, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used and offer a convenient way to book transportation. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are popular among locals. Having these apps on your smartphone will greatly assist your exploration of Makati.

It’s great to have quietness in the room. The location is limited choice to restaurants to eat.

i felt i was scammed this time. i booked one of their pricey room because of a balcony. only to have a non-view balcony with super wet floor. plus the aircon wasnt working fine. room was so warm. another thing is since we were given a room in the 2nd floor, all the noise including the foot steps are very troublesome and very inconvenient. it was very disappointing.

We stayed for three nights Nice, big and clean rooms. Can improve on amenities. We had to ask for replacement soap bars on second day

My husband said, he was up at 3am and no place to sit down. Pool and dinning areas are close. No large balcony to relax since he doesnt want us to wake up while using his phone. Overall, the place was good. Thank you
