Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for around PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip if booked strategically. To secure the best deals, it's recommended to book your flight well in advance.

For those looking for a more economical, albeit much longer, travel option, bus services are available, particularly from Manila. This journey usually involves a ferry crossing to Palawan. The total travel time can extend to 24-30 hours or more. While significantly cheaper, this option is best suited for travelers with ample time and a preference for overland and sea travel. The cost for bus and ferry combinations can range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 one way.

Driving to Puerto Princesa is possible for those coming from other parts of Palawan, but it is not a practical option for travelers from Luzon or the Visayas due to the geographical separation. The roads within Palawan are generally well-maintained, but the distances can be substantial. If you are already in Palawan and planning to drive, ensure your vehicle is in good condition and be prepared for long driving days. For most travelers from outside Palawan, booking a flight is the most efficient method.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

The ideal time to visit Puerto Princesa generally falls within the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, lower humidity, and calmer seas, making it perfect for island hopping, exploring the Underground River, and enjoying the beaches. The peak tourist season is typically from December to February, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights during this period.

The wet season, from June to October, brings occasional rainfall, which can range from brief showers to more prolonged downpours. While this season might see fewer tourists and lower prices, it can also lead to tour cancellations or disruptions due to weather conditions, especially for sea-based activities. However, the rain can also bring a lushness to the landscape, and you might find opportunities for more budget-friendly travel during these months if you are flexible with your plans.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Puerto Princesa, you absolutely must try Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and tangy dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent Kinilaw in many local restaurants and even at some stalls along the Puerto Princesa City Baywalk Park, offering a true taste of Palawan's coastal flavors.

Another local delicacy that deserves your attention is Tamilok. This is a type of woodworm that is harvested from mangrove trees and eaten raw, usually dipped in vinegar. While the appearance might be unusual for some, it's considered a delicacy by locals and adventurous eaters. It has a briny, slightly sweet taste and a unique texture. Trying Tamilok is an experience that truly connects you with the local culinary traditions of Palawan.

For a more substantial meal, look for dishes featuring fresh seafood. Puerto Princesa, being a coastal city, offers an abundance of seafood. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are commonly available and prepared in various delicious ways. Many restaurants along Rizal Avenue and near the baywalk serve freshly caught seafood, often grilled to perfection and served with rice and local condiments. This is a staple that showcases the bounty of the surrounding waters.

Don't leave Puerto Princesa without trying Halo-Halo, a fitting choice for Filipino dessert. While available throughout the Philippines, enjoying it in Palawan adds a special touch. This refreshing mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream is the perfect way to cool down after a day of exploring. You can find delicious Halo-Halo at local eateries and cafes across the city.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and Puerto Princesa is no exception. A common local custom is the "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority, showing respect. When visiting churches or local homes, it's customary to dress modestly. Understanding and practicing these simple courtesies will be greatly appreciated by the locals and enhance your interactions during your stay.

Puerto Princesa is generally a safe city for tourists. However, like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. It's also a good practice to use reputable transportation services, such as metered taxis or tricycles from designated stands. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911, and Adventist Hospital Palawan is a key medical facility nearby.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around the city and finding your way to attractions. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter situations where communication is a barrier, though English is widely spoken. For managing your itinerary and bookings, the Traveloka app is indispensable for booking flights, hotels, and activities seamlessly.

Another useful app could be a local ride-hailing service if available, or a general transportation app that lists local taxi numbers. Having offline maps downloaded can also be a lifesaver in areas with spotty internet connectivity. These digital tools can significantly streamline your trip, allowing you to focus more on enjoying the beauty and experiences Puerto Princesa has to offer.

The property was very unique and kichi. The theme was well covered but a little cluttered in our suite and it was hard to move around. Too many objects. The bathroom light switch fell apart and the shower had also fell off in our first night stay but the staff took care of it very quickly. Ok Google. We paid more than other people for the same excursions by 700 pesos and we are on the same bus. I believe it was incurred by the hotel but I could be wrong

The staff are very friendly. It is a hotel with island motif. The hotel seems quite aged and some functions do not work well in the bath room. Breakfast is basic. Big trucks often passed at night as the hotel is close to the port. The baywalk is about 5 minute walk from hotel.

It was our 2nd time to stay at this place, but 1st visit was more than 10 years ago... Pros: very friendly and helpful staff; the place is in a quite neighborhood but just minutes from the baywalk park and close to centre of town for shopping; the room which is nicely decorated with local and native materials is clean and bed is comfy; there is hot water in the shower and for a very affordable rate, you get a continental breakfast every morning... Cons: wifi signal is weak to medium on the hallways and non existent inside the rooms; cable tv has a choppy reception... Overall, we are happy with our stay and will stay here again in the future. If you are not too concerned about wifi and cable tv, then this place is highly recommended...

At Puerto Pension it was great staying at the hotel. It was clean and the service is superb. They are very helpful and they accommodate all the tours we wanted even for our car rentals. The only thing is that they turn off the water at night and one of the window you could open it outside our room. Didn’t feel safe. We found out that out when we already leaving the hotel. Overall it was great and good experience.

The property was close walking distance to the water baywalk. The rooms had everything you needed. Our room had a strong musty smell that didn't go away, but we only stayed for 2 nights. Go to the local travel agencies for excursions as the hotel is overpriced. It was nice that the hotel offered breakfast and airport shuttle.

This is in a nice quiet location near the water and the original part of town. The best thing is the fourth floor restaurant with spectacular views where you have the complementary breakfast. The rooms are clean and pleasant enough but need renovation. That said, pretty good value.

Really really nice room! Comfiest beds! Perfect location next to then Bay walk, which was great on an evening, however you’ll get quite a lot of noise from the bay walk too. Also walking distance to mall and markets! Jacuzzi was a nice touch, and staff very friendly and helpful with booking transfers

The balcony and grounds were particularly nice for relaxation. Good location close to town (walkable) but not in all the chaos. Helpful staff and tour booking. Close to Bay Walk for great dinner options.

We enjoyed are stay. Very cute atmosphere when you walk up. Very close to the baywalk and the cafe we loved Eightynine cafe, only a 5 minute walk to both. We have been traveling for 1.5 months and I think the best I have slept. Air con worked great and the fan even made it chilly which is how we love to sleep! But you don’t have to use both!

This gem was a complete lifesaver; close to Baywalk and very cool expat bar, Puerto Pension was ideal. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I liked so much that I booked all of my future Puerto Princesa stays at this location.

The staff are very friendly. It is a hotel with island motif. The hotel seems quite aged and some functions do not work well in the bath room. Breakfast is basic. Big trucks often passed at night as the hotel is close to the port. The baywalk is about 5 minute walk from hotel.
