Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, the quickest and most convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa is by air. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate regular flights from Manila (MNL) to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect to pay anywhere from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip if you book strategically. Booking your book flight in advance, especially during peak seasons, is highly recommended to secure better prices. Flights also operate from other key cities like Cebu (CEB) and Davao (DVO), though they might be less frequent and potentially more expensive.

If you're looking for a more budget-friendly option and have ample time, traveling by ferry is also possible, though it's a significantly longer journey. From Manila, you can take a ferry to Coron, Palawan, and then another ferry from Coron to Puerto Princesa. Alternatively, some routes might involve traveling by land to Batangas port and then taking a direct ferry to Puerto Princesa, though these direct routes are less common and schedules can change.

The ferry journey from Manila can take anywhere from 18 to 24 hours or more. While this option is considerably cheaper than flying, it requires a significant time commitment and is best suited for travelers who want to experience a different mode of travel and have a flexible schedule.

For those traveling from nearby islands or within Palawan, land travel is an option. Buses operate from various points in mainland Palawan, connecting to Puerto Princesa. For instance, from El Nido, a popular tourist destination, buses typically take around 5-6 hours to reach Puerto Princesa. The fare usually ranges from PHP 500 to PHP 800. These buses are generally comfortable and equipped with air conditioning.

If you are driving your own vehicle, you can take the Pan-Philippine Highway, which connects to the Puerto Princesa North Road and South Road, leading directly into the city. The drive from Manila by car would be extremely long, likely spanning over 24 hours with necessary stops, and involves multiple ferry crossings.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa experiences a tropical climate, which means it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, lower chances of rainfall, and calmer seas, making it ideal for island hopping tours, beach activities, and exploring the Underground River. The weather is consistently pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C.

This period also sees more crowds and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodation, so booking well in advance is crucial if you plan to visit during this time.

The wet season, from June to October, brings with it higher humidity and a greater chance of rainfall. While it might rain, these are often short, heavy downpours, and the sun can still shine through. This season offers a different charm, with lush greenery and fewer tourists, which can translate to more affordable travel options and a more relaxed atmosphere.

For travelers who don't mind occasional rain and are looking for a more tranquil experience, the wet season can be a great time to visit. It's also a good period for activities like diving and snorkeling, as visibility can still be excellent, and the marine life is abundant.

For Filipino travelers looking for a balance between good weather and manageable crowds, the shoulder months of November and May can be particularly appealing. These periods often offer a sweet spot, with the weather starting to stabilize towards the dry season or still holding pleasant conditions before the peak crowds arrive.

Ultimately, Puerto Princesa is a year-round destination, and the "best" time to visit depends on your personal preferences regarding weather, budget, and the kind of atmosphere you seek for your Palawan adventure.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Puerto Princesa, exploring the local culinary scene is as much an adventure as visiting its natural wonders. A must-try dish for any Filipino traveler is **Kinilaw**, the Filipino version of ceviche. In Palawan, the fresh catch from the surrounding waters is paramount. Expect a vibrant mix of raw fish (often tuna or tanigue), marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, chili, and sometimes coconut milk for a creamy twist.

The tanginess of the vinegar cuts through the richness of the fish, creating a refreshing appetizer or light meal. Look for it in local carinderias or seafood restaurants along the Baywalk for an authentic taste.

Another local specialty that highlights Palawan's bounty is **Tamilok**. This unique delicacy, often described as "woodworm," is actually a type of saltwater clam that bores into mangrove wood. It's typically eaten raw, much like kinilaw, with a generous squeeze of vinegar and a dash of chili and onions to mask its somewhat briny, slippery texture. While it might sound adventurous, trying Tamilok is a characteristic Puerto Princesa experience for the daring foodie.

Many local eateries and even some tour operators offer this as a unique tasting opportunity.

Seafood, in general, is king in Puerto Princesa, and you absolutely must indulge in freshly grilled fish and other marine delights. From succulent prawns to plump oysters and various types of local fish like lapu-lapu and talakitok, the options are endless. Many restaurants offer a "paluto" service, where you can select your fresh seafood from the market and have it cooked to your preference – grilled, steamed, or fried.

For a truly local experience, head to the local markets early in the morning to see the day's catch and then find a nearby eatery to have it prepared. The simplicity of preparation often allows the natural flavors of the seafood to shine through.

Don't leave Puerto Princesa without trying **Halo-Halo**, the iconic Filipino dessert, but with a Palawan twist. While the basic ingredients of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, and leche flan remain, local variations might include unique regional ingredients or a particularly rich leche flan. It’s the perfect way to cool down after a day under the sun. You can find excellent halo-halo at local dessert shops and restaurants throughout the city.

For a more substantial meal, consider trying **Chicken Inasal**, a popular Visayan dish that has found its way to Palawan, featuring chicken marinated in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, and annatto oil, then grilled over charcoal. The smoky flavor and tender meat are incredibly satisfying.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa is known for its friendly and hospitable locals, who often embody the Filipino spirit of "Bayanihan" or community cooperation. When interacting with residents, a simple "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas. Tipping is not mandatory but is always appreciated for excellent service.

Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas, and always ask permission before taking photos of people.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, with the city being a popular tourist destination. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to exercise common sense precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets or during evening strolls along the Baywalk. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit or unfamiliar areas late at night.

For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911, and Adventist Hospital Palawan is a reliable medical facility nearby. It's also a good idea to have the hotel's contact number readily available.

For a smoother trip, consider downloading a few essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is invaluable for finding your way around the city and estimating travel times. For communication, apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used by Filipinos. If you plan on booking tours or activities spontaneously, having the Traveloka app on your phone will allow you to easily book attraction tickets or find last-minute deals.

Having a local currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget.

First of all when i booked this placed it says airport transfer included when we got in the airport to get pick up they said that there’s a certain time to do that service so me and family got a taxi to get drop off in the hotel and also when we need to drop off back the airport pretty much not a good service. for sure I’m not going to recommend this property to my family and friends. Second the restrooms is outdated. And on our 3rd day the water tank broke so we cannot shower. Then after they have a sign that they offer to do the laundry so I ask them what time can we drop off and how long to get it done the front desk she said only few hours i received a text that they cannot finish on time so we have wait till next day to finish so horrible only few clothes i have to wait 24hours to get it done.So bad experienced first and last to stay in this property

The receptionist was not knowledgeable! The room had a lot of bugs. The breakfast was terrible. We were given cold foods and had to ask to have them microwaved. Had to walk 15 minutes to a convenient store to get water and snack. The hotel couldn’t give us water when we got in at 9pm.

WiFi is not good, very slow internet connection. They charge 900 pesos for a single towel that was stained with soda. The towel only cost 200-300 pesos when you buy it in the store. They charged too much for that.

Property offered “free” shuttle from the airport but stated it was “extra charge” of 600 pesos because it was after 4pm. Asked for a pillow, was told it was “extra charge.” There was a dirty towel hanging inside the closet when we arrived. The ceiling near the door had some weird, mystery stains that did not look like water damage or stains. The faucet and showerhead was rusted. The water pressure was so low that i had to crouch down to reach the faucet and wash off shampoo from my hair. The breakfast was lacking and I had a dead insect, a mosquito in the middle of my breakfast plate. The staff was not approachable especially when we were ordering from their restaurant. We were not given utensils nor served water. We had to discover on our own that we had to get it ourselves. We were “upgraded” to the family room so that we can have 2 twin beds and the beds looked like kids beds. We were not offered a room refresh nor our room cleaned during our 4 day/3night stay. I do not recommend anyone stay at this hotel.
