Great location being right on the cliff (as you might suspect) looking over the ocean where you can see fisherman and the occassional turtle. Woken up by birdsong and dodging hermit crabs who have scuttled up at night. They have some great public areas with 5 star views to eat your meals at the resort Very friendly and helpful staff, decent food and fairly basic but nice little cabins. Needs wifi in the rooms though, not just in bar area. Good food options in walking distance and don't forget to ask where the party is at.

Your Travel Guide to San Juan as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to San Juan from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to San Juan, Siquijor Island from Manila typically involves a combination of air and sea travel. The most common route is to book a flight to Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental, which is the closest major airport to Siquijor. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer flights from Manila (MNL) to Dumaguete (DGT). You can find competitive fares and book flight tickets conveniently through Traveloka. Flight durations are usually around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

From Dumaguete City, you will need to take a ferry or a fast craft to Siquijor Island. The ferry terminal is located near the city center. Several shipping lines operate this route, with trips usually taking about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the vessel. Fares for ferries can range from PHP 250 to PHP 400, making it a relatively affordable leg of the journey. Upon arrival at Siquijor port, you can then take a tricycle or motorcycle taxi to reach San Juan.

Alternatively, you could fly to Tagbilaran City in Bohol and take a ferry from there to Siquijor. This route might be longer and less direct for travelers coming from Manila. For those coming from other parts of the Philippines, checking flight connections to Dumaguete or Tagbilaran is the first step. Bus travel to ferry ports like Batangas or Lucena from Manila is also an option, but significantly extends travel time.

Best Time to Visit San Juan

The ideal time to visit San Juan, Siquijor Island, for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, which are perfect for enjoying the island's beaches and engaging in water activities like swimming and snorkeling. The weather is typically pleasant, with lower chances of rain disrupting your plans.

The peak tourist season often falls between December and February, coinciding with the Christmas holidays and cooler weather in other parts of the country. During this period, expect higher hotel rates and more crowds. For a balance of good weather and fewer people, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November, March, or April. These times still offer excellent conditions for exploring the island.

The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher possibility of rainfall and occasional typhoons. While Siquijor is generally less affected by typhoons compared to other regions, heavy rains can still occur, potentially impacting outdoor activities and ferry schedules. However, visiting during the wet season can offer lower prices and a more tranquil experience if you don't mind the occasional shower.

Food and Dining Near San Juan — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in San Juan, Siquijor, you must indulge in local Filipino cuisine, with a special focus on fresh seafood. Grilled fish, often caught daily by local fishermen, is a staple and can be found in many small eateries and restaurants. Look for dishes like *sinugba* (grilled) or *kinilaw* (Filipino ceviche), prepared with local spices and vinegar for a tangy, refreshing taste.

take advantage of this on trying *La Paz Batchoy*, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular across the Philippines. Its rich broth, tender pork, and savory toppings make it a comforting meal, especially on a cooler evening. Many local carinderias in San Juan will offer their own versions of this classic dish.

Another must-try is *Sutukil*, a cooking method popular in the Visayas region, which stands for Sugba (grill), Tuwa (stew), and Kilaw (ceviche). Many restaurants offer this where you can choose your fresh seafood and have it prepared in these three distinct styles, allowing you to sample a variety of flavors and textures in one meal.

For a sweet treat, seek out local delicacies like *budbud* (sticky rice rolls) or fresh tropical fruits such as mangoes and coconuts. These simple yet delicious offerings are readily available and provide a taste of authentic island life. Exploring the local food scene is an integral part of the travel experience in San Juan.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for San Juan

Siquijor is known for its rich folklore and traditional healing practices, though modern life has integrated well with these customs. Locals are generally friendly and respectful; a simple "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Dress modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas.

For safety, Siquijor is considered one of the safer islands in the Philippines. However, it's always wise to take standard precautions: be aware of your surroundings, secure your valuables, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. If you need assistance, local police can be reached at emergency numbers, which are usually available at your accommodation or can be found online.

When it comes to essential apps for your trip, consider downloading offline map applications like Google Maps or Maps.me, as internet connectivity can sometimes be spotty outside of main towns. A reliable translation app can be helpful if you encounter locals who speak less English. For managing your bookings and travel plans, the Traveloka app is indispensable for booking hotels, flights, and attractions.

Royal Cliff resorts is unhealthy place to stay. Electric fan not adequate for ventilation to sleep at night. cockroaches and ants were all over the bedroom area. I informed and showed to resort staff the roaches and ants. I sent 2 emails to Hotel.com and the Royal Cliff Resort management but both emails were ignored and unanswered to this date. I fully paid for 7 days week my stay and used 1 night only. Because my wife is suffering sore throat, start coughing and potentially lead to bronchitis/pneumonia we have to discontinue and cut short our stay using only 1 night out of 7 days.

Royal Cliff's strengths are the amazing views from its clifftop location. This is a very quiet small resort attractively located amid gardens and trees. The cottages are widely set apart. There are many quiet places to read or sunbathe. The staff are very friendly and the restaurant food is delicious and has a home cooked appeal. Please do not expect luxury, no hot water in showers, no air conditioning, no bedside light, no pool- but the cottage was cool without AC and we didn't need hot water. The beach was not sandy. Looking past these drawbacks Royal Cliff is a charming resort and was good value for money.

This hotel is a mosquito infested nightmare. Not only did we get covered with bites, we got very little sleep but it gets worse. My friend Dave started feeling weak and running a fever. So he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. They treated him for two days giving him medicine to control he fever. So we left the cliff House and booked a hotel in Dumaguete that was clean and well maintained but Dave’s fever came back so we took him to another larger private hospital in Dumaguete where they quickly determined that he had contracted dengue fever from he mosquito bites. So our entire vacation was ruined. We spent most of it in hospitals and we are out another $29000 which we paid for hospital bills and blood transfusions.

This is a nice quiet hotel with fairly large rooms. The hotel is located right on the water which is beautiful. The best thing about the hotel is the staff, all the girls are so so friendly and genuinely interested in your time on the island. The bed linen was a bit marked and needs replacing and the room maybe needed a bit of a spring clean in places, but all minor things really so for the price this place is good and we would return!

Sehr nettes Personal.
