Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers planning a trip to the stunning Boracay Island, getting there from major hubs like Manila, Cebu, or Davao is a well-trodden path, primarily involving air travel followed by a short sea voyage. From Manila, you have two main airport options: Caticlan Airport (MPH) and Kalibo International Airport (KLO). Flights to Caticlan are more convenient as it's the closest airport to the jetty port, with a travel time of about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate these routes, with fares typically ranging from approximately PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on booking time and season. Kalibo is further away, requiring a 1.5 to 2-hour bus or van ride to reach the Caticlan Jetty Port, but flights here can sometimes be cheaper, with fares similar to Caticlan. Booking your book flight tickets well in advance is highly recommended to secure better prices.

From Cebu, flights to Caticlan or Kalibo are also readily available, with similar travel times and fare ranges as from Manila. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines are the primary carriers. For travelers coming from Davao, you'll likely need to connect through Manila or Cebu, as direct flights to Caticlan or Kalibo are less common. The journey from these southern cities will therefore be longer, involving at least one layover.

Once you land at either Caticlan or Kalibo, the subsequent steps are the same: a short transfer to the Caticlan Jetty Port, followed by a boat ride to Boracay Island's Cagban Port.

Beyond air travel, land and sea options exist but are significantly more time-consuming. For instance, from Manila, one could take a bus to Caticlan, a journey that spans approximately 10-12 hours and costs around PHP 1,000-1,500. This is a more budget-friendly option for those not pressed for time. Similarly, from other parts of Luzon, buses are available. However, for most travelers, especially those coming from Visayas or Mindanao, flying is the most practical and time-efficient method to reach Boracay Island.

Upon arrival at Cagban Port in Boracay, you will take a tricycle or e-trike to your accommodation, such as Royal Park Resort Boracay.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

Boracay Island experiences two primary seasons: the dry season (Amihan) and the wet season (Habagat). The dry season typically runs from November to May, characterized by calmer seas, less rainfall, and gentle northeasterly winds. This period is considered the peak tourist season, with December to February being the coolest months. During these months, the weather is consistently sunny, making it ideal for beach activities, swimming, and water sports.

The island is at its most picturesque, with clear blue skies and calm waters.

The wet season, from June to October, is influenced by the Habagat winds, which bring stronger winds from the southwest and more frequent rainfall. While this period can see occasional typhoons, it doesn't mean constant rain. There are often sunny spells interspersed with showers. The advantage of visiting during the wet season is fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, offering a more relaxed atmosphere. However, sea conditions can be rougher, which might affect some water activities.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the shoulder months of November and May are often recommended.

For most Filipino travelers seeking a fitting choice for Boracay experience of sun, sand, and sea, the dry season from November to May is the preferred time to visit. This period offers the most reliable weather for enjoying the island's famous beaches and numerous water activities. While it is the peak season, meaning more visitors and potentially higher prices, the conditions are generally optimal.

If you prefer a quieter visit and don't mind the possibility of occasional rain, the shoulder months or the early part of the wet season can still offer a wonderful Boracay escape.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When visiting Boracay Island, Filipino travelers have the delightful opportunity to savor local flavors alongside international cuisine. A must-try is the fresh seafood, abundant in this coastal region. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid, often marinated in simple yet flavorful sauces, are staples. Look for restaurants that display their catch of the day; this ensures freshness and allows you to choose your preferred seafood.

Many eateries along White Beach offer these, often with a side of garlic rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce, calamansi, and chili.

Another local delicacy that resonates with Filipino palates is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is "cooked" in vinegar, often with ginger, onions, chili, and sometimes coconut milk for a creamy twist. It’s a refreshing appetizer, perfect for the tropical climate. You can find excellent Kinilaw in many local eateries and even some higher-end restaurants, each with their own subtle variations.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an iconic Filipino dessert that is especially popular in warm climates like Boracay. This shaved ice concoction is layered with sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, ube halaya, and topped with ice cream. It’s a delightful mix of textures and flavors, offering a cool respite from the heat. Many stalls and restaurants serve Halo-Halo, and trying different versions to find your favorite is part of the fun.

Don't leave Boracay without trying La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo, which is popular across the Visayas region. This rich broth, filled with pork, shrimp, and various toppings, is a comforting and flavorful meal. While not exclusively a Boracay dish, its availability in the region means you can enjoy this satisfying soup. Look for local carinderias or Filipino restaurants that offer authentic regional dishes.

Finally, for a quick and satisfying snack or meal, try some fresh fruit shakes. Boracay offers an abundance of tropical fruits like mango, banana, pineapple, and watermelon, blended into refreshing shakes. They are widely available from numerous stalls along the beach and are an affordable and delicious way to stay hydrated and energized while exploring the island.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

Boracay Island, while a popular tourist destination, retains a strong sense of local culture, particularly among the Ati community and the long-time residents. Respect for local customs is appreciated. When visiting religious sites like Iglesia Ni Cristo - Lokal ng Boracay, dress modestly. It's also customary to be polite and greet locals you encounter. While the island is generally welcoming, always be mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like D'Mall or Station 2.

Safety is paramount for any traveler. Boracay is considered a safe destination, but petty theft can occur, so keep your valuables secure. Avoid displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry. When swimming, be aware of the currents and heed any posted warnings. For emergencies, the local police can be reached at [Insert local emergency number if available, otherwise state general emergency services]. It's also wise to have the contact details of your accommodation, Royal Park Resort Boracay, readily accessible.

For a smoother travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for finding your way around the island, even offline if you download the map beforehand. Ride-hailing apps are not prevalent on Boracay itself, as tricycles are the primary mode of transport, but having a general map app is still beneficial. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used.

If you plan on booking activities or tours on the go, the Traveloka app is indispensable for finding and booking attractions and accommodations.

It's also advisable to have a currency converter app handy, especially if you're dealing with different currencies or want to quickly calculate prices. While many establishments accept credit cards, having some Philippine Pesos in cash is essential for smaller vendors, tricycle fares, and local markets. Familiarizing yourself with basic Filipino phrases can also enhance your interactions with locals and show respect for their culture.

The place is so cozy and relaxing. Easy access to the beach and to a lot of place to eat. Also for water sports. So happy that we choose this place for my birthday. Also, the staff are accommodating and friendly. We will definitely go back to this hotel pnce we get to see boracay again can't wait. We just sad that we booked other hotel ahead of time for the remainder of our stay. But next time we will just choose royal park hotel. The food is amazing also 10/10!

We have a very pleasant stay in this hotel. Food for breakfast was presented in buffet style. All foods taste delicious. My senior parents enjoy the large room with 2 queen beds ( Family room). All Staff and even the manager (Ms. Irish) were friendly and very accommodating. I will surely recommend Royal Park Hotel - Boracay to my family, relatives and friends!
