Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, the quickest and most convenient way to reach Cebu City from Manila is by air. Several local airlines, including Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia, operate frequent flights between Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but you can typically expect prices to range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip if booked strategically. It's always a good idea to book flight tickets in advance, especially during holidays and peak seasons, to get the best deals.

If you prefer a more scenic and potentially budget-friendly journey, traveling by sea is an option from Manila. Major shipping lines like 2GO Travel offer ferry services to Cebu City. This is a much longer trip, usually taking around 22 to 36 hours, depending on the vessel and route. While it’s not the fastest method, it can be an adventure in itself, offering a different perspective of the Philippine archipelago.

The cost for a ferry ticket can range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 or more, depending on the class of accommodation you choose.

From other major cities like Cagayan de Oro or Davao in Mindanao, flying is also the most practical option, with numerous daily flights to Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Alternatively, for those coming from closer Visayan cities like Iloilo or Bacolod, ferry services are also readily available and offer a cost-effective way to reach Cebu. For travelers coming from Luzon cities other than Manila, direct flights to Cebu are also becoming more common, or they can connect through Manila.

Regardless of your origin, planning your travel to Cebu City is made easier with the wide array of transport options available.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City experiences a tropical climate, which means it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking pleasant weather is during the dry season, which typically runs from December to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for exploring the city's attractions, visiting nearby islands, and enjoying outdoor activities.

The cooler months within this period, from December to February, offer slightly more comfortable temperatures, though it remains tropical.

The period from June to November generally constitutes the wet season, characterized by higher humidity and a greater chance of rainfall, often in the form of short, intense downpours. While this might deter some from outdoor pursuits, it's also the time when you might find fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for flights and accommodation.

For travelers who don't mind occasional rain and are looking for a more relaxed pace, the wet season can still be a rewarding time to visit. It's also worth noting that major festivals, like the Sinulog Festival in January, draw huge crowds and can significantly impact accommodation availability and prices, so planning well in advance is essential if you wish to experience these events.

For a balanced experience, aiming for the shoulder months, such as late November or early December, or late May, can offer a good compromise. You might still encounter some rain, but the crowds are generally smaller than during the peak dry season, and the weather is often still quite agreeable for sightseeing. Ultimately, Cebu City is a year-round destination, and the "best" time to visit truly depends on your personal preferences regarding weather, crowd levels, and budget.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu City is a culinary powerhouse in the Philippines, renowned for its distinct flavors and dishes that are a source of immense local pride. When you visit, you absolutely must try Cebu's version of Lechon. Unlike other regions, Cebuano Lechon is often described as being exceptionally flavorful and succulent, with a crispy skin that is a result of being stuffed with a generous mix of herbs and spices like garlic, onion, and lemongrass.

You can find excellent Lechon at various establishments, from famous dedicated restaurants to local eateries, and it's a dish that truly embodies the celebratory spirit of Filipino cuisine.

Another Cebuano specialty that deserves your attention is Kinilaw. This is the Filipino take on ceviche, where fresh raw fish is "cooked" in vinegar, typically coconut vinegar, along with ginger, onions, chili peppers, and sometimes calamansi. The result is a refreshing and tangy dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate. Cebuano Kinilaw often features local seafood like tanigue (Spanish mackerel) or tuna, and its preparation can vary slightly from place to place, offering a delightful exploration of local tastes.

Look for it in seafood restaurants or even as a starter in more upscale dining venues.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Rosquillos are a must-try. These are traditional Cebuano cookies, known for their delicate, slightly sweet, and crunchy texture. They are often shaped like a flower and are a popular pasalubong (souvenir gift). While you can find them in many local bakeries and souvenir shops, trying them fresh from a local bakery offers a delightful experience. They are perfect with a cup of coffee or as a light snack.

Don't leave Cebu without trying Chorizo de Cebu. These small, flavorful pork sausages are seasoned with annatto, giving them a distinctive reddish hue and a slightly sweet, garlicky taste. They are often pan-fried or grilled until slightly crispy and are a popular breakfast item or appetizer. Many local markets and restaurants serve them, and they are also readily available for purchase to take home as a delicious reminder of your culinary journey in Cebu.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is a rich blend of indigenous traditions, Spanish colonial influences, and modern adaptations. The people are known for their hospitality and strong sense of community. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. While English is widely spoken and understood, learning a few basic Cebuano phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) can be appreciated.

Respect for elders and religious customs is important; when visiting churches or religious sites, dress modestly. The Sinulog Festival, held every third Sunday of January, is the city's most significant cultural event, a grand celebration honoring the Santo Niño, characterized by vibrant street parades and dancing.

Cebu City is generally a safe place for travelers, but like any urban center, it's wise to exercise caution. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets and public transport terminals, to avoid petty theft. It's advisable to keep valuables secure and out of sight. When taking taxis, ensure the meter is used or agree on a fare beforehand. For transportation, ride-sharing apps are also a reliable option.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. For specific local police assistance, it's good to have the numbers of local police stations handy, which can often be found online or through your hotel.

To enhance your travel experience in Cebu City, several apps can be very useful. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are essential for convenient and relatively safe transportation around the city. For navigation, Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around and estimating travel times. If you're looking for dining recommendations or reviews, apps like Zomato or TripAdvisor can be helpful, though many local eateries might not be listed.

For communication, ensure you have a reliable local SIM card or an international roaming plan, and apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used for staying in touch.

It was a decent stay overall, but there were several issues. I requested a twin room in the booking notes because I might have a friend staying with me, but when I arrived they still gave me a single-bed room. There were no toiletries in the room either, so I had to ask for them, and they only gave me one small soap and one shampoo with conditioner even though I was staying for two nights. The lobby had a strange smell, and the air-conditioning in my room wasn’t working. I asked to be moved the next day and that was when they finally gave me the twin room. The area outside the hotel can feel a bit sketchy at night, although it is conveniently close to the city center.

We originally booked this hotel for 7 days but unfortunately could not stay more than one night. The first room we were given had visible mold, so we asked to change. The second room was not much better — it smelled musty, the air conditioner was very noisy, the shower head was broken, and the bed had stains. The internet kept cutting off, and the TV did not have Netflix or YouTube. On the positive side, the staff were friendly, but not enough to make up for the poor condition of the rooms and lack of proper customer service. Overall, the cleanliness and maintenance were very disappointing. We ended up checking out after just one night, even though we had already paid for a full week. A very sad and frustrating experience.

The room was in terrible condition—dirty, the safe didn't work, and the cardholder was broken. There was barely any lighting, and the only tiny window faced a wall, making it feel like a basement room. There was no fridge, no water pressure in the sink, and to make matters worse, the room was infested with ants and some cockroaches.

We didn't finished or use our remaining 1 night in this hotel. Rooms is dirty, toilet was clogged takes half day to fixed when we follow-up, toilet mirror was detached, bad smell from drainage was strong, they use soiled dirty white Towels, pillows are smell bad, linens had so much stained and inks, they used old torn linens for extra bed. No available cleaning person to call on. Over-all experience was terrible. We didnt finished our stay and move to other hotel. Notified the staff and manager about this. Tried to contact expedia to cancel on our second day but attended our message at help center. They should refund what i paid for this garbage hotel.
