Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila, the most efficient way to reach Cebu City is by air. Numerous daily flights operate between Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer competitive fares, especially when booked in advance. You can typically find round-trip tickets ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000, depending on the season and booking time. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. To secure the best prices, it's recommended to book flight tickets well ahead of your travel dates.

If you prefer land and sea travel, you can take a bus from Metro Manila to a ferry terminal, then board a passenger ship bound for Cebu. This journey is significantly longer, often taking 20 to 36 hours, and involves multiple legs. Major shipping lines like 2GO Travel offer routes. While more time-consuming, this option can be more economical for those carrying a lot of luggage or seeking a more scenic, albeit lengthy, travel experience. Fares can vary widely but expect to spend around PHP 2,000 to PHP 4,000 for a one-way trip.

Traveling from other major Philippine cities like Davao or Cagayan de Oro also primarily involves air travel to Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Direct flights are available, making Cebu City easily accessible from various parts of Mindanao. For those coming from nearby Visayan islands, ferry services are a common and affordable mode of transport, connecting cities like Bohol, Iloilo, and Bacolod to Cebu City's port.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The dry season, typically from December to May, is considered the most favorable time for visiting. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, perfect for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and nearby islands. The peak tourist season falls within this period, especially around Christmas, New Year, and the Sinulog Festival in January.

The wet season runs from June to November, characterized by higher humidity and a greater chance of rain, including occasional typhoons. While you might encounter some downpours, these are often short-lived, and you can still enjoy your trip by planning indoor activities or visiting during breaks in the rain. Traveling during the shoulder months of the wet season, like June or November, can offer a good balance of decent weather and fewer crowds.

For Filipino travelers looking to experience the famous Sinulog Festival, a grand celebration honoring the Santo Niño, plan your visit for the third Sunday of January. This is a period of intense festivity, with street parades, religious processions, and cultural performances. Be aware that accommodation prices surge during this time, and booking well in advance is essential. For a more relaxed and budget-friendly trip, consider visiting during the off-peak months of the dry season, like February or March, after the Sinulog rush.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu is a culinary destination, and Filipino travelers will find a delightful array of flavors to savor. A must-try is the Cebu Lechon, often hailed as the best in the Philippines. Unlike other versions, Cebu's lechon is typically roasted without stuffing, relying on aromatics like garlic, onions, and lemongrass stuffed inside the cavity, resulting in incredibly tender meat and crispy skin. Look for popular spots like CNT Lechon or Rico's Lechon.

Another local specialty is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is "cooked" in vinegar, often with ginger, onions, chili, and calamansi. It's a refreshing appetizer that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent kinilaw in many seafood restaurants and local eateries across Cebu.

For those with a sweet tooth, try the Rosquillos, a type of hard biscuit originating from Liloan, Cebu. These ring-shaped cookies have a slightly sweet and buttery flavor, perfect for dipping in coffee or milk. They are widely available in pasalubong centers and supermarkets, making them an easy souvenir to bring home.

Don't leave Cebu without trying Puto Maya and Sikwate. Puto Maya is a steamed rice cake, often served with a rich, thick hot chocolate known as Sikwate, made from pure cacao. This traditional breakfast or merienda combination is a comforting and authentic Cebuano experience, best enjoyed at local markets or traditional eateries.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is warm and hospitable, with a strong sense of community. Filipinos are generally friendly and approachable, but it's always good practice to be polite and respectful. When visiting churches or religious sites, dress modestly. Learning a few basic Cebuano phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) can go a long way in fostering positive interactions.

When it comes to safety, Cebu City is generally safe for tourists, but like any urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid displaying expensive items openly, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of petty theft. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also helpful to have the contact numbers of your hotel and local police precinct readily available.

For seamless navigation and communication, several apps are essential for Filipino travelers. Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city, showing routes for public transport like jeepneys and buses, as well as walking directions. Grab is the go-to app for ride-hailing services, offering a convenient and relatively safe way to book taxis and private cars.

Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may not speak Tagalog or English fluently. Weather apps are also useful for keeping track of the forecast, especially during the rainy season. Having these tools on your smartphone will significantly enhance your travel experience in Cebu City, ensuring you can navigate, communicate, and stay informed with ease.

This hotel has a good location. The staff were accommodating especially this one specific guard on post, I forgot his name, but, I really appreciate his action of making me feel at home with their hotel. Areas I'd like them to improve are their room illumination and policy on no shouting along the hallway and corridors especially near guest rooms. In addition, during check out, they need to anticipate that we will ask for official receipt, thus, they need to prepare it upon checking it out. I hope they could improve the next time around.

I called 3 days before my trip to ask if there's anyway I can check in early because I'm arriving at midnight. The one I talked to, Me-anne or someone, told me that I can just pay for the entire day instead (the whole day of Thursday) so that I can check in early. I confirmed again and again while I was talking to her and she said she would reserve the room. Upon my arrival, the one on duty checked and told me that there's no record of that conversation or my reservation and that there's no room available anymore. They didn't even bother to call the girl I talked to confirm - they're making it look like I was lying about talking and reserving the room on that day! Very unprofessional staff! They didn't even bother to help and refer other hotels that I can stay in because it's 2 in the morning already! Unprofessional, not at all accommodating! Plus I requested for a room with a large bed, not two single ones! But again, they said they do not have any room available with my request. This is why I booked earlier on, so that they will be prepared. The shower is not properly working as well. Not going to stay again in this place. Tip to other travelers: there's a lot more places near the circle that's highly recommended.

Stayed here last May 5, 2018 for 1 night. Service was good but there was a water interruption on that evening around 10pm till 4am I think. The room was clean but it needs to be renovated and the bedding should be replaced as well. The location is accessible to shopping malls and some tourist destination.

The staff who escorted me to my room was very fast and he did not help bring my backpack, towels + soap only given 1. not get mineral water. Thin blanket. AC sound very loud, very disturbing. The bedroom and bathroom are cramped. In the bathroom there is no clothes hanger. TV only has 1 local channel, no cable TV channels. Old hotel. Can not brush teeth + toothpaste + shampoo. thin and short towels. Requested php deposit 500 locations close to famous locations, walking distance to Sky Experience Adventure, Mango Square, Robinson Place Cebu, Fuente Osmena Circle. Fast wifi.

Location wise, perfect! The only off for this place is their shower. Hopefully they can have an upgrade soon☺️✌🏻

Not a bad place. Stayed many times. But charging for hot water. Lol. With so many options of hotels in the area you really want to loose a customer to make 5 peso on something that is offered free everywhere else. Stupidity
