Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipinos traveling from Manila to Cebu City, flying is the most practical and time-efficient option. Numerous airlines operate daily flights between Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for as low as PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 for a one-way ticket if booked early.

Traveling by bus and ferry is a more economical but significantly longer alternative. From Manila, you can take a bus to a ferry terminal and then board a vessel bound for Cebu. This journey can take anywhere from 20 to 36 hours, depending on the route and ferry schedule.

While it offers a chance to see more of the country, it requires a considerable amount of time and is best suited for those who are not in a hurry and are looking to minimize travel costs. Bus fares to ferry terminals vary, and ferry tickets can range from PHP 1,000 to PHP 3,000 or more for different classes.

Driving to Cebu from Luzon is also possible, involving a series of bus rides and ferry crossings. This is a journey for the adventurous and requires careful planning. You would typically drive south to a ferry port in Luzon, take a ferry to Visayas, and then drive across the islands to reach Cebu. Toll fees and ferry charges for vehicles will add to the overall cost. For most travelers, especially those coming from distant cities, it's more convenient to book flight tickets and then arrange local transportation upon arrival in Cebu City.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The dry season, typically from December to May, is considered the most favorable time to visit. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring historical sites, and enjoying the beaches if you venture outside the city. The period between December and February is particularly pleasant, with slightly cooler temperatures.

The wet season runs from June to November, characterized by higher humidity and more frequent rain showers. While rain can occur, it's often in the form of short, intense downpours, and the rest of the day can still be sunny. Traveling during the wet season can sometimes mean lower accommodation prices and fewer crowds, offering a different kind of appeal for budget-conscious travelers. It’s always wise to pack an umbrella and be prepared for occasional rain regardless of the season.

For those interested in cultural events, the Sinulog Festival, held every third Sunday of January, is a major highlight. This religious and cultural festival draws massive crowds to Cebu City for its vibrant parades and street dancing. If you plan to visit during this time, be sure to book your accommodation and flights well in advance, as demand surges significantly. Outside of the festival, visiting during the shoulder months of the dry season, like late November or early March, can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu is a culinary destination, and Filipino travelers will find a plethora of delicious dishes to savor. A must-try is the famous Cebu Lechon, often hailed as the best in the Philippines. Unlike other versions, Cebu Lechon is typically roasted with a simpler spice rub, allowing the natural flavor of the pork to shine through. Look for restaurants that specialize in Lechon, where you can enjoy it with its crispy skin and succulent meat, often served with a side of rice and a dipping sauce.

Another local delicacy is Kinilaw, Cebu's version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, chili peppers, and other local spices. The acidity of the vinegar "cooks" the fish, resulting in a tangy and refreshing appetizer. It’s a perfect dish to enjoy on a warm day, offering a burst of fresh flavors that are distinctly Filipino. Many local eateries and even higher-end restaurants offer their own take on this classic dish.

For seafood lovers, the fresh catch available in Cebu is exceptional. You can find numerous seafood markets and restaurants where you can choose your own fish, prawns, or shellfish and have them cooked to your preference – grilled, steamed, or fried. This experience allows you to enjoy the freshest ingredients prepared just the way you like them. take advantage of this on trying grilled squid or prawns, often seasoned simply with salt and pepper.

Finally, no culinary exploration of Cebu would be complete without trying some of its popular snacks and desserts. Dried mangoes are a famous export, and you can find them in various forms, from soft and chewy to crispy. Halo-halo, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, and topped with leche flan and ice cream, is also a refreshing treat. Exploring the local markets and carinderias will reveal many more hidden culinary gems.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. Filipinos are generally friendly and respectful, and it's appreciated when visitors show the same courtesy. When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dress modestly. Learning a few basic Cebuano phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can go a long way in fostering positive interactions with locals. Always be mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, to prevent petty theft.

For safety, it's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. Stick to well-lit and populated areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. In case of emergencies, know the local emergency numbers. Having a reliable way to communicate is essential, so consider getting a local SIM card or ensuring your roaming services are active. It's also wise to have the contact details of your accommodation readily available.

To enhance your travel experience in Cebu City, several apps can be very useful. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are indispensable for convenient and relatively affordable transportation around the city. Navigation apps such as Google Maps are crucial for finding your way around, especially if you plan to explore independently. For communication, apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by locals. Consider downloading offline maps if you anticipate areas with spotty internet connectivity.

When it comes to payments, while cash is still widely used, many establishments in Cebu City now accept credit cards and mobile payment options. It’s always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller vendors or jeepney rides. Familiarizing yourself with the local currency, the Philippine Peso (PHP), and having a mix of payment methods will ensure you are prepared for various situations during your stay.

This was my 2nd time staying in the San Remo Residence and we always have an amazing few days. The place is cleaned and well equipped especially for us that we like to cook and eat in the condo to save. The guards are very friendly and the management are very accommodating. We'll definitely come back.

We arrived at the property at 2:30pm, but we're unable to check in because we were not given check-in information required by guard house. Finally after 11pm, we did receive the email with that information, but far too late as we had already checked into another hotel and we're sleeping! The property should be more forthcoming about the difficulty in getting taxi service there as well!

The ambience is nice. We feel at home. However, we experienced slow flow of water to the point that we were not able to take a bath because our car service was set at 7:30am and it was only then the water flow became normal hence we don't have anymore time coz the car service was already waiting for us. No Globe signal inside the room- you have to go outside to send your message or call.

"Brand new" apartment complex, located pretty close to SM Seaside. So new complex, that they still are constructing new buildings. Nice security and guarded entrance and inside the different blocks. Makes you feel safe and secure. When we stayed here, out of season, not so many visitors made it quietly and comfortable. Our appartment allreay got some damages and remarks, telling that previous visitors dont act like visitors, show no respect to others property. From previous experiences I always take pictures upon arrival, together with the one opening the apartment, to document what's allready damaged before us, so we dont get in any trouble upon checking out. The appartment was spacious, and was a great and affordable for our family of 5. Full kitchen accessories for making our own food. New and nice wasingmashine also available. Great swimmingpool with a separated one for the smallest kids. The biggest issue with the stay was the outside road, going from the main highway to the entrance gate. That road was the worlds biggest and widest goat path. Hardly suitable for other than carabous and goats! Probably destroid by all the constroction trucks in the area. But really? Obviously those who constructed this road underestimated and underdimensioned the heavy load and the heavy use for the road and it ended up like a total disaster. Hopefully the will repair it when all is finished, and hopfully guests will not be scared off by this terrible horrible acsess road.

I was very disappointed. Wifi did not work, bathroom smelled horrible, no trash can, no toilet tissue and the pool was extremely noisy due to onsite construction of another apartment building beside the pool. No taxis available nearby. Their information on hotels.com listed the wrong telephone number so checking in was a hassle too. It is not close to anything. Maybe 2 km from SM Seaside. I had a reservation for three nights but left after the first night. The owner would not refund me even for one of the three nights.

This was my 2nd time staying in the San Remo Residence and we always have an amazing few days. The place is cleaned and well equipped especially for us that we like to cook and eat in the condo to save. The guards are very friendly and the management are very accommodating. We'll definitely come back.

The two things that need improvement is the bedding bed was comfortable but proper blankets needed and in the bathroom a wall tile missing just those two things great price very convenient and nice pool. Although i was given a a code to use the pool i was npt asked for it almost the whole stay then after i deleted it i was asked for it had to look through all my deleted emails to find it. Swam every day there out of six asked for it on my last day.
