Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Numerous airlines operate daily flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes, with fares varying based on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. Expect prices to range from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip.

For budget-conscious travelers, bus travel is an option, though significantly longer. From Manila, you can take a bus to El Nido or Coron, which pass through Puerto Princesa, or take a direct bus to Puerto Princesa if available. This journey can take upwards of 24 hours and typically costs between PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500 one way. This option is best for those who enjoy long road trips and want to see more of the country.

Driving to Puerto Princesa is a considerable undertaking, usually involving ferry travel for vehicles if coming from Luzon. The Pan-Philippine Highway connects major islands, but the Palawan leg requires sea transport. This route is for the most adventurous travelers and can take several days, involving significant planning for ferry schedules and road conditions.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

The ideal time to visit Puerto Princesa is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, perfect for island hopping tours, visiting Honda Bay, and exploring the Underground River. Temperatures are warm, averaging around 28-30°C, making outdoor activities very pleasant.

The wet season, from June to October, brings occasional rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy. However, this period also sees fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, making it attractive for wallet-conscious travelers. While rain can disrupt some outdoor activities, many tours continue to operate, and the lush scenery is particularly beautiful during this time.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or May. These periods often offer a good compromise, with pleasant weather conditions and fewer tourists compared to the peak holiday seasons of December and January.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Puerto Princesa is complete without savoring its local culinary delights. A must-try is the fresh seafood, abundant in Palawan. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are staples, often seasoned simply to highlight their natural flavors. Look for local eateries or restaurants along the baywalk for an authentic taste.

Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, is another local specialty you should sample. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing appetizer. It’s a perfect dish to enjoy on a warm Palawan day, showcasing the island's fresh catch.

For a taste of something unique, try the Tamilok, a type of woodworm found in mangrove areas. It’s typically served fresh, marinated in vinegar, or lightly fried. While its appearance might be unusual, its briny, slightly sweet flavor is surprisingly appealing to adventurous eaters.

Don't forget to try the Lato, a type of seaweed that resembles tiny green grapes. It has a crisp texture and a refreshing, oceanic taste, often served with a simple vinaigrette or as a side dish to seafood. It’s a healthy and delicious way to experience Palawan's marine bounty.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipino travelers will find Puerto Princesa to be a welcoming city. Politeness and respect are highly valued; using "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or authority figures is a customary sign of respect. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, but it's always wise to take standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and secure your valuables. For emergencies, the local police hotline is 911. Adventist Hospital Palawan is a reliable medical facility should you need assistance.

For seamless travel, consider downloading these essential apps: Traveloka for booking accommodations and activities, Grab for ride-hailing (though tricycles are more common for short distances), and a reliable map application like Google Maps for navigation. Having these tools readily available will enhance your exploration of Puerto Princesa.

The water that comes out of the faucet and shower is dirty! Even the drinking water in the dispenser outside is dirty. Then there is no water in the morning and they had to bring us 2 pails of water just so we can take a bath. No toiletries provided, instead, used soap and shampoo was in the bathroom. Not gonna book ever again with this pension house. Just terrible.
